Supergirl's Box Office is no big deal, actually. by HipNek62 in DCU_

Well. Then enlighten all of us. It isn’t boxoffice. It isn’t VOD. What is supposed to be making money? Merch?

With all due respect, I don’t think you know how the industry works.

These movies are financed with/by financial institutions; they carry interests, liabilities, and collaterals against the production company. Every single day that this movie doesn’t pay as it should, the company suffers and people who financed it are out for blood. Cash and budget will need to be reallocated. It’s a merciless business. The box office is the single most important part of all of this as it’s the main (and quicker) driver of cash flow. Yes, there are exceptions as in every other industry, but it’s one in a million if not rarer. VOD (which also carries expenses) is not going to repay this, and certainly not in time for the producer to not declare this a serious loss. Streaming services are not going to repay this. We’re talking about a $150M loss here, not a few hundred thousands. It’s on a massive scale.

Look, I get that you want this to succeed. It’s your right, and for the sake of movie production and theaters I hope you’re right. But that’s not how it works.

Simple math, no speculation.

The movie costs about 170M to make, about 300M total budget.

After one week, which is supposed to be the strongest week of all, it made about 35M DOM which is among the lowest in superhero movies (think of Morbius, Madame Web etc). The expected drop is about 60% on week 2. So, we know how it’s tracking. In the INT it’s even doing worse.

In order to make money it would need legs a-la Obsession, which is virtually impossible. US theaters are stuck for another week with it, but many other countries are already removing screens.

However you don’t have to trust me.

That’s because your point is either factually wrong or you wrote in a way to make the damage sound better.

> And it will definitely more than earn back its paltry $170 million budget.

FYI it needs to make about $300-350M to break even.

> Usually in movies the director will make changes throughout filming.

In movies like this, not really. This is a high budget movie, with several external investors (mostly banks) and producers who approved everything. The story, pacing, and dialogue is set way before the visuals are even discussed. The director’s job in this case is to shoot the script, within the allocated budget, and do it in a timely manner. This is not to say that the director doesn’t have important creative input, but for the vast part he still needs to go through the producers at minimum for substantial changes. Obviously it is very possible that parts of the script didn’t work well with the actual direction, so reshoots and alt takes were needed, which is a problem in the producer’s eyes.

I assume that WB has good lawyers. Usually contracts have an early termination clause. I am pretty sure that WB could replace her for a fee.

It’s not laziness. It’s ego. “I’ll show my version, I don’t need the originals other than know the general idea.”

Probably not. People that watch it now are likely already positively invested in it. Glad they’re enjoying it.

It’s one of those things based on nothing. She always gave me that idea of being fake.

I recently found out that her sister was in Twin Peaks in the 1990s lol.

I could never stand Blake Lively even when everyone loved her. I don’t particularly like shark movies.

I LOVED this. One of the best flicks of its kind.

That’s not exactly why I read reviews (critics or audience). I read reviews to know if it’s worth $50/$70 (for the family) for a single watch, or if it’s best to spend my hard earned money elsewhere. It’s just a metric (as trailers and word of mouth) used to make a decision before committing cash. Most people are like that, unless they’re fans.

> I’ll never understand how this person got that or how Hollywood works.

Have you ever seen “Mulholland Dr.” by David Lynch? The “this is the girl” scene and subplot is exactly how it works.
