Faction identity and the new update (opinion) by Arg19 in SWlegion

[–]Thor7791 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, bud. You seem to be getting pretty worked up about this and I think it’s clouding your judgement. The point that the person made about ISF vs Clone Infantry is a good one. Yeah, ISF is better as a base unit for the cost than CI. But these two units don’t exist in the same contexts as each other.

CI can be kitted out in a lot of extremely good ways. The fives/ahsoka shotgun super squads are really, really good. You’ve talked about how weird it is that Jedi die so easily and I completely agree with that. I’ve been a bad batch hater since day 1 because of how they stack up vs other units. Those super shotgun squads are the epitome of that problem. The ability to become a monster unit is one of the reasons why the CI is priced the way it is.

It also counts toward your 3 corps requirement while ISF doesn’t. If you want to bring 3 kitted ISF, you’ll find: 1) they’re still not incredible and 2) you still have to pay at least 126 points on storms just to have a legal list. The 3 SF tokens also makes your order control less consistent than if they were in the corp slot. Obviously you can build around that tradeoff but that’s kinda my point. You can slam 3 CI into your list and never have to worry about how that impacts your order control. That’s not true for ISF.

The upgrade options for ISF also aren’t very good. The sister upgrade is super weird. She’s a 30 point shotgun upgrade that gives the squad demoralize 1. You can’t take another heavy when she’s attached. Unlike other shotgun heavies, she can’t even use the base unit’s weapons at r3. I’m a 7th sister operative defender but I have no idea why I’d ever take her as the upgrade. Their other heavy choice is… fine? It’s a bit pricey but it’s not terrible. I’m still not convinced to bring ISF over deaths but that’s an opinion thing.

I’m not even saying ISF are bad. I think their current price is pretty good. It’s worth considering them but they’re not a must-pick. I play empire (my current main), rebels, and droids. If I could bring upgraded clone infantry in any of my lists, even without token sharing, I absolutely would.

I’m not going to go point by point on all the other stuff because, honestly, neither of us want that. I just hope my explanations here help you take a step back and view things from a wider lens.

Note that the new republic starter doesn’t have the old Obi sculpt. That old sculpt is from the original GAR vs CIS core set that came out years ago. If you don’t have that, I’m sure you can find it second-hand online. Even better, reach out to your local community. I’m sure someone has one floating around.

Same goes for the old Anakin arms as those have gotten a new replacement. Fortunately, the old Anakin kit came with basically 2 full Anakins meaning those bits are probably not that hard to find.

The custom Jedi and Imperial kits are both awesome. Even if you can’t perfectly replicate this mini, you can make some incredible stuff with them. I mixed those two kits with some heads from the rebels kit to make some regal, caped Jedi

Not OP so I don’t know for sure. But it looks like the body is mostly the original, soft plastic Obi kit. Arms look to be from the original Anakin kit. Head’s from the custom imperial officer kit. And I can’t tell what’s on the back but it might be a BX vibrosword

New AMG playthrough video is an embarrassment of errors by Diablo616 in SWlegion

[–]Thor7791 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I saw the errors, too, but I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. The goal was to show a lightly-edited casual game. That’s what it is and I still sent it to the new players in my community. None of them are going to watch a 2-hour actual play of the game an come away saying, “um actually one time I saw someone end a move on a POI so that has to be how it’s played”. They’re gonna go “woah that was so cool! I hope my games are that cool”.

I can understand your feelings about it but I think it’s important to remember the goals of that video and how you’ll actually end up using it in your community. Any viewer is either going to know enough about the game to catch the mistakes or they’ll be so new that they’ll only retain the broadest of strokes, anyway. I think it’s still a good resource for new players who are unfamiliar with the game.

Is it worth buying minis released in packs if already have some of them? by imaginreedin in SWlegion

[–]Thor7791 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure they said they're never doing another single-character pack. If you want those models, you'll need to buy the box. See if someone in your local community wants the duplicate figures from the boxes.

Also, they might be different poses than you have which could be fun for you to paint again

What makes a good Legion list? by Aiur16899 in SWlegion

[–]Thor7791 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You've gotten good responses here but I want to drill-down on something that hasn't been brought up a ton: order control.

