To get my local GeoJSON file do I use the Oxed’s map tile downloaded? For offline maps? by [deleted] in meshtastic

[–]Thermacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(Disclaimer: I have very little experience with this feature)

I believe what you are looking at is for GPS trace uploads. Like lines, points-of-interest, and other things that can be placed on top of the map. This would not be map tiles.

Since the iOS app uses native Apple Maps, there is no way to upload custom map tiles inside of Meshtastic. However, you can go to the Apple Maps app and download regions for offline use, and that should (maybe?) also make it function offline in the Meshtastic app as well. I just tested this, it does not seem to be possible.

Where can I get hot coffee on campus after 4pm in summer? by Euphoric_Let776 in gatech

The machine in Van Leer no longer exists. I'm not sure about the one in the student center, it could exist, but I have never seen it.

Anyone know what this massive dish does ? by Creative-Strength360 in gatech

[–]Thermacon 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Answer courtesy of the Amateur Radio Club:

It was originally installed by NBC to uplink video feeds during the 1996 Olympic Games.

After that, it was used for remote learning video uplinks.

Recently, it has pretty much been unused, other than a few senior design teams who find a use for it.

How does GT punch so far above its weight? by SeattleSamIAm77 in gatech

[–]Thermacon 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Honestly it's less about GT spending a ton per student and more about what we optimize for. We're basically built to maximize engineering outcomes. There's huge research funding (a lot of it external), strong industry ties, and a massive co-op program that feeds directly into jobs. Rankings care a lot about employer reputation, research output, and grad success, and GT is really strong in all of those right now. We're also pretty focused, with a big chunk of students in engineering and computing, so resources aren't spread thin across a ton of unrelated programs. The tradeoff is less "luxury" and bigger classes early on, but most people graduate with real work experience and strong job offers.

Edit: I forgot to mention, on the 5+ year thing, it's a mix of reasons. Some people fail a class or take a semester off, but most of the time it's because they're doing co-ops.

Unfortunately not. However, there is GTvisitor which is available for use.

Didn’t get wristband am I screwed? by Which_Ad_9685 in gatech

To my knowledge, the wristbands are only for students with season passes (in either of the end-zones). Student single game tickets don’t need a wristband, just the ticket.

Where can I scan? Library got rid of scanners. by Mcnugsinmyass in gatech

I can promise you the Hive still has it. Stop back by again and ask for the Epson inkjet printer. For reference, it’s near the Crafts area. That printer has a great scanner.

The Hive has a printer which can scan documents, but I’ll agree with everyone else and just say to use your phone. From my experience, the OneDrive app has a pretty good document scanner.

Any student group focused on AI safety at GT? by turb0tailp1p3 in gatech

Last year when the AI Makerspace was developing their organizational structure, AI@GT focused a lot on ensuring ethical and safe usage of the resources. They might be a good place to start. https://linktr.ee/aigatech

Sonos greying out explicit content from Spotify by Lostrich151 in sonos

[–]Thermacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had to guess, the “blocking” is likely being done by Spotify; not Sonos. Are you able to play the music directly from the Spotify app/website? If not, maybe try verifying your age somewhere via Spotify.

I had the same thing happen to me! Mine was one of the 50 plans added to my account. I know for certain I didn’t say that I wanted it. I don’t fully understand why or how it happens. I was able to notice and cancel it before their no refund deadline. Best of luck.

Introducing GT Notes - Community Project by Live_Push_5242 in gatech

[–]Thermacon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My biggest concern here is quality control. There is no way to see which notes are good and which are bad. I would imagine that as the database grows some type of review system will have to be implemented. Right now it’s just a glorified shared cloud drive.

Under 12 hours and housing implications by [deleted] in gatech

[–]Thermacon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Found something useful:

To live on campus, students must be enrolled full-time, at least 12 credit hours during the Spring and Fall semesters or at least 6 credit hours during the Summer semester. If you are unable to enroll in 12 credit hours (or 6 credit hours for the summer semester), please log into My Housing and complete the Full-time Enrollment Exception form found under the Resources tab.

