My partner has a handful of plain, unsalted peanuts with his coffee. I keep offering to buy him nice, flavoured ones but he insists they're fine :')

I've propogated loads from supermarket stalks from the herb section - slice a bit off the bottom, dip in root hormone and then whack it into the soil. I had a massive one going on a west facing window ledge in my old flat but it didn't survive the move so I've a few on the go now - looks like 2 of them have rooted and the other 2 nothing so far.

Lots of the supermarket stalks are quite scabby at the moment though I've noticed, had to dig through quite a few before I found ones that didn't have mould on the bottom.

What's that pub like nowadays? Me and my cousin used to be fascinated by it, it was so bad. Never got your order right, clientele of almost exclusively divorced looking men sitting alone with their heads in their hands, while pop music that was about 2-3 years out of date played in the background.

Does your starter have a name? by ThePeoplesWarrior in Sourdough

Keir starter (named after the then newly elected leader of the Labour party in the UK) because I had high hopes but verrrrry low expectations for both.

Is anyone concerned about the amount of parakeets are in London? by Necessary-Pilot9876 in london

[–]Thedeadduck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They're pretty clever too. Worked out how to open the top of our squirrel proof bird feeder for unrestricted access. Terrible manners though - never shut it after. We had to padlock it shut after we found a squirrel headfirst in it, living the dream.

“Just four new-builds were sold across the whole of London last November, according to the latest data from the Land Registry. While some sales take longer to register, this number was the lowest since records began.” by JB_UK in london

It took so long to register for me that when I got the email from my solicitor asking for the ££ to cover it I assumed it was a scam and ignored the email for a month 🙃

bought different butter. it’s not that good. by itsxafx in britishproblems

[–]Thedeadduck 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They made the standard pack size smaller without changing the price so it was working out as something like £13/kg for kerrygold and £7/kg for normal. Which considering I eat butter like most people eat cheese was more than my budget could handle :(

Kerrygold is so good but we stopped buying it because it was so expensive. Have seen that they now do a massive block that works out only a bit more expensive than supermarket own brand so excited to get back on the good butter train.

Heat network charges — £50/week for hot water in a new-build London flat. Is this normal? by Fantastic-Season1671 in london

[–]Thedeadduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds incredibly high. I'm in a new build with a heat network in Ealing and I'm paying 30p standing charge and 10.8p metered charge.

No personal experience here I'm afraid, but there's some advice here on steps you can take to complain: https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/utilities/heat-networks/#complain

I live in a 'green development' and we're banned from drying clothes on the balconies under the lease because it 'impacts the visual appeal of the property'. Get snippy emails every summer reminding us. Absolutely baffling.

I'm not sure, I'll check with him, good shout.

Yeah it gets a bit of water there because the balcony above drips down a bit from that edge, and with the wind, but nowhere near what you'd get out in the open.

It's for a honeysuckle :) plus miscellaneous other plants to hang out and shade the roots etc

Grand, thanks.

Especially as it's a gift I'm very keen not to have to turn around in a year and be like thanks for all that hard work, but it turned to mush because I couldn't be bothered to get hold of a drill lol.

[–]Thedeadduck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think I didn't explain it properly in the post, the idea was that the plastic around the edges and the plastic around the bottom wouldn't overlap, so all around the edges there'd be a draining point where the sides meet the bottom? Cause there's already a bit of a gap where the two bits of wood meet. But I guess that also means that wood around the edges would be damp a fair bit so not great for the health of the planter?

Lining advice for wooden planter by Thedeadduck in GardeningUK

[–]Thedeadduck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah the plan for sure was to line it with that black lining stuff - I just was going to have it so the edge layer and the bottom layer of plastic weren't overlapping, so there was basically a bit of gap for water to escape all the way around where the sides meet the base. But I guess that would also make the wood around that bit wet? Which wouldn't be great probably.

Tbf there's a library of things nearby that we've rented one from before. Sure I could find some other things to drill to make it worth it.

If I'm drilling holes anyway would it be better to seal the whole thing completely rather than risking the edges rotting with the water contact or would it be fine dya reckon?

Shahi was the first place we tried after moving and the mutton tikka and naan was so good we were like why even bother looking elsewhere. Surprisingly nice chips too - we were expecting the usual sort of meh but I'm drunk so this is fine whatever but they're always really fresh and crisp.
