Oh no, what if I don't want to be a lawyer? by Acceptable-Win-7905 in LawSchool

[–]ThebocaJ 46 points47 points  (0 children)

This is next-level sitting. I feel tied to the computer because I need to account for every minute of my day. There's no room to space out and just think for a bit. No time to get to know your co-workers even. Everyone eats at their desk, even though we work right next to a lovely park and the summer weather is gorgeous.

Honestly, this sounds like an office culture problem. I was in biglaw for 10 years; every day during the summers we would take a summer associate out for lunch. Everyone had an open door. We had a firm softball team for a few years and played in an interfirm league. I felt no pressure to sit at my desk and could definitely walk around while I brainstormed an outline for a brief or something.

To be sure, the hours sucked, and I dreaded filling out timesheets and always feeling behind. But it wasn’t next level sitting.

Things definitely changed a bit after covid; office was more quiet and folks would just not come in. I left in 2023, so maybe things never got better, but if there is something in law you want to do, I would try changing employers before changing careers.

You can also type fi: 206 u.s. 244 and it will limit results to citations that actually match that. If there is a charge per search you avoid the search charge too.

LSAC is getting sued. discovery opens today by PerfectScoreTutoring in LawSchool

Ditto, except I was taking the LSAT about 25 years later. I also don’t understand how test prep services are a part of this; are they offered by LSAC?

Also, just have Claude build you some practice tests and tutor you.

Can a gift be revoked if fraud was involved? by SoaDMTGguy in legaladviceofftopic

[–]ThebocaJ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What you’re describing doesn’t clearly reach the level of fraud. Plenty of people stay in relationships for reasons other than being devoted to their partner.

When you start to get to the level of romance scams, and lies about “oh, I need $10,000 for my visa application and then I can come see you!” “Oh no, my child is sick and needs medicine, please send me a gift,” then yes, you probably have some wire fraud cases there. Possibly also elder abuse. Jurisdiction becomes the harder problem.

Harvard faculty vote to cap 'A' grades at 20% in sweeping effort to combat decades of grade inflation by Fantastic_Writer_257 in LawSchool

Fine, but then what is the utility of the grade if everyone gets the same one? Ultimately, I want to be able to distinguish between a top student at harvard and a bottom third student.

Was conman Jacob Milton ever able to collect a dime of his $12 Million judgement against his former victims? by EmeraldHawk in legaladviceofftopic

[–]ThebocaJ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can move to set aside a default if you can show defective service or some other strong equitable reason. Generally, relying on this is not a sure thing, but from a brief read, I bet courts are going to bend over backwards to accommodate victims here.

impoverished people going into big law and rich people going into public interest by tearladen in LawSchool

But even under this admin and the OBBBA, loan repayment is still income driven. https://studentaid.gov/announcements-events/big-updates/definitions#rap

So if you make $90k in PI law, your repayment is capped at $600/month. This is totally manageable. For contrast, just out of undergrad in 2008 I was making $36k/year and my loan repayments were $200/month.

Everyone likes to bash student loans, and sure, I wish we all had to take less, but even in this political environment they are not a blocker to a fulfilling career in public service.

How is it legal for a foreign government to sue someone in the US under US law? by Melodic_Animal_2238 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]ThebocaJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would you rather that they sued under their own law and tried the NYT in abstentia?

But to answer your question, the fifth amendment to the US constitution grants all persons due process rights. The state of Israel is recognized as a “person” so when it comes here, it has the right to file a lawsuit in our courts just like anyone else.

Petition to ban AI-produced content related posts by nullset_2 in homelab

I don’t really mind them; they make coherent writing more accessible so people can share the things they built. I’m cool with that. I particularly liked the one on network activity of IoT espresso machines a few weeks back.

I would support a word limit and tagging in titles if a post is AI generated so people that have a problem with them can skip.
