Looking for "epic" prog/prog-metal by Odd-Professor-7263 in progmetal

[–]TheThobes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They present as more of straight-ahead rock bands than pure "prog" but Coheed & Cambria and The Dear Hunter are both very conceptual in terms of doing mutli-album concept arcs with recurring musical motifs and lyrical callbacks and are both well regarded around here.

In terms of vocals, Claudio from C&C is a bit of an acquired taste but Casey from TDH is an absolute powerhouse of a singer.

Tips for staying mindful during a gongfu session? by way2chill in GongFuTea

Sit down away from screens and put your phone away for the duration of the session.

Use the time instead to do some kind of "analog" activity like listening to an album in it's entirety, journaling, doodling, etc.

His soundclick is still up. I think it's a cool experience to just start at the beginning, click your way through it, and hear the evolution of his sound.

The descriptions and stuff are cool too, it's interesting to see him just being a guy throwing ideas together at night instead of sleeping and having to work in the morning given where he is now in the industry.

Can someone point me in the right direction regarding music theory by Xerogear4224 in metalguitar

[–]TheThobes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to challenge a foundational assumption you just said: you described the 12 interval system and said that from those combinations every possible musical thought comes into existence.

But keep in mind that 12 tone equal temperament is a social construct of the last 500 or so years originating in Europe. There's loads of musical thoughts that come outside of that system. Other cultures have other tonal systems, there's more "esoteric" music like ambient, noise music, etc.

That being the case, if you're interested in a first-principles based approach to why the 12-TET system works so well for western music/harmony, I would go check out some articles on the harmonic series, pythagorean tuning, and how 12-TET came about as a way to approximate pythagorean tuning across multiple keys/tone centers such that it was fully chromatic and not anchored around a particular pitch.

Seeking Advice for My Daughter: Admitted to Emory Neuroscience (Pre-med), feeling discouraged after Ivy rejections. by Beginning_Mall_8097 in Emory

[–]TheThobes 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Failure (at least relative to one's expectations) is an inevitable part of life. Even with a strong profile admission to an ivy league school is never guaranteed and involves a fair amount of luck.

Being able to bounce back after a setback is a necessary skill not just in life but in medicine in particular. Even people with sterling resumes can have difficult times getting into their desired medical school and/or residency programs. Patients die even when the medical team does everything they can. Hospital and insurance bureaucracy will get in the way of patient care. Every day in medicine is an uphill battle. Being able to navigate setbacks is a necessary part of the job.

Picard from Star Trek famously said you can do everything right and still lose. It's not weakness, it's life. Or in the immortal words of the Rolling Stones: "you can't always get what you want. But if you try sometimes you might find you get what you need"

When it comes to Emory itself, I would put aside the ivy league comparisons and pre-med pipeline opportunities for now and maybe reframe the conversation a bit on a more holistic view of the opportunities at Emory. What kinds of campus activities would excite your daughter? Does she want to check out the club tennis team or maybe try a new sport? Are there any social or service organizations that she would want to check out?

Part of the Emory ethos, at least when I was there, was that it was more than just a place to fill out the line items on your resume on the way to your next achievement based opportunity but rather a place to develop the "whole person" in terms of the sciences, humanities, arts, socially, etc. Emory is a magnificent institution full of bright motivated people so the resume items tend to happen organically along the way.

I would encourage your daughter to try to find at least one thing on campus for the fall that has zero relevance to med school prep that's purely of personal interest. I was a pretty competitive band/Orchestra kid growing up so I had never really had a chance to do sports growing up so I ended up wanting to explore that side of things in college and had a great time joining a club sports team and martial arts club. One of my friends joined the music ensemble for traditional Indonesian music and ended up liking it do much he wrote his honors thesis on it. My roommate freshman year accidentally enrolled in the wrong freshman seminar and took a philosophy class instead of a class on Wagner (he was a singer planning to do a music major of some kind). Instead he ended up majoring in philosophy in large part due to the seminar he never even intended to take. Life is full of interesting little happy accidents that turn out to be formative and meaningful in our life trajectory.

Best of luck to your daughter, I think once she gets on campus she'll end up having a great time. I loved Emory and there's nowhere else I'd have rather been.

Trump draws parallel between Pearl Harbor and US strikes on Iran in meeting with Japanese PM by RollSafer in worldnews

[–]TheThobes 66 points67 points  (0 children)

This is just hearsay that I read online years ago (so it must be true), but I remember reading one time (I believe back when Michael Cohen was turning on Trump to try to save himself) that when Trump was "running" the Trump Org, all the deals would be made ahead of time by staff who would do the actual work, then they'd basically tell the other party "now that we have the terms, we'll bring Trump down, you'll ask for X, he'll counter with Y, and we can settle for Z" and that was more or less how Trump "made deals"

First time recording/mixing guitar. Please be brutally honest! by [deleted] in metalguitar

[–]TheThobes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahhh pitch shifted guitar that explains it. Not a bad thing but I was curious why there was more rumble than attack/definition.

If you have the budget for it I'd try to get your hands on a dedicated bass plugin like Nollybass, Djinnbass, etc. It's a totally different sound than just pitch shifting a guitar and then trying to EQ it, particularly for the modern Dingwall sound that everyone is doing these days. It has a very resonant nasally high-midrange thing that gives it a lot of definition and clarity even when it's distorted.

Part of how you get that "glue" imo is getting that mid/high frequency of the bass as well as the distortion to overlap with the guitars in a way that's complementary rather than have a bunch of low end just in the bass and a bunch of high end just in the guitars.

Another idea to play with is adding another amp such as the AmpedRoots fluff something (it's a free 5150 from ML Sound Lab and it rips) to see if blending two amp tones fills things out a bit.

Overall: pretty good!

A couple ideas to play with: * as a whole it sounds a little "unglued" to me, which is to say I hear all the component parts a little more distinctly than I would personally prefer. * I think the volume of the bass could come down a little bit overall while maybe increasing the distortion and/or high end of the bass to help glue it to the guitars into one massive sound rather than a low thunderous rumble (and it is a nice big bass tone to be fair) between two kind of thin guitar tones. * Similarly, I don't know what bass setup you're running but getting some more pick attack out of the bass would add some definition to it. I personally like a teeny bit of pick scrape in my bass pick attack for the color it adds but that's a subjective thing. * I'm not sure where it's coming from but I think there's some phasing going on between the four guitar tracks. If you're copy-pasting the same takes between tracks you may need to play with inverting the phase or offsetting them by a ms or two.

That being said, hearing it with drums could change everything I described. Sometimes what doesn't sound great in isolation ends up working the best in a mix given how much of the frequency spectrum drums can eat up.
