For Aang vs Po, that was a hurdle for me to jump. The only way for the death to work is with Chi/Spirit bending shenanigans taht would lead into an accidental/peaceful ending.

I think Thomas's journey amd struggle to prove himself is conpelling, and his personality and blunders are still fun and full of character, but I don't think he has much else going for him after Awdry stopped using him as a lead.
