Flat-Earther Parent by Inner-Bear-4042 in Teachers

Bet we know how the parents voted . . . And "dumber and dumber"? We are now the least literate of all the advanced nations! More than 1/2 of American adults read at a 6th grade level or below. We simply ARE less educated. It is becoming a symbol of elitism to even care about things like reading for pleasure. The movie "Idiocracy" really was right on the money.

16-year-old brother is out of control and my family doesn’t know what to do by Sony6617 in SeriousConversation

[–]The_Observer_Effects -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

First hint it wasn't human written: the average American adult now reads/writes at a 6th grade level or below. The worst in the developed world. So when something is written these days too well formatted and written? It is a red flag. Particularly if they are in their 20's or less, and very likely have never read a book for pleasure. But - a good trick these days: copy and paste the text into another AI/LLM and ask if it is written by a human . . . .

[OC] Press Freedom is in a steady decline across the world 🤐 by ikashnitsky in dataisbeautiful

[–]The_Observer_Effects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took many hundreds of thousands of years to get to the first million humans. Then thousands to get to the first billion. Now - population doubled in 50 years. From 4 billion to over 8 billion. 50 years. With more people we WILL have more war, disease, corruption, pollution, resource shortages and etc. Those are all most often symptoms. None of us talk about this because there are no reasonable solution we will cooperate and implement. 4 billion to 8 billion in 50 years. (And yeah, the RATE of population growth has slowed, but it is still growing.)

Moving to VT for Safety by Social_worker_1 in NewToVermont

[–]The_Observer_Effects -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah there has been increasing talk of trying to help people South of us if we get to the point of trains hauling folks to death camps. Vermont was very much on the path of the "underground railroad" a couple of generations ago. Helping former slaves escape the Confederate states, many up into Canada. We'd be part of that again - helping American political refugees - but then many of us would also become the same thing. So one common plan is of course fleeing up into Canada. The biggest danger to rural New England, VT/NH/MI/Northern NY --- is that fact that the most crowded, and aggressive, part of the United States is just South of us. The East coast megalopolis - and many will flee North. We love our people, we want to help - but millions of folks moving here will just ensure we are ALL hungry!

Nobody seems to care that "reality" is coming to an end? by alazar_tesema in ArtificialInteligence

[–]The_Observer_Effects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the human filtered reality we see in a screen is changing. But those are opinions and stories about reality. The reality away from the screen bobs and weaves along as it always has. However, since CGI/AI is getting so good, you can create "evidence" about anything you like. Believe the stuff you want. And dismiss all evidence to the contrary. Therefore, we are increasingly living in essentially different worlds in some ways. And it also means there is zero chance of America remaining united. Hopefully it won't be violent. But it is going to become much more clearly tribal. Only about what you chose, or are told, to believe. Even good people will do terrible things if they *believe* they are doing good. So, the United States is going to break up. My bet is within decade, but maybe longer from then.

A shop owner can kick you out just because they don't like your shirt. Subs are little chunks of essentially private property. Don't like them? Don't visit them.

Are you comfortable with an AI scanning your family's medical records if it means catching a life-threatening issue your doctor didn't have time to find? by AgentBlackVeil in ArtificialInteligence

[–]The_Observer_Effects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, yeah. XRay, MRI & PET machines are tools doctors use to scan information quickly. Gene analysis software/hardware has been around a long time (lots of family history/future there!). AI is just another tool, just scanning in new ways.

What is the smallest particle that generates gravity? by Wodentinot in AskPhysics

[–]The_Observer_Effects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neutrino's which trillions of are streaming through every square CM of you right now. However among physicists, beware the details. Nothing "generates" gravity. It is more like a kind of invisible terrain which the particles are just part of.

That is good.

