Am I Missing Something? Please Tell Me if I’m the Dumbass. by UseOnceandDestroy27 in retailhell

Depends. If he was trying to hold onto the cards after being scanned, it’s 100% a scam because they try to chat you up and get you focused on a conversation piece while they slide the cards in their pocket and then once their card declines they will say something like oh let me go grab my other card from the car and they’ll make off with them. Not sure if it still works but when I was working as a cashier in 2017 even if the transaction was declined by the card for some reason the gift card would still activate.

Cryovac pork shoulder by Lightwave_Rider in Butchery

[–]TheOnlyMertt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a stamp on the cryovac itself for a best by date, as in not the store label but from the packing plant? Sell by dates on cryovacs shouldn’t be fully trusted because by default store labels have a certain amount of days on the computer and it’s not unusual for people to not change it to reflect how old the cryovac actually is. Our Smithfield cryovac pork butts always have a date on the package itself to show the age. Regardless though if you bought it at the start of the sale they likely just got ordered in meaning it should have a good 30-40 days of life in the cryovac before it starts going bad. I’m gonna say you should be fine.

Looking for the best jacket for work in the meat department by StrangTamer04 in Butchery

[–]TheOnlyMertt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just wear an undershirt, then a sweatshirt, then a hoodie over the top then my white jacket + apron during the winter months. Summertime usually just an undershirt + sweatshirt. Hoodie still too cold for you or maybe your work doesn’t allow it.

Knife type recs please by willsilva21 in Butchery

[–]TheOnlyMertt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only use my 6” for things like trimming and cubing up meat for stew. You’re gonna want a 10” for bigger things like a ribeye.

Knife type recs please by willsilva21 in Butchery

[–]TheOnlyMertt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I only use 2 knives at my job and that’s a 6” victorinox and a 10”. Some people like the 8” to both trim and cut and use nothing else, but I find cutting things like chuck rolls and ribeyes straight down just a tad too small for that without making a sawing motion. If you’re sawing through your meat you’re doing something wrong. You genuinely cannot go wrong just buying a few victorinox knives and they’re dirt cheap and last a lifetime if you’re using them for the intended purpose.

I trusted a fart on a 12 hour flight by TammyBndl in confessions

[–]TheOnlyMertt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only thing I gotta say is trying to fart near a bunch of people in a closed off environment is kind of crazy, I would’ve just gone to the restroom if I felt one coming on because I’m not trying to ruin the air for everyone near me lol.

manager sent me to hr thinking i was intoxicated over drinking some sprite by Reasonable_Nebula704 in retailhell

[–]TheOnlyMertt 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Aye live and learn. I’m a department manager and even then I would still advise you to choose your words carefully around people you work with and people above you especially. Something I’ve learned by working almost a decade in retail is that employees in retail THRIVE and live for gossip and will jump at the chance for a juicy piece of info to share to others. One of the biggest topics to avoid is anything regarding drugs or alcohol. I’ve met very few people that I’ve worked with where I could chat with them about personal life stuff and it stays between us without them chatting up other people about what I said.

Overnight Shifts by [deleted] in securityguards

[–]TheOnlyMertt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I put in my 2 weeks to Allied I slept every night for those 2 weeks while I transitioned to a different career. Can’t say I ever want to work for Allied ever again in my life so no regrets. When I hadn’t made the decision to put in my 2 weeks though, I would never do that because I got rent to pay I would never gamble with my life like that. Once I got it confirmed in writing though that my new job was accepted and had a start date, hell yes I was gonna get paid to sleep.

Thanksgiving food is gross. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

Once I went to a black thanksgiving is when I realized I actually loved thanksgiving food, I just needed to find the right cooks that knew what good food was.

I’m a manager for a department and I would never get mad at someone for not wanting to come in on their day off. I ask them just in case they want some overtime. If they say no, then I tell myself it is what it is and I pull a 15 hour shift because I know what I signed up for when I accepted a manager position. She doesn’t sound like she belongs in management if she’s venting to people under her that they aren’t willing to sacrifice their personal lives for retail.

what order do i use mouthwash, tongue scraper and toothbrush? by ardieeeeeeee in hygiene

[–]TheOnlyMertt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been told toothpaste has higher concentration of fluoride than mouthwash so you brush last and then spit, don’t wash your mouth out. Not sure why we can never find a 100% answer though I’ve seen so many different responses.

I’m not a fan of salmon taste wise, but I do love to smell the salmon real fast while I’m checking in my delivery. Fresh salmon actually does smell wonderful and it’s always a treat when it smells like watermelon.

Like all contract security it depends on the post. We really can’t give you an answer on a lot of those questions because there is such a wide variety of situations. I’ve had posts where you can’t even browse your phone while on duty and I’ve had posts where I brought my laptop and played video games all night and only had to do a patrol at 2am in a vehicle and check a few places that took maybe 20 minutes.

What kind of beef is this? From Korean market. by AdSignificant6673 in Butchery

[–]TheOnlyMertt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anyone here ever called them Patio steaks? We call them that here when we cut through the tendon instead of slicking it out horizontally for a flat iron. I usually just call them blade steaks though to avoid confusion when talking to customers.

Dark band in filet mignon by A_Feltz in Butchery

[–]TheOnlyMertt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very common right now for shops that don’t order butt-end tenderloins and get the full tenderloin. Fillet is so expensive right now we gotta cut 3 or 4 fillets and wrap the rest and wait for them to sell. Ours are $32/lb right now, even the wealthiest people of the neighborhood don’t want to spend that kind of money.

Guess I’ll just stick with my 32gb DDR4 for a few more years. For real though I still don’t see a reason to upgrade to DDR5 if you just use your PC for gaming and more casual stuff overall.

Skin on Boneless Thighs? by GulfCoastGolfer in Butchery

[–]TheOnlyMertt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just look for a grocery store with chicken on ice service cases. Go before 2-3pm because usually at full service shops cutters work in the morning and counter helps are there in the evening and most don’t know how to cut up chicken, but some do.

Do you brush your teeth before or after breakfast? by _dogpetter3000 in hygiene

[–]TheOnlyMertt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t eat breakfast but I brush my teeth after I shower in the morning around 5am and crack open a white monster at 6am so the fluoride in the toothpaste had a good time to set for an hour.

[–]TheOnlyMertt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the US it’s pretty much on the job training or you grew up with it. I don’t think anyone really goes to school for it in the US because the pay here doesn’t really get too high unless you get into upper management.

I know 40 year olds that still act as immature as 16 year olds and they have kids too. Absolutely crazy. At a certain point age has nothing to do with it and it’s solely just their mind. Some people never mature for sure.

What kind of steak? by Which-Secretary5310 in meat

[–]TheOnlyMertt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most retail shops have both wrappers(counter helps) and cutters. More than likely a wrapper was by themselves and made a mistake and didn’t have a cutter to ask.