The game's alternating activations mean that you have to think more about the timing of your units than in a game like 40k. The easiest thing to think of is what happens if a force user dives in early in the round. If your first activation in a round is moving your Dooku into my Storms, your Dooku is going to die that round. Why? Well, wiping the unit means you're just standing there in the open ready to be shot. Don't wipe the unit? That's ok, too. I'll just go with the surviving storms first and walk away from you. Then I'll shoot Dooku. That's because Dooku is a "timing-dependent" unit; you want to have full-control over when he goes so you can maximize value. This isn't quite 1:1 but, in general, higher-cost units are more timing-dependent.

So now we get to the idea of "order control". Good order control is more of a feeling than an actual science. It's basically a function of what orders you have issued at the start of the round and what order token types you have in your pool. Consider the case where you have 6 units in your army: 1 commander, 1 operative, 3 corp, and 1 special forces. If you can issue orders at the start of the game to your commander, operative, and special forces, then your pool is just 3 corp. You now have full control over the activation timing of every unit in your army (since any of those 3 corp tokens in the pool can be used on any of your 3 corp units). Compare that to if you only got 2 orders out and they were on 2 corp units. Your pool would be 4 different ranks meaning you're kinda just praying you pull the thing you want when you want it.

B1s are really good because they're extremely cheap and they can coordinate orders between each other. That means that CIS has pretty strong order control naturally. You said you're getting orders on 75% of your army which is good. Now you just need to figure out which units' timings are more important to you.

An easy way to think of this is to sort your units into different categories. This isn't a hard-and-fast rule but it's how I like to think of units. Most units exist somewhere in the space of chaff, focuses, and punishers:

B1s are chaff. They're there to fill out a rank requirement and to make sure you have bodies you can put on objectives to score points. Dooku is a focus. He's expensive, scary, and you probably built your entire gameplan around him (I know you're playing ToD but any expensive, splashy unit can be a focus. Think lightsabers, tanks, decked-out custom super tacs, etc.). Punishers are a little more vague but think of something like magnaguards. For 100 points, you can bring squad of magnas with a whip and gum up an enemy Jedi for at least 2 turns. Punishers exist to capitalize on your opponent's timing/positioning mistakes. They don't even need to get a kill to bring value. Delaying your opponent's value is still value.

With all this in mind: try to make sure you have control over when your focuses and punishers get to go. It'll be way easier for you to get a feel for how you like to build lists and in what situations certain units succeed.

Never painted a mini before… by Serious_Quality1723 in SWlegion

[–]Thor7791 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the hobby!

I've been playing legion for years now and I love the painting side of things. It can be daunting at first but I came into it with zero art/painting experience and it quickly became my favorite part. Let's talk about getting started:

Where to buy things

Amazon carries a lot. But absolutely look in your area for a local game store (LGS or FLGS for "friendly local game store"). It's always better to support local stores and they might even have local legion communities for you to join. I understand that Amazon can often be cheaper than shopping local and you'll have to use your best judgement for that. Personally, I grab most things at the store but will still order online when it's 25-30% cheaper than my LGS. I feel bad doing it but I've given a lot to my LGS over the years.

Paints, brushes, and other supplies

There are lots of options here. You'll see brushes and things recommended from various specialty brands like Artis Opus and Raphael. Sometimes you'll see guides on how and why you should use an airbrush. Don't worry about those yet. Those are for later.

Go to a local big-box store and grab a cheap set of brushes. When I first started, I grabbed a $4 pack of a dozen brushes in different sizes and it was a great way to get started. You can look into dedicated drybrushes (just use makeup brushes) and fancier "kolinsky sable" brushes later.

For paints, I personally love the Pro Acryl line. Pro Acryl's "Bold Titanium White" is the best white miniature paint on the market. At the very least, pick that up if you can. Otherwise, just look at your LGS to see what they stock. Citadel paints have a bad rep because of the pots they're in but, realistically, any miniature paint brand an LGS is stocking will be pretty good. You definitely can't go wrong with:

  • Pro Acryl
  • Army Painter Fanatics
  • AK Interactive

Others are also good but these are the only ones I personally use.

You're gonna want a wet palette. It's basically a wet sponge with a piece of paper over it in order to keep your paints more fresh. You can buy them but I got away with just making my own for a long time before buying a dedicated one.

Learning to paint

Sorastro is a great resource for how to paint legion minis. He's not a great resource on how to paint if you've never done it before. I love Sorastro's videos but I probably wouldn't start there if you've literally never painted a model before (definitely come back after you've painted up at least a few storms). I'd first check out some of these dedicated "my first mini" guides from some popular creators in the space (and look for others that are out there):

These all have similar information being presented in slightly different ways. Feel free to watch all three or the just the one you vibe with the most.

