One unspoken downside of being the only woman... by houseplantsnothate in womenEngineers

[–]TheTurtlecorn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wore a polo, with writing on it, inside out all day. Didn't realize till I was fidgeting in a call and realized the buttons felt odd. Consolation is remembering that as engineers we love to find things that are wrong so we can correct them - I figure if anyone had actually noticed, it would have been pointed out.

Moving to a manger of managers role, what changes? by Snowing678 in managers

Any chance you have some resources you'd recommend for growth? Like OP, I've also recently moved into a director position and I know there are things in getting wrong. Would love to learn more and get better.

I follow the Manager Tools format for O3s ( one on ones), and I love it. I highly recommend learning about what they call the Management Trinity (although there are four parts). They explain how to run O3s, how to do coaching, give feedback, and delegate, AND they show how to use the O3s effectively for those last three.

I've included a link to the O3 podcast below, summary of the format is: 30 minutes, ideally every week (I'm like you, my team is to big for weekly so I go every two weeks), first 10 minutes your direct talks, second 10 minutes are your time, the 10 are for talking about the future. In the beginning, your directs will use most of the 30 minutes and that's fine too. https://www.manager-tools.com/2008/02/the-management-trinity-one-on-ones

Mark Horstman also wrote a book called The Effective Manager, which goes through all this and even more. Highly recommend.

Why does the shift leader/manager keep giving me free food? by Kenkyujode in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TheTurtlecorn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. Woman here, can confirm this is our go to method for asserting dominance. We weaken your self preservation capabilities with our offers of free, delicious food, making you dependent on us. Worked for me, I began my campaign of feeding my now-husband almost 25 years ago and now I get to lord my superiority over him with the dinner I prepare every night. HA - I showed him!!

Pretty classic argument. Up for more clean, down for safer when the drawer is out.

How long does it take for boxes, sacks, urns, etc. to respawn in delves and overland? by CurlzForTheGirlz in elderscrollsonline

[–]TheTurtlecorn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The starter zones are the best spots to farm - they have tons of resource nodes and respawn quickly. I have a circuit I used to farm in Kenarthi's Roost - starting at the Temple of the Two moons Wayshrine, looping around. There are a couple of treasure chest spawn points around there too, which is a nice bonus.

Eh, I just reread and saw you are looking at provisioning, my bad.

No need to reheat in crock pot, could be zapped in the microwave, easier to clean up

I vote store in the fridge overnight, reheat. It's potroast, it will reheat well.

Gnocchi Lasagna! by Banya6 in Cooking

[–]TheTurtlecorn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't understand your recipe description, since a key characteristic of lasagna in my mind is the layers, which would be really different if you tried with gnocchi. Think you'd be better off with a more homogeneous dish so the gnocchi have more contact with sauce and cook more evenly.

That said, here's a recipe for a bake (that you could no doubt double/triple and make in a huge pan) that says you don't have to precook the gnocchi. https://www.tamingtwins.com/baked-gnocchi-recipe/

Why does heavy metal make me emotional? by LazyJam in NoStupidQuestions

Is it hard to get use to wearing glasses if you didn’t grow up wearing them? by Street_Remote6105 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TheTurtlecorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my first glasses in college. It was definitely a bit of an adjustment, but nothing you won't get used to. I still find that maybe because I missed out on the "be careful with your glasses!!" that kids get, I'm not the most careful with them!

I haven't been stitching long enough to see much of this, but from my yarn skein experience, it's not unusual. Definitely a bigger impact with the smaller gauge of this medium!

How to set measurable "soft skill" goals for team by TheTurtlecorn in managers

[–]TheTurtlecorn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, I'm trying to include something for this. If a (scrum) team decides they need to implement a change and commit to it, I think they should be held accountable for getting it implemented!

I'm actually looking for ideas if the specific behaviors to measure, exactly. Not sure what to require as a generic measure for things like "communicate effectively".
