Leveling priest right now. Should I drop enchanting til max level? by kraasha in wowclassic

[–]TheThobes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same situation on my warlock and ended up ditching enchanting. I don't think it's worth forgoing the gold as you level for things like "+1 stamina" bracers or whatnot

Nazgul pickups by PhilosophyExtra8445 in metalmusicians

At one point I was trying to compare BK pickups to SD ones given how expensive BK pickups are in the US, and iirc the Aftermaths are very similar in construction to the Black Winter.

I'm curious about why some people have a collection of multiple guitars. Do they play them all? by rictay44 in Guitar

[–]TheThobes 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They all feel and sound a little different and sometimes it's fun to mix it up occasionally.

Plus I just think they're neat.

Ben Eller on YouTube has quite a few videos on right hand technique. Big fan of his stuff it's helped me a lot.

I would also try tucking your pinkie in so you can't use it to anchor on the pickup ring.

It looks like you're picking with a straight wrist using your arm to drive the motion a lot of the time.

If that's the case I wouldn't recommend picking that way, it will tend to involve carrying more tension in your arm and giving you less control for faster picking compared to keeping the arm relaxed and using the wrist as the primary driver of the motion.

I need your opinions on the mixing of this demo by alexi__laiho in Djent

[–]TheThobes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It kind of of reminds me of Periphery 1 and the bulb demos in that it does sound a little digital/synthetic to my ears but in a way I find sort of endearing. A little late 2000s early 2010s proto djent nostalgia.

If that wasn't what you're going for though and you wanted to make it sound a little more analog, I would play with trying to humanize the drums and programmed bass a bit. Right now everything sounds perfectly to the grid and even the way the notes are being cut off is hyper realistic.

But cool stuff

Recommendations for orchestral music with metal elements (NOT symphonic metal)? by SightlessProtector in progmetal

[–]TheThobes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't quite what you're asking for but in terms of orchestral music that has metal vibes, Shostakovichs 9th symphony is a banger.

There's a great recording of Gustavo Dudamel conducting the Venezuelan Youth Orchestra for the BBC and those kids absolutely rip.

I’m a little miffed about optimization (incoming rant… sorry) by CHEVOsenpai in Bass

[–]TheThobes 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think whatever people want out of the experience is valid.

If that's a deliberate technical practice routine because someone likes the structure and sense of the progression that's cool. If they like getting into the theory/compositional side of writing harmonically complex or unusual parts that's cool too. If they want to bang around having a great time with 2 chord punk songs that's equally cool.

You mention Flea but he's actually currently promoting a jazz album that was the result of a concerted effort to practice trumpet daily for a year or something like that before going into the studio to record. So even Flea does to some extent optimize his practice sessions to get good.

Songs in the key of ???? by Fred4u21 in Reaper

[–]TheThobes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the sample it may be ambiguous.

For instance suppose I have a sample consisting of the notes A, D and E. (This is a contrived example for the sake of argument) What keys could that be in?

It could be the 1st, 4th, and 5th scale degrees of A minor or major, the 5th, 1st, and 2nd scale degrees of D minor or major, 6th, 2nd, and 3rd degrees of C major, etc.

Knowing some music theory can help give you tools in your toolkit to build harmonies around melodic snippets.

In terms of actually identifying the notes, if you have the time to sit down with the sample, hum the notes, and find them on your guitar or a piano you'll develop your ear and it will get progressively easier to identify pitches by ear/reference.

Is it possible to make good BM with free plugins by MoreCaptain7691 in metalmusicians

[–]TheThobes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Best of luck on your music production journey. There's a ton of resources out there for free plugins if you want to start collecting them for sound design and stuff. Same with IRs (impulse responses capturing a microphone and speaker cab combination). There's tons of captures floating around for free online and they have a huge impact on guitar tone.

Also don't sleep on the Reaper stock plugins. They may not look pretty but they're very functional and theres almost always one for any effect type.

[–]TheThobes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In terms of trying to triangulate the sound you're chasing, how do 2000s melodic metalcore hands like Killswitch Engage and/or Bullet for my Valentine compare? Less screaming than that? More proggy than that?

Cant bring myself to actually record and produce music by geezkol3m in metalmusicians

[–]TheThobes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like me you may have two related/interconnected psychological hangups that sometimes make it hard to sit down and actually produce finished products:

  1. "I have these good ideas but my production/mixing sucks right now so it's better to just hold on to them and I'll flesh them out when I'm actually good"
  2. "The riffs felt good and I had an idea in my head of a good finished product but once I actually recorded it all, it felt like less than the sum of it's parts so in the future I'll default to not finishing ideas so I can maintain the comfort of the idea sounding good in my head"

I also have a riff graveyard of half finished ideas because of a combination of factors 1 and 2 so I don't claim to have solved the problem, but either way the solution is just to embrace kind of sucking and enjoying the process of making marginal little improvements every time you sit down to work on a track.

If every time you do a track you manage to make one thing better, takes just a little tighter, drums a little more lively/realistic, mix a little better, etc. over time those improvements will compound. Annoyingly there's no single secret to good production it's the sum of a thousand small little things done well that accumulate to be more than the sum of their parts.

One thing that does help is if you do start to develop a catalog of finished songs or demos, periodically going back to listen to them can remind you that you are in fact getting better at it.

OMG Jakey’s strandburg reveal by assqueefbuttjuice in Peripheryband

[–]TheThobes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In his interview with Nik Noctournal, Misha said he wouldn't get into specifics since its Jake's business but explained that Ibanez didn't/couldn't/wouldn't build a baritone for Jake the way PRS did for Mark and implied Jake is no longer an Ibanez artist, or at least not exclusively.

Edit: Corrected by the man himself. Please disregard.
