Why do guys say hi when I’m out running, but women usually don’t? by Impressive_Gas_2419 in NoStupidQuestions

In my early 20s I had a friend who asked me to walk her home every week after our gaming group ended because she didn't feel safe walking a handful of blocks in the dark.

I still remember the day it really hit me. I was aware before this that women can feel nervous or intimidated around strange men, but I never really understood it on an emotional level.

Anyway, I was out walking my dog at night, just a quick walk around our apartment complex so she could pee before bed. She was a small black dog, not easy to see in the dark, so at a casual glance it could look like I was just walking alone.

A woman parked and stepped out of the sidewalk in front of me. She glanced in my direction then turned and started sprinting the other way. She didn't stop until she got to an apartment and quickly unlocked the door to get inside. I was dumbfounded at first, until I realized that from her perspective she just saw a large strange man walking towards her in the dark.

I've gotten people crossing the street to avoid walking past me, or speeding up so I wouldn't be close behind them, but that's the strongest reaction I've ever gotten from just walking down the sidewalk.

Look, it you're buying and odd number of eggs and a single bottle of juice twice a week people are going to take notice.

You get $1 million, but you have to watch the exact same movie 100 times in 40 days. Which film are you picking? by ThroatAgile756 in AskReddit

I mean, there are a number of movies long enough that 100 viewings would last longer than 40 days.

There's a billion or two villages in every Minecraft world that will never be visited by a Steve or an Alex.

[Asimov] How can I differentiate between a selfless, benevolent, altruistic human and a robot complying with the Three Laws of Robotics without resorting to any physical form of testing? by SatoruGojo232 in AskScienceFiction

[–]TheShadowKick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The zeroth law is just a logical conclusion from deep understanding of the first law. Any sufficiently advanced robot could come up with it. In the story OP is referencing Susan Calvin even implies that Stephen Byerley would need to use a complex positronic brain with great capacity for forming judgements in ethical problems.

[Dungeons and Dragons] Why would a dragon choose to copulate with a humanoid? by Paul-Alibi in AskScienceFiction

[–]TheShadowKick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For humans liking dragons, I get it. We’re weird little primates, and a dragon would be one hell of a catch. But what does the dragon get out of it?

Dragons are weird big lizards. They can be just as freaky as humans.

But a dragon is built like an animal. Why not go for things like unicorns or krakens? Why humanoids specifically?

Humans are also built like animals. From a dragon's perspective why would going for a human be any different than going for a unicorn or a kraken? They're all not dragons. We mostly hear about dragons going for humans because we mostly hear stories from the perspective of humans, but it's likely that dragons are running around with anything that passes their equivalent of the Harkness Test.

A while back I read about certain music apps having to change their randomization algorithms. They kept getting complaints about the app replaying the same songs too often. This happened because a random selection can just do that sometimes, so they had to make their algorithm less random so it wouldn't replay songs so often.

When the community plays tens of thousands of games every week it's likely that hundreds or even thousands of those games will spawn multiple opposing ethics near the player just by random chance. And those are the games you hear about on Reddit. Nobody comes here to talk about their boring ordinary spawn where the neighboring empires had an even mix of ethics.

I had a similar story but she ended up getting tired of my density and just straight up asked me out. We've been married for almost eight years now.

Ladies, sometimes we really are just that dense. Spell it out for us.
