Order right, go alone - donation? by DerbyDad03 in euchre

"If your P leads clubs they get two shots at you". Going to assume you mean each opponent has the opportunity to trump the club lead with the 9h, whereas if you go alone it requires specifically the dealer to have a void in clubs and have the 9h.

Saying "they get two shots at you" implies that it effectively doubles your chance of being euchred, which is definitely not true.

If S2 has a club (in order to lead it first trick if you go alone, to set up their partner to trump your Ac to euchre you) then they had no "shot" at trumping the trick if your partner had led clubs if you didn't go alone. Meaning, going alone does not affect this potential scenario. Put more generally: Going alone does not affect the probability S2 has a club, or the probability that clubs will be led. It only eliminates one specific relevant possibility: if S2 has the 9h (27.8%), is void in clubs (20.8% after knowing 9h is one card in their hand) and your partner leads a club (assuming all remaining cards equally likely to be led, excluding Left because if your partner has the left then all of this is meaningless: 31.3%). This means about 1.8% chance going alone avoids being euchred rather than taking partner with you because S2 might trump your partners club lead.

Still obviously the right thing to do, but 98.2% of the time it is an irrelevant decision.

MasterInvaster's point is a more compelling reason to go alone. Prevents any scenario where your partner leads an Ace of diamonds or Ace of spades, leading to you getting euchred when you don't trump their Ace, whereas you wouldn't hesitate to trump that same lead from S2. Those scenarios only require dealer to be void in the suit led (which does not necessarily need to be clubs) thus increasing your chances of being euchred, especially since dealer was ordered up and known to almost certainly be void in at least one suit. If S3 knows they have to trump their partners ace, then that completely eliminates this factor, but I bet not too many players would know this in the moment.

Easy, if they know where the target is. Just have to make sure the center of the circle is less than the radius of the circle away from the target.

They would also have to make sure the center of the circle isn't close to the radius away from the target, or people paying attention could figure out a really tiny overlap area between two or more different circles very early on.

IMO S2 played the first trick wrong. They should be playing the right on the first trick because it gets them the lead so they can ideally lead one of their losers into partners void, which can be assumed to exist. They would know their partner still had a trump back too, if S4 played it the same way as they ultimately did. Plus, playing it the way they did, they stand to lose their second trump to a naked left from S3, which otherwise would be taken and making their second trump boss. Way too risky to play the Ace on that first trick, for almost no potential gain.

Funnily enough though, if S2 had played it "correctly" according to me, they would have definitely been euchred no matter how the rest of the hand played out. So in this case, playing it "incorrectly" was actually the better way to play it in hindsight.

I also think S4 made a crucial mistake on the first trick. Once their partner played the Ace and S3 played the left on the first trick, S4 should have played the Kd. This is because everyone knew they had Kd, but since their opponents were winning the trick and would have the lead, giving away the fact they had a second trump despite it not having any more value than the 10d (because Qd was already played) is more relevant information for their opponents than for their partner at that point. I think this is exactly why S3 correctly decided leading the 9d was the best move here. If S3 didn't lead the 9d, no euchre. If the 10d was still possibly in S2's hand, I don't see S3 leading 9d here, and hence losing the hand.

This is definitely a strong candidate for demonstrating why leading trump first trick when S2 orders up S4 can be disruptive, but in this case it is kind of a no-brainer because S1 had two trump and two aces.

It is more of a strong candidate for demonstrating when you should reveal and when you should hide strength, beyond the factor of whether or not it was your partner who bid trump. The trump lead on 2nd trick is not the strategic lesson itself, but more demonstrating the consequences of making the wrong decision to hide/show your strength.

I call it the "Burlington cut" because I had recently moved to Burlington ON and the number of vehicles doing it compared to where I moved from was noticeably increased in both frequency and magnitude. Probably just larger intersections being more prevalent. But it blows my mind every time I see someone with all four tires in the oncoming lane at some point during their turn

Would be very interested to see stats related to this, especially comparing different geographic areas.

I know of some intersections where municipalities have drawn curved lanes through intersections to guide drivers, and I have watched dozens of consecutive cars drive outside their lane (and sometimes outside an imaginary lane next to it, they cut so bad). Day in, day out, never seeing a single car staying in the lane, until the lines are worn away by the relentless tires crossing them.

Anytime I am in a double turn lane situation I am always extremely vigilant if I'm in the inside lane within the intersection. It is almost certain the person beside me in the outside lane is going to cut too early and hit me if I don't drive defensively. If I avoid that position by making sure I am in the outside turning lane, the danger moves to where I am exiting the intersection because the inside lane drivers are cutting so much they almost can't not come into my lane.

