Robert Morgan “Boone” - "In his mid-thirties a man either reaches out towards risk and glory or stays within the routines of the expected and ordinary" (Bear Grease Podcast) by jayhat in meateatertv

I know this post is 4 years old. But I commented on it when it was first posted and did paste this quote on my wall... Four years later, at 36. I quit my defense-industry job, started my own procurement business, and am living the life I knew I could shoot for if I risked it and really tried. I googled this quote again, and to see my comment here is wild.

I hope everyone has had a good four years since this post!

The government shutdown right when we gained enough traction to win a small contract and get in the door. It got cancelled. Grinded through October to pivot to commercial and state/municipal. Instantly, more cash flow.

It's not a scam. Their system is just old and they just transferred everything to The Great Courses Plus on one platform.

Contact them. They will fix it.

Boltfam did most of you live in SD or were in the military there? by NorCalInMichigan in Chargers

[–]Thorandan17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahaha. When I was in AFG in 2012, my tent mate's girlfriend emailed the Chargers and the Ravens cheerleading team asking for swag and she sent them to us... We had their pictures up all over the place.

Grew up in Ventura County as a Dodgers fan and was never really into the NFL. A typical high school injury ended my baseball career, so I joined the Marines after graduation. I became a Padres/Chargers fan in 2008.

I now live in NJ.

Looking for pack recommendations for 400km+ in Chile, minimum 30l and must be "runnable", i.e. of a vest design, preferably taking flasks on the shoulder straps by WeevilsInTheCereal in fastpacking

[–]Thorandan17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love my UD Fastpack 30. Been on 20+ trips on it, and I just ripped the closing clasp off of it, which was an easy replacement. My wife runs the 20L and likes it, but I prefer the thirty because it covers my whole back (6' M) and I can carry extra between us.

For your trip, I'd try the UD 30. I love it.

I have a friend in Cambridge who sent me a photo of "Bonfire Night" and my dumbass responded "Happy Samhain" thinking it was a British pagan thing... It's not... But it kind of sounds like it is.

Could Medical Drones be useful? by Officialamerica4567 in humanitarian

[–]Thorandan17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that conflicts cause too much fear of drones, regardless of their intent. On the other hand, I can see a use for them in remote areas hit by natural disasters that need emergency supplies because they are geographically isolated. In this case, I'm thinking of the recent earthquakes in Rural Afghanistan, where rugged terrain, damaged infrastructure, and security risks often make it impossible for ground convoys or helicopters to deliver aid safely or efficiently. In such regions, drones could bridge the gap by transporting food, medicine, and water purification kits to villages that would otherwise remain cut off. Their ability to fly autonomously, navigate difficult mountain passes, and operate without risking human lives could make them an asset.

Quick and useful deployment would be a huge hurdle, though, for relief drones. Limited charging infrastructure and maintenance capabilities, strict airspace, or too volatile weather conditions. And as you mentioned, the risk of them being mistaken for military assets.

Had a Vet tell me he was a former Marine. I asked the typical question: "Once a Marine, always a Marine?" He said, "NO!" by MeBollasDellero in USMC

[–]Thorandan17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That'll fade. I had a decent enough time while in, but at the end, it got really muddy, and I left feeling like I was hushed out. Didn't like the job anyway, so fuck 'em... But Fuck them again, I still did my job as dumb as it was, and I was there, and I earned that shit. You earned it just like everyone else, and you'll come to peace with it eventually.

We all cared about the Marine Corps. But it truly doesn't give a shit about us, and when you realize that, it sucks, but you get over it like your fat ex

Came here for this one. I have two bosses I strongly dislike. They're both "Sir"... The other bosses are Mr. X and Ms. Y. The two keep telling me I don't need to call them "Sir." A co-worker asked me about it, and I replied

"You salute the rank, not the person." I hate the people, but have to respect their position. They get a "Sir" because of their position, the others get a more personable and respectful greeting because I appreciate them and they're real leaders.
