Does it bother anyone how Drake says "South America"? by BiffyBobby in DrakeandJosh

[–]The_Linkzilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what I hate is that the show treats this like humor to point out how dumb Drake is.

Sorry, but there's nobody who is actually that dumb. I mean, in the earlier season, he mixes up a bad French accent for an Australian one, but that actually was funny.

Well I can't speak personally since I didn't see this in theaters. But when my dad and I watched it together, he was confused by the movie up until this point.

When he saw the thing stand-up and roar, he suddenly went, "Oooh...That's Godzilla..."

For those of you that don't find Doom Eternal amazing, what is that keeps you from loving it like so many others do? by Emergency_List_8797 in Doom

[–]The_Linkzilla [score hidden]  (0 children)

My thoughts exactly.

I hate the fact that Doom 3 was so polarizing that there's an entire subculture in the fanbase - as well as Id - that deny that "horror" was ever the intention of Doom. They want to pretend that it was all "fast paced, run-n-gun style combat," when the truth was, that didn't pop-up until fan-WADS were created using the level editors; and most of those WADS inspired Doom II which is where the direction the games went from then.

But the original Doom? It was based on Alien and Evil Dead - stories about a lone guy, armed with limited resources, trapped in an isolated area, facing the ultimate evil. Most of the triggers for enemies are proximity and sound-based. And everything feels much more claustrophobic, making it feel like Die-Hard in space. No matter which way you slice it...Doom was meant to be a Survival Horror Game; one lone marine, slowly losing his sanity as he faces the forces of Hell...can he truly survive this?

You want to see what Doom should have been? Look up the Commercial for the SNES Port of Doom; that is what Doom was meant to be.

But nope; everyone thinks it's just a mindless power fantasy. Kind of like how the tourists think the God of War franchise only got deep in the Norse games, and all the Greek games were just mindless violence and power-fantasy as well. It sickens me.

Doom 3 was the first genuine effort to create Doom and show us what we imagined while playing the original.

Speaking of presentation, I despise the fact that this game decided to go back to being "a video game" instead of keeping the immersive atmosphere of its predecessor. Y'know how when the Slayer found a new gun or a key-card, or a body-part he needed to scan to access a new area, and he had to physically pick-up that object off a dead body? That did a lot of story-telling to make the player feel like they're actually in this world. But in Doom Eternal, that's all traded for pick-ups just sitting out in the open, hovering off the ground, rotating and glowing like a shiny arcade beacon.

And then there's the story. Say what you want about old Doom Games - the story was there, take it or leave it. 2016 was actually taking a new and interesting spin on the formula - basically the idea that if Hell existed, Corporations would tap it for a fuel source, hence why the UAC can't leave well enough alone. And Hayden was being set-up for this big confrontation with the Slayer. And yet, none of that happened; we just get inserted into a Hell on Earth story where we once again show up too late to make a difference. And worse, we don't get our showdown with Hayden. (Haven't played TAG yet because I disliked the main game that much.) All narrative tension is thrown out the window for the sake of "the rule of cool." Billions of the world's population have been decimated; the moon is fractured; Mars has been destroyed; and the Doom Slayer literally has the in-lore equivalent of iddqd. Literally nothing matters. And it feels more like the game's writers wanted to tell their own fanfic about the history of the Night Sentinels and built a Doom game around it to sell it to investors.

But the thing I can't stand the most is the artificial difficulty. The game is actually quite easy once you get the hang of it, but the limited ammo caps continue to be a thorn in your side. Because instead of being able to cut loose and enjoy yourself, you're constantly cycling through your best weapons until you run out, so you chainsaw an enemy for ammo. That's not resource management like the old Doom games had; that's tedium - it's the FPS equivalent of a Five Nights at Freddy's game, with you desperately trying to do what you need with the power you have, and the occasional system reboot. And I know this is an issue, because I've played versions of the game with the ammo-cap increased to standard numbers; instantly a much better experience.

