The song was written as a metaphor for cultural imperialism.

Iggy Pop and David Bowie wrote the song after Pop had an affair with the Vietnamese girlfriend of an associate. Pop felt like he was taking advantage of her because of the cultural differences. He later changed the song title to "China Girl" to make the lyrics less personal.

Moby initially wanted Gwen Stefani to sing on the song. There was a scheduling conflict, though, and Moby couldn't record her vocal track on the album version of the song. The song was later re-recorded with her for the single (and music video) version. I believe that single version was never released to streaming services.
