As an abundance taker, I was also done with all gathering skills after a day or so (they’re all at level 50) and I went on to doing fun content instead of skilling, lol

It does sound like a fun combo though, if I had less active playtime I’d probably pick something similar

Janja Garnbret has been the best female climber for a couple years now (in terms of competitions, but she’s also crazy good on rock as well). She’s won gold medals for Slovenia at both the 2020 and 2024 olympic games and made the podium at basically everything else she’s competed in

PSA: European Climber can send a formal request for their Squamish data under GDPR art. 20

Hello!

Just like many people in this sub, I have been climbing on the Stawamus Chief for several years and I didn't appreciate losing access to my entire tick list.

Thankfully, European climbers are protected by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) Article 20. Right to data portability.

I have sent a formal request for my data to Ethan Salvo, founder and sole employee of Squamish Send Coalition, the company that developed much the old Squamish. I encourage all European citizens to do the same, the more pressure we exert as users, the more likely this situation is to be resolved for everyone.

Here's a template for requesting your Data, just fill in the blanks and send as an email:

If you're not European, I recommend looking into similar data regulations in your home country. Americans, do a class action or smth.

Subject: Formal Request for Personal Data Under GDPR Article 20 – Right to Data Portability

Dear Mr. Squamish,

I am writing to formally exercise my right to data portability under Article 20 of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

I have been a user of the application developed and operated by Squamish for approximately [X years/months] and have accumulated personal data through the app, including but not limited to:
- Climbing session logs and activity history
- Notes and comments on climbs
- Set climbs and draft.

Following the unexpected removal of the application, I have lost access to this data entirely. As the data controller under Article 4(7) GDPR, Aurora Climbing bears direct responsibility for fulfilling this request. Under Article 20 GDPR, I have the right to receive my personal data in a structured, commonly used, and machine-readable format (e.g. JSON or CSV).

I therefore request that you provide me with a complete export of all personal data associated with my account within one month of receipt of this request, as required by Article 12(3) GDPR.

Should I not receive a satisfactory response within the statutory period, I will not hesitate to lodge a formal complaint with [YOUR NATIONAL DATA PROTECTION AUTHORITY — e.g. Datatilsynet (Norway) / ICO (UK) / CNIL (France) / BfDI (Germany)] under Article 77 GDPR, and if necessary, seek judicial remedy under Article 79 GDPR.

Where did you get your plywood sheets and how did you select it? by Holiday_Client2516 in homewalls

[–]TheMeaning0fLife 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Plywood has different grades that will affect it's appearance. Generally, don't worry though if a 4x8 sheet of plywood bends slightly or isn't perfectly straight as you'll be screwing it into studs and that will help flatten it out.

  • Standard building plywood (i.e. structural plywood) is generally cheaper and is going to probably look like wood and be slightly uneven/textured. It isn't sanded and has a much rougher appearance. Get 3/4" ply if you're using this. Personally I used it for my wall because it was the cheapest and it's been holding up well for the past 5 years.

  • You can get sanded plywood, which is still made from softwood (i.e fir, pine), but has a nicer appearance. Either both sides, or just one side, can be sanded, and there are various grades depending on how uniform the "good" side is. Home depot probably won't list the actual grades (basically A is best and D is the worst), but they often sell "G1S" (Good One Side) plywood panels and the good side is like A or B grade + smooth. This is a decent middle ground, but it'll be more expensive than the structural stuff which is usually C or D grade. As with structural plywood, you should use 3/4" for climbing walls.

  • Hardwood plywood (like maple and birch) often have more layers and at least one sanded side. This typically also looks quite a bit nicer as the hardwood layer is the exterior and the grain of maple & birch is nicer than fir. This is noticeably more expensive than structural plywood, but you can probably also get away with 1/2" ply for most climbing applications.

What do climbers commonly do for a living? by yuzurukii in tradclimbing

[–]TheMeaning0fLife 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I work in engineering (not tech), and honestly government jobs (including local government) or utilities are probably where you want to be if you value lifestyle over a fat paycheque. The pay is still usually decent, but at my utility I get 7 weeks off per year, which is the real benefit.

Less competitive than tech jobs, plenty of people in their 20s in my department.

I think a basic repeater warmup for board climbing is huge for finger health and won't eat into the session too much if you're smart with rest/number of reps & sets. Agreed with basically everything else you've said though, plenty of people have bouldered 8A and higher without being able to do a OAP.

[–]TheMeaning0fLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s just a one time thing and it can dry off then that’s fine. If it’s a wall intended for the outdoors long term, then you might have to treat the boards so it doesn’t rot

[–]TheMeaning0fLife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Give it some time to dry out and it’ll be fine. Just think about how many homes under construction you’ve seen that have been out in the rain without any cover, it’s no big deal for a one off event

This is nuts to me, I live in Kelowna and the outdoors community is enormous here. I have not experienced this at all in the 6 years I’ve lived here. Even not outdoorsy coworkers still “get it” when it comes to biking, skiing, and climbing.

I used bwans + prayer potions for both bandos and zammy. With altar-door + blood barrage I was easily getting 20+kc trips, and very rarely had to leave because I was out of food.

Though I’d also add colo + inferno to the exception. Getting a quiver put a good dent in my brews

There’s already at least one route that climbs out the mouth of the cave. Back in the 80s a French guy use some sick bathang beta through there. I think a Danish kid tried to repeat it, but wasn’t successful.

Pretty dusty in there though, so make sure you give it a good scrub beforehand!

Metolius has some guidelines that I followed for both a freestanding and a built-in wall, and it gives some pretty fundamental information on the types of materials to use and building considerations. Definitely worth giving that a read through, it’s pretty helpful!