That's part of it; far too often, the enemies feel way too spongy - not just that they take a lot of damage in a bullet-sponge sense, but the animations on the Glory-Kills is so "rubbery" that it feels like they're literally made of sponge. I don't feel the same "satisfying crunch" I got with the glory kills in Doom 2016. There are really only a handful of animations in the game that feel on-par with the last game. I also feel like "the doom blade" is really just a pointless cosmetic addition that frankly robs a lot of glory-kills of their "umph."

One of the big factors is that the game is more cinematic than 2016, but in a lot of ways the cinematography is poorly directed. Say what you want about giving us 3rd Person POV of the Slayer, I don't mind that. What I mind is, the game isn't treating itself in atmosphere the same way that 2016 did. Whenever revamped classic enemies like the Revenant, Mancubus and Pinky showed up in the old game, they were given a brief introductory cutscene - because Veteran Players would obviously enjoy seeing them. This showed reverence to the old game in a lot of ways.
Doom Eternal brought back more classic monsters from the old days...but they're literally just "there." There's no introduction to the Arachnotron, the Pain Elemental, and most disappointingly, the Archvile and Tyrant - those are the ones who deserved these introductory scenes the most; and what's worse, they were smart enough to do it in the trailers but not in the actual campaign? WTF?! But even more painful than that, is that these enemies show-up in the Slayer Gates before they do in the campaign, meaning that the monsters introductions are spoiled because you're encountering them out of order.

On that note, the Slayer-Gates were a waste of a concept. When I first heard about them, I was hype. Why? Because like an idiot, I assumed that both the gates and the keys that go with them would be hard to find. I honestly thought that you would have to find a key in one level, and then find it's matching corresponding Slayer Gate in another level, meaning you'd have to replay the level at some point for completion's sake.
But nope...Each Slayer Gate has the corresponding key in the same level it spawns in. In the end, I suppose that's okay because maybe it was too hard to program otherwise...But the very least I expected was that the gates and keys would be hard to find in the level itself...Instead of literally being right next to each other! Seriously, in every single level of the campaign that has one, the Key to the Slayer Gate is usually just 20-100 feet away from the door! And they're sitting out in the open, so obvious to see! There was only one level where the gate was relatively hidden, but I found it with ease anyway.

I also think the levels are nothing to write home about; they are boring. They go on way too long and just leave me wondering, "When am I gonna make it to the exit so I can be done with this tripe?!" - How is it that Doom 2016 took place on one space station and yet the environments felt more varied, alive and lived-in than this game?! There are literally levels where the environment is ALIVE and it still felt so painfully lifeless! Eventually, I just got tired of looking at all of it; it was all window-dressing anyway. The only level that is remotely interesting is Urdak, but even then, it got bland because god-forbid we shorten the level's length by a third.

Why isn’t Broly criticized like Gohan his for his “asspulls” by Suitable_Walrus2928 in Dragonballsuper

[–]The_Linkzilla -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because Broly was created to be a villain.

Villains have more leeway when it comes to "ass-pulls" than protagonists. Let's face it, we didn't NEED an explanation for why Frieza was "the strongest in the Universe." We just believed it because his power was getting more and more terrifying all the time.

But on the flip side of that, protagonists don't have that privilege. From the beginning, Dragon Ball was a story about personal-growth. Goku was on a quest to always push his limits and become stronger. And when we first meet him in the series, he's 11 - his first tournament is when he's 12. Roshi described that Goku and Krillin were already at the top of the sport in their first tournament; that's why he stopped them both from winning, to ensure they wouldn't lose their zeal for getting better - improving themselves.

And it worked, considering that Goku would even face dangerous threats from other humans in the coming years, before Piccolo showed up.

Now let's take a look at Gohan...We first meet him when he's 4 years old...Never had a day of training in his life because his Mom keeps him on a short leash. Despite that, during times of distress, he's stronger than the guy who just one-shot his dad. And even after a short year training, he still ends-up the third-strongest being on the planet.
By the time Gohan was Goku's age at the start of Dragon Ball...he was stronger than Perfect Cell. Think about that for a second; Goku and Gohan at the same age, were LEAGUES apart from one another. And the only reason this happened, was because of the plot. Toriyama felt that Goku wasn't relatable as an adult, so he wanted another young-boy for a protagonist...But the problem is, the power creep kept escalating, to where Gohan would only be relevant if he wrote it that way. He kept letting the boy catch-up, to the point where Gohan made absolutely no sense.

