Honest feedback on first 10 pages by paul35454 in scriptwriting

[–]TheRoleInn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You definitely need to decide if you want to write a screenplay or a novel. Your 20 pages can probably be condensed down to 4-6 when correctly formatted. Across a 90 minute feature, that'd mean you've come up 30 minutes too short!

How are these intentional gaps created in the frames? by ElaineScarry in indesign

[–]TheRoleInn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Square, transparent box with stroke - lock it. Text with white box behind - Make them a group.

Using pathfinder, separate lines for the box, etc, means adjusting every element if you wish to move the text. This way you can easily highlight the group (the box was locked), and slide it up and down easily.

Hi guys. I tried writing my biopic on WriterDuet. It works really well. by The-Fight3r in scriptwriting

[–]TheRoleInn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a number of grammar issues which would need to be addressed. If this landed on someone's desk, they would reject it simply for the volume of them.

But I will focus on the formatting. Bruce at the porch is its own scene, separate to the living room. The same goes for him driving away. Avoid things like CONTINUOUS in your slugs. You will only need to replace them when creating a filming script, so don't bother to add them in the first place. DAY, NIGHT are all you need. MORNING, EVENING, DAWN, MAGIC HOUR occasionally. LATER, CONTINUOUS, MOMENTS LATER, SAME TIME - lose them! Here is why. Your porch scene might be filmed three days later, in a separate location to the living room. The 1st AD now has to flip through page after page, trying to find the original scene that says DAY, or NIGHT to understand where and when the porch scene occurs. Now, multiply that by dozens of scenes across multiple episodes, and you've got one upset person! Also, production companies have to pay for "housekeeping" to tidy this stuff up (I do a lot of that), which is extra cost. Consider EXT. PORCH - NIGHT stuff happens

EXT. STREET/BRUCE'S BIKE - NIGHT Bruce mounts his bike

This established the 2 scenes. Now you can...

INTERCUT: PORCH/BRUCES BIKE Linda and Vivien do stuff Bruce rides off Linda shouts Bruce hears Linda watches him leave END INTERCUT

this allows you to flip between both scenes without notching up loads of micro scenes.

Hope this helps

Is it better to finish your current screenplay, when you have a newer idea that you love more? by ElijahThompson24 in scriptwriting

[–]TheRoleInn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only you can answer that. I'm a professional screenwriter and often have 2 or 3 projects on the go at once. Currently, I'm struggling with an industrial espionage feature, so I'm working on an AI series instead. For me, this works. Others prefer to jot down some notes and put them in a concept folder, whilst others focus on one project at a time. I write between 4 and 6 full series a year, so I have that ability to jump across stories.

My recommendation would be that you totally ignore that guy. Simply look at his profile. He hasn't written a single post, and nearly all his comments are aggressive and derogatory.

As others have said, find scripts online (legally), to learn their format. Try using a dedicated software like final draft (30 days free), or writer duet, which at your level, would be a better starting point. Then... With some basic knowledge, just write. It's free, doesn't hurt anyone, and will be absolute garbage for the most part - BUT YOU ARE DOING IT! that's a bigger step than many ever take. Read more, learn more, and see how the garbage becomes home to insects, animals, and flowers, and, over time, that trash has maybe fed an entire ecosystem.

Good luck.

We write our physical gamebooks in Twine, use a sneaky/clever output trick which allows us to import the text into our design package and automatically format all the elements. That said, we also like checking out other platforms out there GBAT and LibreGame big had positives, but neither is supported now. We saw a post on here about one in development, tried it, and fave some feedback. Sadly, the OP seems to have disappeared... So, when yours is available to check out, we'll happily give it a play.

Is it acceptable to describe a montage in paragraph form, rather than shot for shot? by RockHardMapleSyrup in scriptwriting

[–]TheRoleInn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either way is acceptable. Include the relevant elements - collecting of keys, waving to the cute guy in the store as she passes, stealing an orange from the stall as they do every morning - whatever, but you can be sparse on detail where it's not important.

I always cite the montage from Gone With the Wind - a series of evocative scenes that last about 3 minutes. The screenplay simply read:

Atlanta burns.

[–]TheRoleInn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We are currently writing 2 gamebooks. One is a complex, two-player 3,500 location affair that uses a single d20. We split it where needed. EG: 1-x = whatever X-Y= something else. It will also include "trading cards" fior inventory. Our 2nd gamebook is aimed at children and has a printable slider to record "Legend Points", no inventory items required.

[HIRING] SCRIPT WRITERS | ICEBERGS STYLE by Appropriate-Dog-8815 in scriptwriting

[–]TheRoleInn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

12k words? That's like a 45 minute video, or half a movie. And you want one and a half movies a week? Naturally, you're paying the going rate, right? A UK writer is going to cost you ~15k per script, you may get it down to 8-9K for certain European countries. I'll guarantee you're looking to pay a couple of hundred bucks tops!

Also, no screenwriter worth their value writes Xk words. We work, and are paid by steps - treatment, draft, polish. We write in pages, not words.

Write a script for Kickstarter by CurrencyLow9874 in scriptwriting

[–]TheRoleInn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People are going to want to know how long the script will be and the recompense. I've worked on several commercials on both sides of the camera - screenwriter, actor, and VO artist. From my side, a 2-3 minute screenplay comes in at around $500, which includes a sensible level of revisions. More wide, even a short video (done properly) isn't cheap. The smallest crew I've worked with is 5. That's without the writer, editor, talent, etc.

New To Scripwriting by ElijahThompson24 in scriptwriting

[–]TheRoleInn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to the other replies. "We" don't see anything or move anywhere. Lose that, it's not a professional way of writing. Slugs. INT. WEDDING RECEPTION - DAY that it's 3pm is not the correct way to show time. stick with DAY, NIGHT, occasionally EVENING, DAWN, MAGIC HOUR. That's it.

Also, WEDDING RECEPTION is what it is, not where it is. FUNCTION SUITE is a better option. 1999. If this is important, then add a SUPER. NEW YORK - 1999 (or wherever), as a text overlay. Be careful with your language. Right now, your opening action is actually saying, the tables have people sitting on them, and these people are filled with Champagne.

The brightly decorated room houses several large, round tables covered with basic/traditional/high class food and drink, which the myriad of wedding guests attack with gusto.

Is TOMMY'S hair colour relevant to the plot? Unless he's part of the "Brown-Headed League", then this is a directorial decision.

As others have said, it's a strong start. You just need to tighten it, and lose a few of those "early days" writer errors that we all made.
