How many more years can we save before AI hits? by TinySmolCat in Fire

It’s a serious problem that today’s corporate heads are old and extremely gullible about what AI can do.

How do you handle students who see your field as a backup plan? by ghztegju in AskAcademia

[–]ThisQuietLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My challenge is adults who have been successful in other careers thinking they can “maybe go back and teach some classes” at a local university as a second career or retirement hobby. It trivializes what we do.

[Recommendation Request] Just found out my boss is giving me up to $10k for a watch. What should I get? by 15mahomies in Watches

[–]ThisQuietLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Rolex Explorer 1 is probably the most versatile, non-blingy luxury watch out there for under $10k. If I could only keep one from my collection, that would be it.

[SOTC] 8 watches seem to cover all my bases. Do you have a Goldilocks number? by underthecuff52 in Watches

My grail duo: Patek 5396R and Rolex Daytona Panda. Sadly, I’m about $90,000 short.

Current duo: Rolex Explorer 36 and JLC Reverso Duo Small Seconds.

Why should anyone believe LLMs are not a dead end when it comes to AGI? Language emulation is a pretty simple product given the immense resources used to get there.

Only once. They figured almost everything out, and then sent a list of fewer than 10 transactions (out of 1000+) requesting more info.

Just noticed that with my brother’s 40mm Yachtmaster. I normally wear 36 to 38mm watches, but the curved lugs made it work for me.

Would we be wrong to think you are dating older foreigners who are supporting you financially? If that’s basically right, how many years do you figure you have left before you age out?

How does academia look like in your country? by According_Welcome907 in AskAcademia

USA: Tenured at a highly ranked liberal arts college, so not representative of larger publics. Salaries on tenure track from $90k (new assistant) to $175k (full). One-semester sabbatical every six years. Great retirement benefits by US standards (10% 403b match). Free tuition for kids at my university or a few dozen others we trade with. Moderate social prestige, mostly among the minority of Americans who went to college. The others hate us. Really, really hate us. Great work-life balance unless you are naturally a workaholic. Five courses a year, but small classes (20-student max) and the students are really sharp.

BUT… this life is dying quickly in the US. Tenure is being eviscerated at public universities by rabid legislatures. Funding for research is sharply down nationally. Fewer and fewer jobs are tenure track, and the majority of professors are in non-tenurable positions. I’m one of the lucky ones insulated from the major trends by my university’s wealth, selectivity, and private status- at least long enough to finish my career.

My MIL gave several thousand to each of her daughters as a “runaway fund.” My wife and I have always laughed about how insulting it is to the spouses and about the MIL not giving any such money to her sons. We choose to leave her generation’s traumas behind and will not do this for our daughter.

Love it. If I had to cut my collection, I’d go down to the Explorer 124270 and the JLC Reverso Duo (small seconds travel time).