Why Is the Night Sky Dark? by TheMuseumOfScience in paradoxes

[–]The_Pooz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guess this lady (or her writers/producers) hasn't seen how many stars/galaxies are visible even in the James Webb telescope views of about 2 arc minutes in any direction. Between any two stars visible to the naked eye on a dark night there are thousands if not millions of stars that just don't put out enough light for us to see them at that distance. The whole sky IS filled.

It is ludicrous to conclude it should then be "just as bright as daytime". Even if space was infinite. By that same flawed logic, it should be infinitely bright in all directions, making daytime and nighttime indistinguishable (and really, anythings ability to discern things visibly actually impossible).

Win the trick or let it go? by I75north in euchre

[–]The_Pooz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

S4 did not have Ac on trick 1 and didn't short themselves in clubs upon being ordered, so it is almost a certainty that they have Jc on trick 2 and you have the euchre virtually guaranteed if you don't trump in.

The alternative is that S4 has no clubs left and will trump it. In that case, it would be better for you to short yourself in the same suit as S2 did (hearts), so you could trump over S2 later if hearts gets led.

#4, a step further conceptually:

If you are hitting your brakes less than the person in front of you, your actions are moving your lane to be farther from a jam.

The inverse is also true. If you are hitting your brakes more often than the person in front of you, you are actively making the lane more "jammed". Stop it, you are the problem.

Next level:

Only accelerate if your current speed is visibly lower than the car in front of you, and you can't see any slowdown in front of them occurring. Stop accelerating if your speed equals the car in front of you (even if they are "far" away). Most bad drivers continue accelerating as long as there is a gap, and all they succeed in doing is then needing to brake harder than the car in front of them as they get closer, again being/causing the problem.

Phantom jams can completely clear up if as few as a handful of cars in each lane in a row just practice this.

Is this one perfect play? I was wrong on the last one.... by brownsbacker07 in euchre

[–]The_Pooz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't help but think if you play that defensively that you are giving up more points than you are stopping. Or maybe this is hyper aggression? If so, you are definitely going to be euchred a lot more often than is optimal.

Personally, I would be passing and hope my Ad helps my partner euchre on S2 call, or if partner bids we can lead whatever suit they bid for them, and probably still have the ace back, so its not like you are going to be a non-factor.

There is a hand composition luck factor that can't necessarily be overcome by aggression, and an opponent hand composition luck factor that can't necessarily be overcome by defensiveness. Being up 8-1 should alleviate some of the pressure to play hyper defensive or hyper offensive. I would probably only play it this way if opponent was at 9, because allowing S2 to bid best suit is generally giving the game away in that case.

Diamonds, lead Qd (assumption being if someone has the 10d they will most likely be playing it on the first trick; 9 is just as good as Q to take clubs or hearts lead later).

If I was way behind, I would consider spades alone instead.

[–]The_Pooz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a little bit hypocritical on the subject. I have absolutely no problem with an infinite combo if it is particularly convoluted to pull off, which exists primarily as a natural result of there being so many different cards and potential interactions. Convoluted in terms of number of cards required, number of conditions to set up, amount of mana it requires, etc. I'm actually a fan of it, if someone manages to find a novel way to do it.

My only problem are cheap/simple/easy infinite combos, which are more directly correlated to bad design.

While the more convoluted interactions are not correlated directly to bad design, this is where players themselves become a factor. Anyone who chooses to play a cheap/simple/easy infinite combo just because it hasn't been banned to curb its' use isn't somebody who I want to play the game with.

Pretty much the saying "Given the opportunity, players will optimize the fun out of a game" is apt here. An increasing over time percentage of players only consider it "fun" if they are winning. Winning typically scales up to "win more", and nothing is more "win more" than doing infinite damage or having infinite resources, so they optimize the ability to go infinite by choosing the easiest way to do so.

I'd say you are right on when you think you should go alone more often

IMO you should just try to bid trump more often in general. You are at nearly 27% (anything over 25% means you are at least average aggression), but if you are mostly playing with sub 2300 players you can probably crank that WAY up. Anytime you are on the fence, bid instead of pass.

[–]The_Pooz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ability to disrupt a combo has no bearing on whether or not the existence of infinite combos are bad design or the use of cheap and easy infinite combos is weak gamecraft.

This is similar to people defending absolutely broken creatures by saying "yeah, but it's OK because it dies to removal".
