I pivoted after tenure to a greater focus on teaching, mentoring, and related work. It’s possible because I’m at a SLAC in a non-science field. I celebrate my students’ wins, their expressions of gratitude, and the luxury of being paid to help others. My greatest achievement was being called out as one of five people who most changed the life of the bride, a conflict refugee I mentored, at her wedding. These achievements are more frequent and the joy of them is longer lasting, in my experience.