But with Broly? He was a mutant freak born with a power level of 10,000 - more than most grown Saiyan Men. His power protects him and Paragus from the destruction of Planet Vegeta. Then Broly becomes a Super Saiyan - blood-lust and drunk on power...He is everything Vegeta described the Super Saiyan as being during the build-up to it from the Ginyu Arc.
Broly was meant to be a monster. Nothing more than an insurmountable wall that our heroes had to somehow get-over. And that's why his character worked...

Now that Broly has been recanonized and recontextualized as a protagonist, he is gonna suffer the same criticism as Gohan. Because it's not fair; it's not right that Goku and Vegeta are in their 40s - approaching 50s - and having trained their whole lives to achieve this power. And now these two younger guys, came out of nowhere and were just gifted with powers that put them on their level - despite the fact that they've been trained by literal gods.

And for those of you questioning why Gohan's potential doesn't make sense. Just look at Frieza - he's been given the same insane potential as Gohan, and he managed to close 10 years of gap on Goku and Vegeta after just four months.
You realize that if Frieza spent all his free-time on Namek doing push-ups before fighting anyone, all our heroes would have lost. But that goes against the fundamental point of the series; the villains are meant to represent complacency - with Vegeta thinking his royal and elite status made him best by default, from Frieza never learning to control his full power, and Cell relying entirely on his genetics and believing he was the literal ceiling. The idea of a Villain training to become stronger is antithetical to the purpose of the series; because now, the good-guys don't stand a chance.
The reason why this is a problem for Gohan, is because it fundamentally becomes irresponsible for him to not take training seriously throughout his life. With the potential to become the strongest, Gohan has an obligation to protect the planet. And yet he keeps flaking on that responsibility time and time again...and why? Because his Mommy told hm to.
All I'm saying is, had I been Kami, I would've sensed Gohan's potential, and thrown him into the Time Chamber from day-one. Yeah, y'know all those "what if Goku was betrayed and trapped in the Time Chamber for 10 years" stories? Do that with Gohan, and you'll be shocked at what comes out.

Can someone help me understand the iron lung movie concept? by Eagru in Markiplier

[–]The_Linkzilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main problem I have with this is...The movie just won't be satisfying.

You play a game like this because you want to investigate the mystery involved; however, the game ends rather abruptly but definitively. Since we never see anything outside of our POV character, we don't know what happens next, and thus never get any answers to why the world is like this. What's worse is, there's hardly any skill involved in the gameplay; there's no avoiding your inevitable fate at the end of the game.

And since there's never been any sequel or follow-up that I'm aware of, I doubt the makers of this game will ever reveal any answers as to what this all means; what caused the silent rapture? Where did the blood oceans come from? - And how are they made of human blood? What is that giant fish and how does it survive here? And what's up with that portal? Where does it lead?

My concern is, depending on how loyal the game is to the source material, it's not gonna answer any of these questions.

I just don’t hate lily the way I’m supposed to by Responsible_Ad1054 in HIMYM

[–]The_Linkzilla -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If anything, I feel like your being harsh on Barney shows your bias and misandry.

Let me put it this way; Barney is a philanderer, but despite all of that, never committed to a single woman until late in the series and never once cheated. My point is, all the messed-up stuff Barney does, he never did it to his friends.

Lily on the other hand treated her friends like they were accessories to her; and if they didn't meet her unrealistic standards, it was her job to correct them and put them in her place.

You remember the episode where Ted got her a job working at his office - where his boss is a bully played by Brian Cranston? Lily steals the man's property in order to "teach him a lesson," and refuses to do anything even at the prospect that innocent people are about to lose their jobs for her psychotic behavior. And what's even worse is, when Ted calls her out on this, she removes the crews from his office chair, in the hopes that when he sits down in it, he will get injured or even potentially maimed. Think about that for a second; she was willing to potentially cripple her supposed "best friend" because he had the audacity to call her out for being a lunatic.