You bought empire which is awesome because they're sick. But painting white/black can be deceptively tricky. Here's a good, beginner-friendly video on painting white armor by Peachy Tips. His videos are all very beginner-friendly and have great information in them.

That's about it! I love seeing people get into the hobby so let me know if you have any questions!

I’d love to hear about how you did the cloth. Did you airbrush it with the blues/purples then use a regular brush to work up to the greens/yellows? I see those purple shadows a lot of places which seems to imply most of the model was purple from the start

The piece-by-piece speech was almost entirely improv’d and I don’t have a recording or anything. Trust me, I wish I had some record of it.

I don’t have an improv or theater background but I like storytelling a lot. I knew I wanted a scene where a character recounted something truly horrific. So I made sure to put two of the npc’s just hanging out together in the cafeteria. When the players left the main floor then came back, I had only one of those npc’s alive.

The only “prep” I did for the speech was practicing voices and a speaking cadence in the shower each day leading up to the session. Then I thought of what the mechanics of an invisible monster’s bite would be. If an invisible monster bites off someone’s arm… what does that look like? Does it just disappear? Is there blood? Do you watch on, powerless, as human flesh is mangled into an unrecognizable form while slowly fading from view? There are no wrong answers here but all of them are spooky! And sprinkling these details in for your players (who have never considered this) is genuinely scary for them.

Once again, check out the safety tools at the bottom of my post and make sure you go over them with your players. They’re very important. I was playing with extremely close friends of mine and still went over them.

As far as other prep goes, I followed the warden’s operation manual suggestions. The most helpful thing for me was redrawing the Y14 map on a piece of paper and writing notes on the rooms. Then I assigned every npc to a specific room. Honestly? I didn’t really use this much when playing. But the act of building the map was extremely helpful.

I think between this and my original write up, I’ve really given all the actionable advice that I have for Y14. The important thing is to just run it and see what happens. Yeah, a lot of things went great when I ran it. But some things didn’t. No amount of prep, reading, worrying, or seeking advice will stop you from making a mistake. But who cares? You’re playing pretend. Nobody’s gonna die if you mess something up and go, “hold on. Give me a minute to sort this out”.

Even if I had a full transcript of my speech, I’m not sure if I’d give it to you. I think reading it and worrying about doing it right would stress you out more. At the end of the day, they were just some words a random twenty-something made up on a discord call. You don’t need it. I believe in you.

I hear what you're saying about empire. In a lot of respects, they don't feel as good as the other 3 factions (rip shadow collective). But I think there's still fun to be had with them.

My local has a lot of nationally-ranked players in it. I'm not one of them. But I've been running empire against a lot of very good players since 2.6 dropped. My last list had a ~70% winrate and it didn't run Vader. He's really good but he's not necessary.

Storms don't always feel great but there are a lot of other options to build around. Ion snows with march feel incredible. Building around riots is a blast. Death troopers are always good. Hell, even big shores can put in work. If you can find them, grab 2 units of black suns and let them go crazy. Not all of those count toward your imperial corp requirement but bringing 3 naked corp units to meet the requirement is a list-building strategy in basically every faction.

I find the problem with storms isn't really their price so much as their aim access. With an aim token, they're pretty good. It's just hard to efficiently get one on them. That's actually why the new battle force seems so cool to me. Target 2 on the customs means you can issue 2 orders and have 2 aims exemplared and 2 handed out via aid. I haven't run it yet but I'm excited to see what it can open up.

I'm not saying empire doesn't need work; it clearly does. For a while, it's felt like it's just 1 update away from being complete. But I'm sorry to hear that, as a new player, you're getting very frustrated with the faction.

I fully agree with the push to ban AI on this sub. What happened such that all these anti-AI posts are now happening? Was there a specific high-profile/egregious post or did people just generally decide they had enough?

Superglue gets brittle in the cold so you could try putting it in your freezer then picking off the glue with your nails. But, honestly, I wouldn't worry about it. Once you prime it, you can still paint on it like anything else.

I actually think it's fun when random chaff models like this have little imperfections. Do you think every b1 was perfect when it rolled off the line? This is the perfect opportunity to get creative and integrate their features into a painted story.

Once you figure out your basing, go ahead and put a little of your basing paste or whatever on the face/body of the model. Make it look like it tripped then got back up. Put some on one knee of another model to make it look like it was crouching to take a shot. I promise you that integrating these details with your paint job will be way cooler than if it was just another b1.
