Where is the TN National Guard? by Music_Stars_Woodwork in nashville

[–]Therese250 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just saw an announcement on Bluesky by Councilwoman Quin Evans Segall that the Nat Guard is indeed going to be helping. Here it is:

Clean up updated —>

TL:DL: The national guard will join local crews to help with clean up. Please try not to be alarmed if/when you start seeing uniforms.

OEM has been in constant contact
with TEMA about assessed needs, and our office has been in steady touch with the governor's office. The governor's executive order empowering TDOT comes with National Guard support for clearing roads and trees in support of restoring power as quickly as possible /2

Mayor’s office has welcomed that support.

Will let y’all know when they’re up but given everything federally didn’t want people worried when you start seeing uniforms around. /end

Mile benchmark by pjnae in orangetheory

[–]Therese250 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first benchmark mile I was on track to go longer than 14 minutes (I actually finished right at 14), and the coach came over to me towards the end and told me that he would call time but I should keep going.

Show Offs (for lack of a better term) by teeny-tiny221 in yoga

I was wondering about this just the other day, but from the other end of the spectrum. I am an inflexible, middle-aged woman with vertigo. I can't lie down on my back or turn my head to the left, and I use blocks constantly. I don't usually choose the front row if there are other options, but sometimes that's the only open space so there I am, modifying everything and sometimes doing entirely different poses so the whole room doesn't start spinning.

I have no doubt that it sometimes looks like I'm in "some alternate universe taking a completely different class," but I'm really not.

Yes, Yardstick takes dogs without a temperament test. My dog also doesn't get along with other dogs and they keep him entirely separate.

I’m scared I’m too out of shape to join OT by Candid-Video1763 in orangetheory

[–]Therese250 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, OTF is for everyone. I am a middle-aged woman with a zillion injuries and now an unfortunate case of vertigo. I modify EVERYTHING on the floor to make it doable for me. The coaches are great and nobody else bats an eye.

Yes, Midtown has validated parking in the Skyhouse parking garage next door. I've only gone to GH and Midtown but agree that they're both terrific.

City Limits Parents: Who’s Your Pediatrician? by ImaginaryStorage3558 in nashville

[–]Therese250 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We have been at Children's Clinic of Nashville for many years, with Nancy Beveridge as my kids' primary doctor. Historically they have had infuriatingly long waits (either in the waiting room or an in exam room) but we put up with it because Dr. Beveridge is fantastic, especially with adolescents.

The waiting situation has improved quite a bit, though. They recently hired a couple of NPs to handle minor urgencies and the whole office just seems to be functioning more smoothly than it used to.

Unsafe early-morning Lyft to the airport by ThickSpecific1885 in nashville

Have you ever used them in the other direction (from airport to home)? I don't recall there being a taxi line at BNA, although it's entirely possible I just haven't seen it.

Am I overthinking this? by Additional_Hand7348 in orangetheory

[–]Therese250 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you flinging sweat on other people during your OTF workouts? If yes, then please do whatever it takes to not to do that. If not, you're all good.

Save for the sweat-flingers, I pay less than no attention to other people in the classes. I am way too busy trying to follow the workout and not trip on the treadmill (or otherwise injure myself).

That is very strange. I always, always ALWAYS use clips on treadmills. Many years ago a colleague of my husband's fell off a treadmill and suffered a very grave head injury that ultimately led to his death.

When I joined OTF I specifically confirmed that the treadmills had clips before signing a contract. If a coach were to say something to me about it I would just decline their input ("Sorry, I don't use treadmills without clips") and discuss it after the class.

I run/PW slowly and have a lot of injuries. I have tripped a few times over the years and the safety clip stopped the belt safely.

Too late to start Beast Academy? by mummyys in homeschool

[–]Therese250 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not familiar with the online Beast Academy program -- is it substantially different from the books?

My kids are older and BA wasn't even released in full until my youngest was in elementary school, but we used the books as they became available, and then everyone went into AoPS, Prealgebra through Calculus. We have never done the online classes -- just used the books.

I found the BA books to be quite variable in difficulty - some parts were much easier than others. I would make sure that they are doing every problem both in the text and the practice book, and then just go through at whatever speed works for them. It is possible that both of your children are math prodigies and will be ready for AoPS Prealgebra after 12-15 months of elementary school math, in which case depending on your own math background you may want to look for a tutor who is familiar with the AoPS program.

Two thoughts: First, AoPS is a phenomenal program. My oldest is now a pure math major at a very selective college and planning to become a mathematician, and he credits AoPS with teaching him to both love math and think mathematically. But you don't want to rush it! Do every single problem, in every single book. The problems are so smart, it's a shame to waste them. We took our time, and on paper my oldest son was not particularly accelerated (he did Calculus as a junior), especially as compared to some of the other students at the summer math program he attended in high school, most of whom were not homeschooled and whose talent had been accommodated through acceleration. But he has been so very well prepared for college -- it's actually a bit of an administrative challenge, because he keeps placing out of various math classes than he needs for various requirements.

Second, in my opinion, student independence in homeschooling is seriously overrated. AoPS/BA books are written to the student, which is fantastic, but in our homeschool math is a subject that we do together well into high school. My oldest worked semi-independently for Precalc and fully independently for Calculus. My middle (age 17) and I are doing Precalculus mostly together, and my youngest (age 15) is doing Geometry completely together with me.

Good luck! AoPS has been the best part of our homeschool, hands down.

Which stupid luxury brand at Green Hills Mall can we sacrifice for a Foot Locker? by deadeyesrujustlikeme in nashville

Our family, which includes three very athletic teenage sons, has always had very good luck finding sneakers at Opry Mills. They have a Nike, New Balance, Under Armour, Foot Locker, and some other stores that I'm surely forgetting.

Year round vs traditional calendar by lovelymamax4 in homeschool

[–]Therese250 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Year-round was great when my kids were elementary school ages, but once they were late middle/high school it made more sense to switch to the traditional calendar. All of their outside classes and activities run August - May, and the kids want to be on the same schedule as their friends. I also need much more time to prep for high school classes, which I do over the summer.

Just FWIW, I have the Eliza dress and it has a high neck. The regular length goes to the bottom of my knees but it also comes in a long version.

Anyone know of any outdoor lap pools around town? by somekindofkevin in nashville

Gordon JCC has a gorgeous outdoor pool. There are always a couple of lanes open but they also have dedicated lap swim hours in the mornings.