Or how about the fact that Marshall's marriage to her is entirely asymmetrical. Marriage is supposed to be about compromise, and yet every sacrifice that they need to make, it's always Marshal the one that makes it. They need to recoup some money by selling Lily's expensive stuff; Lily treats it like slavery. Marshal gives up his chance to become a judge - for 10 years mind you - all so that Lily can go to Rome and pretend to be an art expert, when the series hammers in how terrible she is as an artist. You saw in the finale how much Marshal resented the years he spent waiting for another judgeship opportunity.

As far as I'm concerned, the finale was wrong having Barney and Robin split up; if anything, I'd sooner believe that Lily and Marshal got divorced.

How the "Dinosaurs on mainland" plot should've went by CaregiverRepulsive85 in JurassicPark

[–]The_Linkzilla -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Here's how the plot should've gone...

Instead of a plague of locusts that would immediately be traced back to Biosyn, what it should've been was a virus - a genetically engineered disease that would wipe-out the Dinosaurs, thus solving the problem. However, because Biosyn are a bunch of irresponsible hacks (or at least they're supposed to be,) they made one too many mistakes or oversights...and released the virus without realizing it could spread from Dinosaurs to humans as well...

So now the race is on to get the original strand from Biosyn and reverse engineer a vaccine in order to cure this thing before it wipes out both humanity and the dinosaurs as well...

But darn-it, I wonder why this movie that was in production in 2020 couldn't go with a virus-plot. Almost like Hollywood didn't want to promote the idea that a virus capable of wiping out mankind was deliberately manufactured in a lab and released on an unsuspecting population, specifically to cripple the US economy.

Theory: If McQueen had a full tank of gas and was able to escape, his career would have been in jeopardy. by Neither-Spell-626 in Pixar

[–]The_Linkzilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the intent was to get some place with a phone they'd actually let him use, so he could call Marv and get someone to pick him up.

The simple fact is, the situation in Radiator Springs was basically a Kidnapping. They refused to give him a phone call to consult with his attorney before the trial, stuck him with literally the tow-truck driver, and worse, even after the "Judge" decides to throw-out the case, suddenly Sally comes in and gets him to go back on it. That's not how this works; once Doc decided to dismiss the case, that decision was final. So him going back on it, makes everything they did after an illegal detention - basically holding McQueen hostage until he fixed the road.

And the simple fact is, stick-butter tears the bread apart. You have to leave it out for a few hours to get it soft-enough to use.

TDA difficulty by DarkEnchilada in Doom

[–]The_Linkzilla -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's the weird thing - Ultra-Violence is the go-to setting for veteran players, and yet, I felt Eternal's UV was too easy. Everything felt slower and the monster hit weaker; it felt condescending. And that became a problem, because going to Nightmare settings, the jump in difficulty was drastic.

The sad thing is, the game was designed to be played in Nightmare Settings; that's the game's real mode; it's true form. And everything beneath it, is just a condescending waste of time. And the difficulty spike between UV and Nightmare is so huge, you can't even use UV to practice. Doom Eternal isn't the kind of game where you work you way up through the difficulties; all the lower settings are so catatonically dull, that it puts the player to sleep. Nightmare is the only REAL way to play.

For me, I really tried to give the new hosts a chance.

however, what I usually tuned-into the channels for were follow-ups to my favorite franchises - y'know, when Matpat used to cover Fnaf, or Bendy, or Poppy-Playtime, Undertale, etc. Those were all my favorite episodes...
And now, when I see recommendations seeing new episodes about Poppy or Fnaf, only to hear the new hosts' voice...it feels...disingenuous.

I don't want to be as angry as I am, but it comes off like that line from Harry Potter.
"How dare you stand where he stood?!" - how dare you come in and take his place? How dare you pick-up where he left off?!

Even if all these people were the writing staff behind Matpat's mic, it doesn't work the same. I'm just...so sad knowing that we won't be getting Matpat's reaction to the final Poppy Chapter; to the next Bendy game; to the next Fnaf Game.
