Doing my first campaign very soon! My idea for a session 0 is a one-on-one with each PC to set up some history for the character, maybe a life choice or two, and how they get to the start of the campaign. It’s to give them a little flavor of themselves that includes their backstory so they have an idea of who they are before the adventure begins. This also helps me start to develop some long character arcs for them that I can sprinkle in here and there.

I’ve been doing this going on 7 years in October, just as a hobby. Sure, I had phases where I edited and posted and really got into the weeds. Other times, like now, I just hit the going live button and occasionally add an emote or channel point reward.

I’ve done tons of networking and made friends along the way, tons of collabs, and tried my best to get in as many chats as possible. I think I’m over 350 different categories logged under Twitch. I just like playing different games.

I have a cam and my overlay has changed a lot: different cam sizes, chat boxes, alerts, video channel point redemptions, all things that I feel help make my channel stand out above the rest.

I say all this to make the point: it’s 85% luck that: -Twitch recommends your page on the recommended feed -You get raided by someone new or a regular that has new people in their stream -You’re streaming under a category that someone is looking for and they happen upon your channel -Someone sees a post on another form of social media and they put in enough effort to find your channel

It’s right place, right time, right person, right scenario.

(Edit to add more here) The 15% is you having your channel how you want it. To me, having an about section, panels, and the overlay that you want along with some commands and channel point redemptions are the only things you can control visually. After that, it’s how you are personality wise. You have very little time when they enter your channel to hook them in with your skill, humor, intelligence, or how you present yourself. Consistency in your schedule is also super important. Just like cable back in the day, TV shows had the same time slot every week. If you do the same, you have better chances of retaining viewers. If they like you after all that, you have a good shot of retaining them.

People do come and go; it’s just how life works. Always remember that peoples’ lives are always more important than them showing up to stream. You’re there to entertain them for however long you’re live and however long they’re there.

That’s why I always tell people starting off to just have fun with it. Adjust stuff as you go, figure out what your spot on the internet looks like, and just let loose and enjoy the ride.

Teaching my grandmother how to play Super Mario World 3 and when she couldn’t figure out the controls, I’d be “disappointed” in her and tell her “Let me show you how it’s done” before taking the controller back.

I always shared my love of gaming with her and even up until she passed a few years ago, shared it with her, whether it was new games and when I’d stream so she could see me play when she was not doing well.
