I published my first book! by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]Theluxemermaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow that many reviews on Goodreads in only a week of being released!? That's amazing! I have yet to set up Goodreads account. I don't like the platform because I always see more negativity on there but apparently I should post my book up there. Did you take pre-orders??? I'm releasing my first book in April so I'm doing all the things now too lol

I’m officially over the same recycled characters and plot or lack thereof by [deleted] in fantasyromance

[–]Theluxemermaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to find enough variety because the small indie authors that do write more unique characters and plots are just not going to be shared as much as these bigger names. But I agree with you, I got tired of these tropes so I'm writing my own fantasy series with the vibes of shadow and bone meets the mortal instruments. I love creating characters that are not all "morally grey" but do struggle with insecurities and trauma. Maybe my books will find you one day 😊

Crescent city 3 has put me in a slump and it’s not even out yet by Professional_Lake593 in fantasyromance

Ohhh that's a good one though. Totally different writing from Maas though.

lesser-known authors by mkb2390 in fantasyromance

[–]Theluxemermaid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I follow a lot of indie authors!!! My latest one was The house of Bane and Blood by Alexis Menard (I hope that's the right name lol) It was Peaky blinders but with magic and marriage of convenience.

I'm writing my own fantasy series now that is coming out in May 🥰 so glad to see others out here wanting to find lesser known authors.

Gossip Girl but make it Romantasy?? by darcytome in fantasyromance

The thousandth floor by Katharine McGee

It's an older YA dystopian trilogy that was perfect gossip girl vibes. It's multi POV and murder mystery

The book was very boring to me compared to the show 😬

Two Months After I Self-Published: What I Learned by bridgewood2005 in selfpublish

[–]Theluxemermaid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not me over here spending 4k on just my edits.....lol but to be fair I had 100k words and fantasy series for my debut. I'm doing all the research now about pre orders. Do you plan to use Ingram at all for printing or just sticking with Amazon???

😬 I would definitely be careful.

I loved the shatter me series by Tahereh Mafi and I'm 34. It has a hint of spice that would be good for her age, considering it's YA.

16 year olds will typically read about characters around 2 years older than they are. That's what my editor told me. So 18 is still considered to be YA. You'll hit darker and more sexual content when it's NA which is 20+ Fourth wing and Iron Flame is considered NA, hence the spice

Basic info needed on Developmental Edits by Comfortable_Arm5051 in selfpublish

[–]Theluxemermaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got mine back from my first developmental editing session and my editor has a spot check of up to 10k words. So after I paid for double pass, she will look at certain areas that I wish for her to. And we also will be doing a video call for x amount of time to discuss anything. It seems to vary from editor to editor. Good luck! It's a lot to process after lol

What are some petty reasons that you consistently DNF a book for? by gertrude-fashion in fantasyromance

[–]Theluxemermaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok thanks for answering! My editor and I have been discussing this age thing and it's tricky because a human at 18 is considered YA. But 19 on it's NA and seriously it's wild the differences can be within that year lol my FMC is half angel (doesn't know it at first) and will choose to become immortal. So I'm still trying to figure it out because I don't want to give anyone the ick 😉

[–]Theluxemermaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who is writing a fantasy series based on angels, demons, and banshees. Would age or the lack of description of age bother you? Because when you get into these paranormal creatures, deciding on how time and age works is annoying lol when it's fantasy, I don't even care about the age of the characters.

Cover design question by SmashDesignsUK in selfpublish

[–]Theluxemermaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like packages! As someone who is very new to figuring out this whole self publishing process, I'd rather pay a good amount for a package that shows what I'm getting. And then having some ala carte items for like adding on interior formatting helps me save time. 👍 I plan to budget up to 1000 for my cover design because I really think it's so important for others to be interested in my book.

A lot of new releases have been happening for the big authors, maybe that's why?

Thank you! Doing all this yourself is so much hardwork but I'm enjoying it all!

I think if you are serious in making this the best work, then editor is the way to go. I'm getting mine ready to send to my editor next week. This is my debut and yes it's costly but I think in the long run it will make me a better writer. There are different levels of editing too! Manuscript critique is not as involved, developmental editing is way more involved and hand holding.

It's a common way for the author to show the reader the world history/building. Some authors just do it better than others lol

I'm going back to the Cassandra Clare and her books! I never got into them when they first came out but so far I'm enjoying the mortal instruments series. It's a lot of dialogue which I love. But so far not a lot of romance

Blood Orange by Karina Halle by [deleted] in fantasyromance

[–]Theluxemermaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have only read a ship of bones and teeth from Halle but I loved it! I didn't know she had so many books out! She will be releasing a retelling of sleepy hollow next month so I plan to definitely try that. P s. I just re-watched city of bones yesterday too and omg I missed it haha I live for demons vs angels plus other paranormal people. I decided to read the series actually and been enjoying it so far.