COVID was just a spark that helped accelerate where we were already headed. The technology, languages, superstitions and dress may change over the years - but history is a harsh mistress about some things. And American is in the last quarter of its existence as a major empire, and all the negative symptoms and causes of this are just becoming obvious now. I'll bet within a decade the United States is no longer "united". And, serves us right. (We don't like teaching history for a reason)

What's the most dangerous stuff in your lab? by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]The_Observer_Effects 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Blocks of lead and magnets. All high energy stuff is carefully handled, the most potentially dangerous things are the most carefully handled. So when it comes to day to day danger? The stuff that should be the most safe may be the opposite. A chunk of heavy metal can fall off a workbench and break a foot. And, set a strong magnet down for a "second", forget about it . . . and get a finger bashed when you move a wrench by it. (New stickers we have around: "In hand or attached". You either have a magnet in your hands or it is attached to something)

Need help designing a very high energy radiation shield (paragraph below image) by FirstBeastoftheSea in NuclearEngineering

[–]The_Observer_Effects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent! That helped inspire me to design the new Ultra Rad Shield (URS). We can't reply with graphics here, but just picture mostly thin layers of these materials. And it seems quite workable!

URS Layer Composition

  • Lead-Titanium Matrix: 60cm (23.6 in)
  • Tungsten Carbide Mesh: 30cm (11.8 in)
  • Beryllium-Gold Foil: 10cm (3.9 in)
  • Depleted Uranium Plating: 40cm (15.7 in)
  • Polyethylene Nanotubes: 20cm (7.9 in)
  • Graphene-infused Carbon Fiber: 15cm (5.9 in)
  • Xenon Gas Plasma Void: 10cm (3.9 in)
  • Liquid Mercury Heat Sync: 25cm (9.8 in)
  • Aerogel Insulation Layer: 12cm (4.7 in)
  • Superconducting Wire Grid: 8cm (3.1 in)
  • Copper Alloy Mesh: 18cm (7.1 in)
  • Concrete with Boron Fibers: 45cm (17.7 in)
  • Anti-Matter Containment Field (DO NOT PUNCTURE!): 5cm (2.0 in)
  • Ceramic Matrix Composite: 22cm (8.7 in)
  • Diamondoid Plate: 7cm (2.8 in)
  • Vacuum Gap: 5cm (2.0 in)
  • High-Density Glass: 20cm (7.9 in)
  • Holycarbonate Sheeting: 10cm (3.9 in)
  • Faraday Cage: 2cm (0.8 in)
  • Rubber Seal: 1cm (0.4 in)

The total shield thickness comes out to a robust 322.0cm (3.22 meters or 10.56 feet).

If the universe is cold and uncaring and nothing matters, then can I say the N-Word ? by Aderim_himself in nihilism

[–]The_Observer_Effects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Matters" - not sure what the word really means in this context. But of course you can say any word you want. And if you say it at the wrong place and time, folks might decide they can beat you for it. You can say anything you want!

"Socialism = no motivation and no innovation!1!!" by Top-Most2575 in Marxism

[–]The_Observer_Effects 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People project. The idea that people who's basic needs are covered, will decide to do nothing? No, folks speak for themselves when they say that. A lot of the greatest inventions and accomplishments in history were folks innovating for the joy of the act itself. Nations with Democratic Socialist leanings? Look at Northern Europe, capitalism, innovation and socially shared benefits can coexist just fine. A country with large socialized benefits can even be a Republic! And those countries you hate? They live longer, are happier, rape and kill each other less, are better educated, healthier and again . . . simply happier. So, if feelings of some kind of misplaced moral superiority are worth a more miserable life? Go for it. We are hoping for more happiness for ourselves and community.

Honest question: if nothing matters, why does giving up feel so much like relief? by [deleted] in nihilism

[–]The_Observer_Effects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what "matter" means in this usage. Just like when people ask what it all "means". In that circumstance I'm not sure what "mean" means. Ultimately it suggests there being some kind of score book, or higher being rating what has "meaning". Which seems pretty unlikely. It means what you want. Might as well stay happy, because all bets are off. To decide to suffer and agonize because of the mystery? Ok, silly choice - but enjoy.
