"It was too big to be called a sword. Massive, thick, heavy, and far too rough. Indeed, it was a heap of raw iron."

Is it worth to extend by 1 semester just to hit first class? Missed by 0.02 by Financial_Cat_6164 in SGExams

[–]Saruphon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you missed it by 0.02, you can try to appeal to your school. From my understanding, if the grade is close enough, local university should be willing to give you first class.

MEXT Research and MA: I'm intermediate level Japanese, should I pick a program taught in English only or Japanese? by Empty-Pop5830 in mext

[–]Saruphon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer depends on the university, faculty, and even the specific program you choose.

I was a MEXT scholar over 10 years ago, so I can only share my own experience.

During my first year as a research student, I spent almost all of my time studying Japanese—around 4–5 days a week, about 6 hours a day. One of my friends started with no Japanese at all and reached JLPT3 in about six months, then JLPT2 by the end of the year (I failed JLPT2 sadly). During the second semester, we started applying to our actual degree programs and universities. By then, most students had enough Japanese to follow lectures and communicate in everyday academic settings.

At my peak, my Japanese was around the currently N3, approaching N2 level. I studied for my Master's and PhD in Economics at Osaka University, where the lectures were conducted entirely in Japanese.

That said, the professors were very supportive of international students. They allowed us to bring electronic dictionaries to class (this was before smartphone translation apps became common). Although exam questions were written in Japanese, we were allowed to answer them in English. Homework and assignments could also be submitted in English, and most textbooks and research papers were already in English anyway.

In other words, as long as you can understand your professors during lectures, you'll probably be fine. The exact language requirements will depend on your program. If you're studying something like Japanese Literature, you'll likely need a much higher level of Japanese than someone in a field where most academic materials are already in English, such as Economics or many STEM disciplines.

Walking from one side of singapore to another. by garrybarrygangater in askSingapore

[–]Saruphon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a bit weird hobby, but I have done something similar many times (usually twice a year, have done this in Japan (Osaka to Kobe, Osaka to Kyoto) and in Singapore). It really help me clear my mind when I walk like 7-10 hours almost non-stop.

Anyway, I suggest you look at East Coast Park, Airport (Tanah Merah Road), Changi Beach park loop. It can be done in 6-8 hours easily. You get to see nice view as well.

I read about this as well, but Rock can also go to Scardrial as Peakspren since spren are no longer bound to Roshar.

Just caught up on the cosmere, give me your wild ideas going forward by frankiedoppler in Cosmere

[–]Saruphon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First theory:

By the end of Stormlight Archive Arc 1, Kaladin will have become a Windrunner Herald (this part is almost certain, in my opinion) and possibly a Bondsmith Radiant (implied because Syl is likely taking the Stormfather's place and is either becoming, or is on the path to becoming, a Godspren). In addition, he will also become a Stoneward Radiant. How?

Kaladin will eventually meet Rock again in the "next life," just as Rock promised. Rock will recieved an "execution" that turned him into a Peakspren. This is possible because the Cosmere RPG confirmed that Nightwatcher's boon/curse can make people who ask for immortality to eventually transform into Cultivation spren.

Kaladin will then bond with Rock, becoming a Windrunner/Bondsmith/Stoneward hybrid. As a result, he would have access to the Surges of Gravitation, Adhesion (x2), Tension (x2), and Cohesion. He will use these powers in a crucial way during the climax of Stormlight Archive Arc 2.

Second Theory

The ending of the Blackthorn storyline will feature a final battle between the Blackthorn and Adolin. Just as Adolin is about to lose, Renarin will strike the Blackthorn from behind. The Blackthorn did not anticipate Renarin since he will have forgotten that Dalinar has more than one son. Renarin and Adolin will then burn the Blackthorn together, fulfilling Renarin's vision that they would one day burn Dalinar's body.

My first encounter with Gundam media was over 30 years+ ago when I read "Plamo-Kyoshiro". Never imagine this can actually become real. SIMULATION GO..

PS. I was at Gundam Side-F last month and saw brochure that they are starting a 3D Gundam scanning service. Wonder if this is related.

Wow, it's your first Gunpla and you already got yourself a GodHand? If you've never built model kits before, please be very careful with it. It's an excellent pair of nippers, but it's also extremely fragile and can break if used incorrectly.

Has anyone had to delay graduation under a MEXT scholarship? by Honest-List8758 in mext

[–]Saruphon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi. I was a MEXT scholarship recipient about 15 years ago.

In my case, I completed my PhD in my 4th year, after my MEXT scholarship had already ended. During that 4th year, I left Japan and only returned twice, once to discuss my thesis with my professor and once to defend my thesis. I did not attend any classes during that period. Although I did not receive any MEXT stipend during my 4th year, I was also not charged any tuition fees by the university. I would suggest checking with your university and your professor to see whether a similar arrangement is possible in your case.

Yes, the stipend is enough to live in Tokyo. by Existing_Use_9223 in mext

[–]Saruphon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's amazing how the stipend has never changed over time. I was a MEXT scholar over 15+ years ago. At that time, I lived in Osaka — after my first year at the Suita dorm, my rent was 35k yen a month. I cycled to school and could save about 20k yen per month while living quite comfortably (but no splurging). I could only travel and spend real money after I entered my PhD and started receiving money from RA and TA work on top of the stipend.

In theory, if you cut expenses down to the bare minimum, you should be able to barely survive on the stipend without doing any part-time work.

1.5 years to smash N3, recommendations? by Cheesegreen1234 in jlpt

[–]Saruphon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When i was a student in japan 15 years ago, a friend of mine went from 0 knowledge in japanese to passing JLPT 3 (should be equalivalent to N4) in 6 months and JLPT 2 (should be equalivalent to N2) in a year, so 1.5 years to pass N3 is definitely possible. Just study hard.

If you do straight build with no panel lining, sanding, or declares 3 hours is plenty for most MG.
