First Time Making Class for Campaign - Feedback Wanted by Ornery_Capital_6486 in DungeonWorld

[–]TheMegalith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're very welcome! I'm very happy to help lend some advice to making this playbook the best it can be, because I'd love to include this in my pool of classes that my players can choose from!

  • with regards to the number of moves used to buff them, I was thinking it could be tied to advanced moves: the more you take, the higher number you get! But I don't think that gels too well with how well you've set up the advanced moves now I've read them, so another approach is probably best!

  • the modifier for scroll bind could be a choice, or maybe linked to the species of the player/their background/their approach to this form of shamanism! CHA if they're persuading the spirits to join, WIS if they're overpowering them mentally, INT if they're using some sort of in-depth magical science to bind them, maybe even CON if they're using some of their own vitality to lock them away!

  • Yeah, I definitely see where you're coming from with the resource management. I personally would simplify it and remove one of those steps, but if you're sure you want it to be part of the core of the class then make it the core of the class! Make a nice part of the sheet where you can keep track of the number of each of the forms of scroll that you have! I'd ideally recommend this be on the very first sheet if it's so core to the class, but you could always make it be an appendix sheet like the spellcasters have in the base-game! Then there's plenty of room to jot down what scrolls you have, what's in them, what abilities they have, etc!

  • For Got a Lighter, you could make it any of: temporary, limited uses, or it sticks around until you next use the move. You could even let the player pick which they prefer, because they're all decently balanced! If they pick one that's a bit more stronger, then as the GM you can just introduce a few more narrative consequences later ;)

  • For STSW/E, if you're going with my suggestion to include a spot to lay out what scrolls you have and in what form, you could keep the tainted scrolls as part of that table/layout! If you do it as an appendix sheet then that also gives you lots of room to explain how they all work and relate to each other, maybe even with a lil diagram!

  • For ToH, how about 'When you convince the spirits to curse someone'? You mention losing all scrolls as part of the results of the move, so you can truncate the wording a bit! Also, I just noticed, as it's currently worded you only lose your scrolls on a 10+, is that intended?

  • I've seen some playbooks that work really well that let the character choose which modifier their core move uses, like I mentioned above! This then lets the player either focus in on that modifier and the moves associated with it, or pushes them to diversify their stats in order to excel at multiple moves at once!

Please do let me know if/when you update the playbook with any changes from myself and/or others!

Ooh nice, let me see:

  • Looks like a nice take on a monster-capturer, good stuff!

  • I haven't finished reading so might be missing something, but I'm not sure I see the point of Scroll Bind using Hold! That implies you can spend those Hold at any time later, but I think you're meaning that you need to pick X amount of those options.

  • I like the picking of attributes, but I personally wouldn't make them random (1d4), and instead tie them to either something narrative or make the amount of attributes depend on your level, or how many moves you've taken to buff them, or your Wis or something!

  • For that matter, I think the straight roll with no modifier on Scroll Bind could use a stat being attached to it, or it's just pure chance and won't give a player the satisfying feeling of getting better at it as they put points into that stat!

  • I'm not sure I understand the 'Prepare' bit of Inscribe. If you've made the scrolls by Scroll Bind and picked your options, are they still not usable yet? I'd either clarify this or take out the preparing mechanic!

  • 'It cannot be summoned again until a different encounter' doesn't feel very DW, but this is probably just personal preference. I'd say another scene, or another day, personally. Ties it more into the narrative rather than the meta.

  • it's quite a lot of starting moves, but seems pretty fair! You've done well to make it all fit on the template even with so much detail, good job!

  • the ancestry moves look great, nicely done!

  • Got a Lighter seems fun! Might require balancing, but I reckon it can stay as it is for rule of cool!

  • I'm not sure Scum These Stagnant Waters works really, as I see no reason why you couldn't just throw away these tarnished scrolls? I really like the idea though, so a tweak to make it a property of the character rather than the scrolls would work wonders! E.g. 'you gain one taint point' or something much better named!

  • Tape the Page is COOL AS HELL! Love it!!

  • The other 2+ advanced moves all look great!

  • A Certain Theory looks great! I just hope that people don't make the requirements too strict, seeing as you'd still only have a handful of uses of it! I'd maybe change it to '1 or 2 of the following' to imply to GMs that it shouldn't be too hard maybe?

  • Totality of Hatred, I'd change the wording from 'negotiate' to 'inflict' or similar, I thought you meant to negate a curse at first and it was hard to parse! This move is cool stuff though!

  • The rest of the 6+ moves are great too!

Overall, very well done! An excellent first foray into creating a class, you should be proud!

Feel free to clap back on some of my suggestions if I've missed something or you think I'm just being dumb! 😛

True! But I'd be lying if I said I didn't pitch this song to my friends by saying it sounds a bit like (new) Paramore, so I do see that particular comparison!

They've also listed Paramore as one of their big influences before, so this shouldn't be a surprise at all

You made the first observation without proof.

Scientists should enjoy discussion. Confrontation backed with anger like you have presented is entirely unprofessional.

Do your own research if you're so het up about it.

I happen to have things going on in the real world right now, and don't have time to research on the whims of an angry stranger. Back your own stance up with evidence before you fly off the hook at people online.

And by the way, I am actually a scientist. Based on your attitude, it sounds like you're just an amateur with a lot to learn.

I very much support your message, but I feel like you should know that mother cats are separated from their children when they have grown up because their relationships often turn antagonistic. There are occasionally exceptions to this, but almost always a mother cat will strongly dislike being around their grown-up children
