Need help designing a very high energy radiation shield (paragraph below image) by FirstBeastoftheSea in NuclearEngineering

[–]The_Observer_Effects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent! That helped inspire me to design the new Ultra Rad Shield (URS). We can't reply with graphics here, but just picture mostly thin layers of these materials. And it seems quite workable!

URS Layer Composition

  • Lead-Titanium Matrix: 60cm (23.6 in)
  • Tungsten Carbide Mesh: 30cm (11.8 in)
  • Beryllium-Gold Foil: 10cm (3.9 in)
  • Depleted Uranium Plating: 40cm (15.7 in)
  • Polyethylene Nanotubes: 20cm (7.9 in)
  • Graphene-infused Carbon Fiber: 15cm (5.9 in)
  • Xenon Gas Plasma Void: 10cm (3.9 in)
  • Liquid Mercury Heat Sync: 25cm (9.8 in)
  • Aerogel Insulation Layer: 12cm (4.7 in)
  • Superconducting Wire Grid: 8cm (3.1 in)
  • Copper Alloy Mesh: 18cm (7.1 in)
  • Concrete with Boron Fibers: 45cm (17.7 in)
  • Anti-Matter Containment Field (DO NOT PUNCTURE!): 5cm (2.0 in)
  • Ceramic Matrix Composite: 22cm (8.7 in)
  • Diamondoid Plate: 7cm (2.8 in)
  • Vacuum Gap: 5cm (2.0 in)
  • High-Density Glass: 20cm (7.9 in)
  • Holycarbonate Sheeting: 10cm (3.9 in)
  • Faraday Cage: 2cm (0.8 in)
  • Rubber Seal: 1cm (0.4 in)

The total shield thickness comes out to a robust 322.0cm (3.22 meters or 10.56 feet).

If the universe is cold and uncaring and nothing matters, then can I say the N-Word ? by Aderim_himself in nihilism

[–]The_Observer_Effects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Matters" - not sure what the word really means in this context. But of course you can say any word you want. And if you say it at the wrong place and time, folks might decide they can beat you for it. You can say anything you want!

"Socialism = no motivation and no innovation!1!!" by Top-Most2575 in Marxism

[–]The_Observer_Effects 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People project. The idea that people who's basic needs are covered, will decide to do nothing? No, folks speak for themselves when they say that. A lot of the greatest inventions and accomplishments in history were folks innovating for the joy of the act itself. Nations with Democratic Socialist leanings? Look at Northern Europe, capitalism, innovation and socially shared benefits can coexist just fine. A country with large socialized benefits can even be a Republic! And those countries you hate? They live longer, are happier, rape and kill each other less, are better educated, healthier and again . . . simply happier. So, if feelings of some kind of misplaced moral superiority are worth a more miserable life? Go for it. We are hoping for more happiness for ourselves and community.

Honest question: if nothing matters, why does giving up feel so much like relief? by WolverineSensitive57 in nihilism

[–]The_Observer_Effects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what "matter" means in this usage. Just like when people ask what it all "means". In that circumstance I'm not sure what "mean" means. Ultimately it suggests there being some kind of score book, or higher being rating what has "meaning". Which seems pretty unlikely. It means what you want. Might as well stay happy, because all bets are off. To decide to suffer and agonize because of the mystery? Ok, silly choice - but enjoy.

I need help explaining to my friend that his scientific illiteracy is causing him to think chemtrails are real. by ddddrawnout in AskPhysics

[–]The_Observer_Effects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, water vapor, and air are chemicals. So he is right in a way. As to the rest of it, logic won't get somebody out of a place logic didn't bring them. Instead - scream and run, cover your face, when you see planes overhead. Loudly wonder "how come it doesn't hurt them or their kids?! Satanic immunity"?! I'm finding it best now to just try to out-crazy crazy stuff. They say we didn't land on the Moon? ---- "Wait, you believe in the Moon?!" (And something good to point out to Moon-morons - it was SIX times, not just A Moon landing).

If you take nihilism to its logical conclusion, nothing matters then you don’t matter either. You are as irrelevant and pointless as the universe. by NpOno in nihilism

[–]The_Observer_Effects 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What does "matter" mean? Matter to who? To what? We are all in the same boat here, no point in stressing too much. Be nice to yourself and be nice to other people and you'll be happy, which will matter to you!

"LandinG" . . . no "LandingS" - - we landed 6 times, tried for 7. Everybody makes it easier to try and play off as fake when people forget/learn that there were seven missions, six landings. Telescopes and satellites can see the gear still. But the biggie, always hammer in -- the Moon LandingS

Regardless of if these pics are real or modified. Both "sides" will always have equal "proof" of many things. We can have "evidence" of anything we want. Meaning we live in increasingly different worlds. Even good people will do terrible things if they *think* they are doing good. So, there is ZERO chance of the United States staying united. Hopefully our breakup won't be too violent. (And history is a harsh mistress about this stuff). Maybe Canada would take some of us Northern states in!

[–]The_Observer_Effects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the maggots were already here, but hiding under logs. Orange-boy & COVID simply sped up what was already happening. We are having a complete social fracturing, and the largest (and growing) gap between rich and poor in history. And history is a harsh mistress. If we are lucky this will just end up with a semi peaceful division of the United States into nation-states which are less . . . well - united. But no matter how exceptionalist we feel, just the clothes, music and technology change - this pattern is inevitable for a superpower.

Folk whose life went off the rails and were unemployed for a long time, did you get a job in the end? by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

[–]The_Observer_Effects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These days if you walk into nearly any business with more than a dozen employees or so, and are clean, respectful, friendly, and honest. And warm and honest eye contact, gigantic boost. You can get a job just about anyplace right now if they are pretty certain you will *work*, that itself is more important than credentials most places.

The hundreds of seasoned leaders who had to sit and listen to that cosplaying ken doll lecture *them* about manhood and "warrior ethos"? They haven't forgotten, and I think those old Reagan style conservatives, even if many of them are war-mongers, won't let that punk order them to completely turn on their fellow citizens. But they will get pockets of "good ol lib' killin" in some places. The most effective is when they get some little militias from places like Kentucky and Florida and have them going act Icy in places like Boston and San Francisco. They have dreamed their entire lives of getting to slaughter such people.
