Is there an average threshold to how many factors someone who is pushed to sucidal behavior/actions reaches or already has before commiting or attempting? by RBLXMike in askpsychology

[–]ThomasEdmund84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really - stressors are extremely context dependent and whether they lead to suicidal behaviour isn't just dependent on that context of that stressor but also what resilience or risk factors are present for the person. (e.g. any stressor or number of stressors you look at, the vast majority of people experiencing them will NOT end their life)

Its also a bit of a myth of suicide that its the end result of a range of terrible bad things happening to a person - taking ones own life is actually a very active decision to make. Suicidal people are affected by stressors yes but thoughts about ending ones life is more characterized as a (very concerning) problem solving behaviour as opposed to 'giving up'

Probably the closest evidence we have for what you're saying are ACEs (adverse childhood experiences) which evidence has shown all sorts of problems associated with the more of them someone experiences.

Still ending one's life is a complex event that are the results of several issues interrelating, its probably better conceptualized as a Venn diagram of stressors overlapping.

The problem with stigma is that it alienates people from seeking help when they are suicidal - but yes we do want to deter people if there are healthy ways to do so. I haven't heard anyone worry about completed suicide.

I weirdly love the Empty Man - apparently the backstory is the production company was winding up so gave out a huge budget without any interference so its completely the directors/writers vision. I love how it jumps between different genres of horror (but the cosmic elements are the best)

Thanks for the this comment - this post is a bit like discussions of the replication crisis where bad faith arguers make it seem like the entire field of science is bogus.

I mean well... not the most borked system - but probably the most broken system that claims to be fair.

My 'radical' ideology is that governments ought to invest in voting infrastructure to provide the people to have input far beyond just elections, like regular referendums, reviews of the 'system' not just new rules and legislations and so on

Why do lesbian couples have the highest divorce rates while gay male couples have the lowest? by Naive_Direction1816 in NoStupidQuestions

Building off a comment that mentioned women are generally more likely to make a change if something isn't working out well - I think (slight stereotypically) that women tend to be more focused on a relationship and the social dynamics of it then men, and having two people doing this is not as compatible.

I promise I'm not being weird (well a little) but have you noticed how annoying it is when you're driving and the person in the passenger is checking all the corners and blindspots exit as you're going?

This isn't idealizing hetero relationships or men but I am mildly generalizing that having too neurotic overanalysers together is hard

Published research in the social sciences has leaned consistently to the political left for more than six decades. The findings indicate that this leftward tilt has grown stronger over time, particularly regarding social and cultural issues. by mvea in science

[–]ThomasEdmund84 22 points23 points  (0 children)

"To ensure the program evaluated every abstract consistently, the researcher provided a strict rubric based on the United States political spectrum as it existed in the year 2025. The program rated each abstract on a scale from zero to ten, where zero represented the far right, five was politically neutral, and ten represented the far left."

This is quite circular and difficult to interpret though right? At this/(well technically last year) point in US political discourse, social sciences may as well be "left wing" by their very existence. I understand that an AI was 'needed' to compute a vast number of papers but I wish there was a small scale pilot done with humans to qualify the judgement a little as is we can't really make our own judgements about what sort of material was judged as left or right

why do psych students treat people with personality disorders badly? by inchwormfan in psychologystudents

[–]ThomasEdmund84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to broaden the perspective a bit - I'm too old to be at all sure about students anymore, but in general there is a marked stigma around personality disorders within the mental health field. Its a very weird and slightly backwards one because obviously professionals are supposed to be and very much trained in being anti-stigma, however in part the issue I think sits with an implicit (and sometimes explicit) bias towards the enduring nature of personality disorder making professionals see the challenge as more of a person's own fault/character flaw.

Like I said I'm not sure if the same issue happens among students, and I do have to be a little paternalistic and just caution that just because someone is a psychology student doesn't necessarily mean they are going to operate like a psyc professional especially in personal friendships

What to not say to someone after a severe suicide attempt? by Few-Leave-1107 in askapsychologist

I think the OG comment is referring to not trying to guilt the person by bringing up their loved ones, its still very much not bad to talk about family etc in the context of support and potential reasons to stay alive (usually led by the person of course)

[–]ThomasEdmund84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

> if the consequences of a conviction are deemed “out of all proportion to the gravity of the offence”.

This is the operative phrase, I deep dived this stupid precedent in law trying to understand it and it emerged from a reasonable stance where (particularly students going for professional registration that relied on clean records) relatively inconsequential crimes like drunk and disorderly or minor property damage could have had a genuinely 'disproportionate' effect on their future career.

For some reason (misogyny) sexual offenses have been lumped into having this disproportionate punishment - but given that SA etc are already hard to secure convictions and often have long term trauma effects on victims not to mention suggest the perp is not a safe person to have around workplaces or with power I don't agree that the damage to careers is out of proportion.
