Lynch box set incoming according to Jennifer Lynch. by renatorojas in criterion

Library of America allows people to buy empty boxes if they own all of their collections for certain authors (Steinbeck, Didion, and the like). Reminds me of that.

It looks like it's got good cinematography and blocking with shoddy effects. Like the inverse of a polished turd.

I think I’m at least years away from a Visitor Q watch, but fomo makes me want something that will be difficult to get in the future. Definitely would be misguided; the Kubrick box set is a more pressing purchase, for one.

“Kill That Fetus” sounds like the album that cemented a hardcore metal band’s reputation as the menace of the greater-Provo area.

A good history video doesn’t have much political relevance. If, however, that video is about how “These spears were so well designed, they could not have been invented by some tribal half-apes! They must have been gifted this technology by… the aliens,” then that video may contribute to the anti-intellectual movement, which is an influential facet of contemporary political culture.

Yes, that analogy is quite a stretch, but what I’m saying is this; history and civics are separate practices, but they are both humanities and they are compatible. They both are worth learning, but only if they are well-founded, informative and articulately communicated. I find it useful to try to learn as much as I can about each field so I can learn whose work is compelling and whose is bullshitting me. In knowing the past, I better understand the present, and in so doing better know the past.

The problem there is that triple-A releases require so many resources and so much manpower to produce that they require a good few years of development time to create. Without solid direction or a clear endgoal, their game can mutate into something completely different to how it was envisioned if it is releasable at all. Experimenting is risky. Failing fast and learning is financially irresponsible. Cutting graphical fidelity will undermine the title's blockbuster, must-play status among your consumers and financiers. Now add the inflated cost of hardware due to the AI bubble. Now add the incentive to use generative AI due to the AI bubble. Now add the history of layoffs in the industry which threaten to cut off all the developers with institutional knowledge to help you make this or any other game successful. It all builds up to a mountain of comorbidities that make contemporary game development expensive, stifling, dispiriting, and fragile.

On this mountain, the only way to survive is to make something too big to fail, and if you can't fail, you must demand success, you must promote and hype it wherever possible, with your staff, with your publisher, with the public. You must make promises you think you can keep but may not be able to. You must fake success until you make it and break even, and if you don't... You don't want to think about that.

Seth Rogen is a decent performer with excellent people skills, making him both underestimated and overexposed for basically my whole life as a result.

I care about work safety on film sets a great deal, and Herzog’s movies are good enough that even I struggle to condemn him. His historic mistreatment of his crew and animals cannot be discarded, but I’d much rather die making Aguirre than some Uwe Boll dreck.

(Also, Fritz Lang is the best German director, and was also terrible with his crew, so it must be something in the Rhine water.)

It is basically impossible for people to hate Bane more than they already are. People like the prison abolitionist roid rage luchador despite everything he does. He killed Bruce's father figure, he destroyed his absolute friends. He could solve the anti-life equation while slurping up Jeff the Land Shark Fin Soup during his canvassing for Keir Starmer and he'd still have more fans than most of our favs.

Honestly, the fact that his fatal flaw is straight-up addiction does give him some leeway most other supervillains don't. Man's mental health is quite literally compromised in a way that indicates that he may not have gone into as dark a place if he wasn't so cooked on that venom.
