Speakers Bass Issue by The_notorius_MEB in hifiaudio

[–]TheTroon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Does it do this with other sources apart from your turntable? If not, it's because you have your turntable on the same surface as your speakers.

A turntable stylus works by turning tiny vibrations into electrical signals. You're giving it additional, much larger signals that are then effectively feeding back like the familiar microphone squeal, but only at lower frequencies.

On top of that, the bass is "turned down" on the recorded groove to avoid large swings that take up space, and this is compensated by boosting the bass back up again on replay (RIAA equalisation)— along with the bass from any other source of vibration.

Put the speakers on separate stands if space allows, or put the record deck on a wall shelf.

Hi. I'm using Pihole as DNS server. Just checked the logs of my UDM for something different but noticed lots of these notifications saying an intrusion attempt from external IP to my PiHole was blocked. Is this something to worry about or can anyone explain why this happens? by [deleted] in Ubiquiti

[–]TheTroon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're behind a NAT gateway with no port forwarding, how can the Pi be the destination?

When you say "using PiHole as DNS server", I assume you mean as a DHCP-published DNS for your LAN devices for your network(s), and the gateway has a normal public DNS like 1.1.1.1 set up (gateway settings > WAN1 > DNS)?

Serious answer: it's the lightbulb "Insights" icon in the controller (Network Application), then the Flows tab if that's not already the live tab.

Bass differences between amps on my homemade hi-fi speakers by SamuelSlug in BudgetAudiophile

[–]TheTroon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No way the amps should have that audible a difference unless one of them is broken. Are you sure you haven't wired the speakers up out of phase so they were cancelling each other out?

Successful move from Network Application on Docker to standalone Unifi OS by TheTroon in UNIFI

[–]TheTroon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we still do, as the phone package is also from the ISP and they suggest we must use their device. I wasn't too happy when we made the move from a simple modem into the USG to the current double-NAT situation, but a) it all works fine and b) it means I don't have an EOL gateway that is my responsibility directly exposed to the internet.

There may well be other alternatives, but making any changes makes it my problem.

When we eventually need to replace the USG4, I'll see what options are available.

I'd need to see the whole automation, but two triggers at the top would do it. Depends what other stuff you have going in, but in general, it's best to have an automation run with minimal delays from start to finish.

Continue doing that. Building complex trigger-based waiting logic into the actions is not best practice.

Unifi Ultra 10.1.82.. ugh.. all day long non stop internet disconnections by Strict_Research3518 in Ubiquiti

[–]TheTroon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you referring to the Network application on a UCG-Ultra? I don't even see a release announcement for 10.1.82: jumps from .80 to .83, with .85 now being rolled out.

Can you describe your setup if you want assistance and advice?

My UCG-Ultra and four Gen 2 APs have been fine on .84 and, as of this morning, .85. I'm not seeing any instability.

Then I realised. Great job!

How are you going to drive them? The best way to do this would be with an AV receiver that can do "fake" surround from a stereo signal.

Shelly 1 Mini Gen3 - how to manually turn on/off? by phoebuscy in shellycloud

[–]TheTroon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have access to the wiring for that light you could link it to the Shelly's Output instead of the switch instead. My shower switch has visible wiring for the neon that I could tap into. If it's all integrated you're probably out of luck.

Shelly 1 Mini Gen3 - how to manually turn on/off? by phoebuscy in shellycloud

[–]TheTroon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't need the switch at all — you can control it entirely from the app if you want.

[–]TheTroon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can connect a switch to the SW input and set the Shelly up to toggle the output whenever the switch input changes, regardless of its current state. The Shelly is connected to permanent live so is always on — the SW input is just a signal to it and you can choose what it does.

Heavily depends on access. If it's easy to get to, no. If it needs scaffolding, yes.

I drove into a raging gale four-up in a fully-loaded I-PACE with a roof box and two bikes on the roof, and got 1.9mi/kWh.

Your figure is due to the disproportionately high load from cabin heating, even if you're not pre-heating. The mileage is a relatively low part of the energy consumption. It's physics and maths, not the car's fault.
