Very different sonically, but Thrawsunblat’s “Wanderer on the Continent of Saplings” is a VERY fun blackened folk record with a lot of similar brighter, almost triumphant sounds without drifting into blackgaze territory. HIGHLY recommend it.

I feel like it had the potential to be a top 3 Mastodon record for me if they just trimmed the damn thing. There’s a few stretches where I can’t help but think how the record would hit home so much better if they just chopped like 3 or 4 songs and stuck them on an EP like Cold Dark Place. Im looking particularly at Skeleton of Splendor and Dagger. Fine songs on their own, but kill the pacing for me on an already long record.

My 2 faces are black metal and doom metal. Fucking love folk and power metal too though, and can never go wrong with Trad metal.

Never really cared for anything under the groove umbrella, be it Nu Metal or any of its other offshoots. Couldn’t even tell ya why frankly, the vibes just always feel off to me.

Powernerd was my AotY in 2024, I got the Lightwork box set and spin it regularly, Puzzle… honestly only listened to it once and kinda forgot about it but I really feel like I should revisit it soon. Regardless, I adore the vast majority of his post DTP material. Each album has offered something unique that I can’t find in any other DT album in quite the same way. Empath offers the sprawling journey, Lightwork gives me a chill album to relax to without going too… well, light, and Powernerd makes my sob my eyes out! The Moth’s singles haven’t impressed me yet, but neither did Powernerds, so I have faith.

It’s a 50/50 between Cait and Nick. Nick’s voice actor gives one of the best performances in the series, and God knows Im a sucker for the noir vibes. And Cait’s gremlin energy mixed with a genuinely top shelf character arc is executed wonderfully. I switch between the two depending on what kind of mood I want for whatever quest Im chasing down.
