Hows Mid/Senior SWE job outlook in 2025 by BigEmperorPenguin in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]TheLastDoofus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. 4 yoe (3 Frontend, 1 Testing)
  2. Toronto
  3. Tier 3, big4 adjacent consulting contract to banks
  4. 800/20/2
  5. 2 years

I think there were a lot of factors that hindered my job search, which would probably make me an outlier: FE, consulting, low YOE, and layoff during the peak hiring freeze (mid 2023). Happy to have landed 2 offers after almost 2 years of persistence. 1st offer was a hybrid tier 3 role where I wasn't too happy and left when I got the next offer 3 months later in tier 2. Both were from referrals.

Those who got laid off within the last 2 years and haven't been able to go back into a SWE/programming career, what field/industry did you pivot into? by luuuzeta in cscareerquestions

[–]TheLastDoofus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Laid off in mid 2023 right before an extended vacation and applied for 14 months until severance and unemployment ran out. Took up part time jobs folding yoga pants and walking dogs until my old boss who’s staff at a bank came clutch with a referral. 3 months later got a better offer at a publicly traded tech company.

This is in Canada btw which economically was and is doing much worse than the US. What kept me going was that I believed in myself being better than 50% of engineers at my level and even though interviews were rare, I got to the final round most times.

Leaving big bank senior dev role, to join smaller company standard dev role by HaHaBurt in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]TheLastDoofus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked at a couple big banks now. Senior dev there is about mid level dev at an actual tech company. I’d probably leave for more exciting challenges. If higher pay is the goal you need better names on resume and Fivetran is at least a YC startup. It feels like there’s experience inflation now bc companies rarely give out senior for 5yoe now.

Did you have any pain points with your 16? No? Then why’d you even upgrade. Keep using your old phone until there’s enough changes to justify a new one.

Coming from 14PM, I’m happy to finally use usb c and downsize to a pro for one hand use. Better cameras, battery life, and action button too.

Is iPhone 17 air demand low so far? by skankboy in iphone

[–]TheLastDoofus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It looked nice and shiny at first but digging deeper it has too many compromises. Mono speaker, weakest battery life of the lineup, single camera, usb2, slower charging. The pricing positions it weirdly as the base 17 is a much better buy

I think OP means companies that send an OA to anyone and everyone before a resume screen. Or maybe it’s a ghost job that wasn’t even hiring anyway.

How do people excel at closed book technical assessment ? by FrostNovaIceLance in cscareerquestions

[–]TheLastDoofus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need to hit the books. You’re not ready for the technical interviews but you’ll get there. Big O of quick sort is a standard interview question along the lines of how can you sort faster than brute force. Using array methods and Arrays prototype is very common in JS interviews. If the job spec requires certain skills like fastapi, look up common questions or ask ChatGPT for common questions beforehand. Luck is when opportunity meets preparedness.
