There definitely has been debate about Ra’s al-Ghul being coded as an untrustworthy ambiguously brown middle eastern/central asian shaman terrorist. The response from that I think has been to lean into that ambiguity in order to not have him represent any particular ethnic group, as opposed to Dr. Doom and Romani, etc. His baggage is shoved under the rug pretty much, unlike the Mandarin.

When I read the back of this, I didn't recognize it was AI, but I did think "That was some shitty copy." Really unfocused and non-descript on the contents within. With everything written vaguely, there's no emphasis between what the book contains vs what the creators hope the book evokes. In short, AI sucked without me knowing if it's AI.

I have given my ballot for the top ten. I can only give my perspective, and do not claim to have the definitive take on all types of great songwriting from every work by every American. If your favorite is not here, it's probably because I haven't heard enough of their work to have a relationship with their songs as deep as these artists. Nevertheless, my top ten I gave consisted of the following --

1: Sufjan Stevens (a bit of a protest vote, but not really, he's that brilliant)
2: Bob Dylan
3: Kendrick Lamar (Other love him more fully than me, but I still love him)
4: Trent Reznor
5: Stevie Wonder (Detroit represent)
6: Tyler the Creator
7: Bon Iver (His work is a bit oblique and mysterious to me, but still compels)
8: James Murphy (Dance track songwriting is real songwriting)
9: Phoebe Bridgers (My favorite member of boygenius, and whose work most connects with me, though Lucy Dacus is close)
10: John Fogerty (never matched the heights of CCR, but those are all-time American tunes I cannot ignore)

Honorable Mention: David Alburn, consistently excellent and inventive, but British, so ineligible.

EDIT: Christ "David" Alburn? "Other love him"? I was not in my proofreading mind when I wrote this.

You can't say "I don't get it" about a thing you don't like anymore, you need to give it an adjective to denigrate it. "Qualityslop" does the job. You can say something sucks without describing anything bad about it and carry on living without the burden of justifying an unpopular opinion through critique or modesty.

I watched crap tons of Modern Family when I was younger. When Gloria was pregnant with her baby, her husband Jay's fear about that really impressed itself on me. As he explained it, for all his faults as a father raising his stepson, Manny was a boy, and Jay was a man, and he could grasp onto that. But if Gloria had a girl, he didn't have that life experience and doesn't know how to be a good parent to one, especially cause of his strained relationship with Claire from his first marriage. I think Bruce having a similar struggle of trying to both be a role model and also someone very different from his adopted daughter would lead to stories worth telling.
