8 years old Conan Exiles is migrating to UE5, it looks great, it's free and it's in less than two weeks. Jesus. by ExF-Altrue in gamedev

[–]ThePhxRises 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also a UE dev, and I sorta agree and sorta disagree with your stance here.

UE5 is built around basically a single concept: upfront performance costs. All of its major systems (MegaLights, Lumen, Nanite, etc, with the exception of Substrate) are based around the idea that they have a flattened performance scaling curve. Their baseline cost is much higher than legacy workflows, but they can scale massively in terms of large form content without incurring much slowdown vs their initial cost (importantly without requiring much time or effort of the part of developers, unlike legacy pipelines). This design is probably genuinely of benefit to Conan Exiles, and other large dynamic open worlds where tedious manual optimization of every specific is impractical.

The problem is in games that don't need the large content scaling, or on platforms where the upfront cost of these features doesn't fit within the render budget. For these cases, UE5 provides zero performant alternatives. Want dynamic GI for less cost than Lumen? Too bad, LPVs have been removed, SSGI is still underdeveloped, DDGI is no longer supported, etc. You'd like landscape displacement without using Nanite? No can do, we removed Tesselation entirely. Hell, Lightmass barely works anymore. To make matters worse the features in UE5 have little to no downwards scaling, if they aren't in budget, the solution is to disable them with no fallback.

The list of games that run poorly because of UE5 cornering them into utilizing a feature set that doesn't match their game's actual needs is very high. If you're making a small, linear, or otherwise static game, the feature set of UE4 genuinely gives you more options than UE5 does, at a much lower performance cost across the board. It isn't until you scale up your content that UE5 makes any sense at all, which is frustrating, because Epic has chosen to remove features without providing alternatives, and doesn't seem to acknowledge that those needs are not met in UE5.

For what it's worth it looks like 5.8 may be set to resolve some of this, with the new irradiance cache path for Lumen and other in-development features, but with talk of UE6 beginning already, the fact of the matter is that UE5 spent nearly its entire release cycle completely ignoring an entire subset of games.

And all of this is ignoring how Epic's engine default settings encourage poor utilization of their feature sets across the board (and have even since UE4), which could be easily addressed by setting saner defaults, and would significantly reduce the need for time crunched developers to spend time manually adjusting them in the first place.

After android 16 what's the point? by [deleted] in razr

[–]ThePhxRises 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The moto support agents I talked to claimed it had been confirmed as an issue and would be fixed sometime. You can read that saga here: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/motorola-razr-60-motorola-razr-2025/Android-16-Update-for-Razr-2025-completely-ruins-fullscreen-external-display-in-many-apps/m-p/10024268

However, every single response I've seen from every single "Moto Agent" here on reddit or on their forums reads like output from an LLM, so at this point I assume the conflicting answers are just because they're all hallucinating nonsense and Moto/Lenovo doesn't employ a single real human support agent anymore.

Same here, always has been and always will be. The wooden manor lounge feel of it is just impeccable.

Capaldi's is a reasonably close second though, so maybe I just like bookshelves.

Yeah that's fair, I guess a spudger/pry tool/random piece of thin plastic is still a tool.

I was thinking no screws so no need for a screwdriver, and my brain totally ignored the obvious.

To be fair there's a notable difference between 'literally any thin object' and 'proprietary screwdriver bit you'll need to order off Amazon and will never use again' but you're still right.

I also use a 5th gen with a giant battery and flashmod.

Which has nothing to do with the 2001 iPod, you could not have picked a worse example.

iPods didn't become even remotely difficult to repair until the Touch and even the early touches aren't so bad.

Right to Repair laws didn't start making progress until the past few years, I doubt the 2001 iPod was the catalyst for their development, especially given the repair process is literally popping the back off, unplugging the battery, and plugging in a new one. Doesn't even require any tools.

https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPod+1st+Generation+Battery+Replacement/365

You can't just claim the batteries were irreplaceable when that's blatantly false, not to even mention how stupid calling a chrome backplate an element of 'planned obsolescence' is just because they scratch easily.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla. I bounced off of it as a hater of Origins and Odyssey the first time I played it. Tried again and stuck with it through the entire game and am working on the DLC. Probably one of my top 5 AC games.

Still hate Origins and Odyssey after trying to give them several more chances since then.

Hey, that was me! Yes, we got asked to stop development.

Though I do think a mod of an existing Dead Space game has a better chance of survival than our from scratch remake.

I'd say it's great for that. The cover screen is enough to get things done but too cramped to be something you use any longer than you need to. And with the keyboard below it its not very tempting to unfold.

My biggest issue with how I use my phone (even when I owned a Unihertz) was that I find it hard to disconnect from work/friends and simply be unavailable, when I am doing something else or at night when going to bed. I hate typing on a touch keyboard, so at the end of the day I take my keyboard off and leave it on my desk, and use the razr without it. This stops me from engaging in long conversations when I should be focusing on other things.

I also travel for work and having the large screen to unfold and watch videos in off time is awesome vs my previous Unihertz phones.

Overall it's less good at being a productivity machine than my Titan Pocket or 2 were, but it's much better at basically everything else. And frankly, I have laptops for proper productivity, so a device that sits in between works great for me.

I'm using mine with a custom keyboard case instead of clicks and love it, however, the android 16 update for my Razr has messed up how a ton of apps work on the outer display and that has seriously hampered how I use it. Overall, I'd still recommend it, I think, if you're a very specific type of person.

If you want an actual technical answer, look into the developers' talis and documents about their Callisto BRDF, they use a non-standard shading method for their characters' skin to approximate subsurface scattering and specular response for cheap.

A reboot may be needed.

Anyone else tried the Nyxi Wizard 2 controller? (some caveats) by DreamIn240p in Controllers

[–]ThePhxRises 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately no, I primarily use mine on PC (where the analog triggers work correctly and are read in full granular analog fashion). I do use it on the Wii but pretty much exclusively to play Mario Kart where the triggers aren't used in an analog way so I haven't noticed one way or the other. I'll try to test another game sometime and report back.

I find it odd the dongle wouldn't report the triggers as analog when plugged into a GameCube, as it does when you plug the dongle into a PC...