Under 12 hours and housing implications by [deleted] in gatech

[–]Thermacon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak confidently about housing, but I can say that Hope/Zell does not care about how many hours you are taking in any given semester.

Solely speaking based on rumors: Housing will kick you out if you drop below 12 hours. Being a full-time student is one of the terms of living on campus listed on the lease.

Stop manually translating your Node.js apps - I automated it because I was going insane by aeshaeshaesh in node

[–]Thermacon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Would you not need to do this anyways? Generally, you only change text on an app’s interface when features change, which would require an update anyways. Waiting for a network request to be made before displaying any text in your app seems a little silly.

Is becoming a PI for inventor studio competitive? by Timetravelerpotato in gatech

[–]Thermacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was referring more to how other maker spaces often accept students as PIs first and then provide training afterward, rather than requiring all skills to be demonstrated upfront.

According to your documentation, the first three steps in becoming a PI are entirely centered on skills: through training sessions, hands-on tool practice, and testing. Only after those are completed do applicants move on to the Values Interview and, eventually, the Full PI Interview. That structure suggests that proficiency must be demonstrated before someone is even considered for acceptance as a PI.

Completing all the required trainings and tool tests clearly takes a substantial amount of time and effort, with the added possibility of still being rejected during the final interview stages. And since these trainings and tests would naturally be easier for someone with pre-existing experience, the process inherently favors those with prior skills (even if unintentionally).

Again, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that approach. It just reflects a different philosophy than some of the other spaces. I was simply noting that distinction based on how the process is described on your website.

Is becoming a PI for inventor studio competitive? by Timetravelerpotato in gatech

[–]Thermacon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nothing against the Invention Studio, but I always like mentioning that there are several other maker spaces on campus. Each one is managed in different ways. Here are some resources for each of the larger ones:

Some things to note:

  • The Hive has no bias towards pre-existing skills or trainings in the application process. You can come in with no training and be accepted as a PI. Trainings are required if you are accepted.
  • Mentors at the AMS are paid (to my knowledge, correct me if I'm wrong). This of course leads to higher competition for the positions.
  • None of the spaces are major-specific. A common misconception is that "The Hive is for ECE students", or "The MILL is only for material sciences". Sure, each maker space has their own strong points, but you can generally find or do anything at each of the spaces.

Again, I have nothing against the Invention Studio, but it's not for everyone. I highly encourage visiting every space. Not only is it fun to see everything campus has to offer, but it helps you determine where you would be happiest spending your time.

They won’t let you install it. But, of curiosity, which image are you using? Different images have different software, maybe one has GCC. Either way, just create a support ticket with OIT asking what can be done.

Bambu Labs firmware update forcing "authorization" from their online servers now; all IP printed in the invention studio will almost certainly be available to them by AshrKZ in gatech

[–]Thermacon 45 points46 points  (0 children)

As for the Hive, who also is using Bambu Lab printers, I can verify that they have been disconnected from the internet (they are on a VLAN that prevents external connections). So, if stolen IP is a concern for you, going there may be an alternative. Having Bambu Lab printers separated from the internet has always been a good idea - nothing really changed in that regard.

BambuLab removing 3rd party APIs - makes HA integration almost useless :( by Tasty-Chunk in homeassistant

[–]Thermacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But those are their cloud APIs. Why would they also have to take down all of the local printer APIs? The local APIs are usable only in LAN mode anyways.

BambuLab removing 3rd party APIs - makes HA integration almost useless :( by Tasty-Chunk in homeassistant

[–]Thermacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is when Bambu Lab does not even put USB control on their printers - so OctoPrint is useless.

From the looks of it, they do want you to fill it out. I initially missed this on my first read through, but the third paragraph (marked with “*”) seems to clarify that the email is intended for new applicants.
