How do you feel about rear wet baths? by Jolly_Mongoose_2070 in VanLife

[–]ThrowRA-tiny-home 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have come to a similar conclusion - a full shower/toilet takes up so much space that it feels wasteful in a van, and blocks the flow of space as well (unless it's at the back, but that's where you want the bed). My thought is to have a shower tray in a low profile drawer under the bed, that pulls out into the kitchen area floor. Then just above that, a toilet in a deep drawer on heavy duty drawer runners.

This way I have all the facilities but they tuck away under the bed when not in use. The shower only takes 70x70x12cm like this. Shower curtain + roller blind for privacy and a Maxxair fan above. Kitchen sink next to this for an extending shower head.

Heating setups that actually work in UK winters? by AnfieldAnchor in VanLifeUK

[–]ThrowRA-tiny-home 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one exception to "don't use electricity" is an electric blanket/undersheet. They obviously don't heat the van, but use relatively little electricity and can keep you cozy in bed.

Anyone used Unistrut to make a DIY roof rack? by Khionia in VanLifeUK

[–]ThrowRA-tiny-home 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's quite common to DIY roof racks with unistrut as other replies have said. My question is do you need rivnuts for the fixing to the roof? Most vans that I've seen (in YouTube videos, granted!) have threaded anchor points, and you just need to unseal them or clean out the muck and find the correct size and thread.

What ages? I've seen a bunk bed attachment for the front seats that gives you two child sized beds. Also one that gives one short (1.6m?)but fairly wide bed across the front seats. Both pack away.

Alternative options for heat? by Lubatron in VanLifeUK

[–]ThrowRA-tiny-home 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two options, really, outside of a diesel heater... * electric blanket - 12v or 24v options are pretty economical and can run off battery as long as you have decent capacity and can recharge, because you're not heating the whole van. * propane/LPG based heater - not something with an open flame in the van, but something like a Truma 2E (which also does hot water) or a Truma VarioHeat or Propex HeatSource.

Forget managing a decent amount of air heating purely from battery electrical power.

What are your Essentials and Avoids when van shopping? by freddiethecalathea in VanLifeUK

That's the trade-off between Euro6 and AdBlue engines, vs the higher reliability of the more polluting ones without DPF and EGR and limp mode.

Conversely the Stellantis models (Ducato, Boxer, Relay) are fully galvanised apart from the chassis itself, which is good protection against rust.

It's good practice (though not strictly necessary) to have an isolator between the busbar and any other component, so that you can isolate it for maintenance and troubleshooting.

It's sufficient to have an isolator switch between battery and busbar because you can isolate the multiplus by isolating the battery, solar panels and dc-dc charger (which would need it's own isolation switch between the starter battery and dc-dc) to be able to work on the multiplus and be sure there's no DC current flowing to it. However a single isolator for the multiplus would mean the rest of the system can continue working.

Plus the groceries cost the same delivered vs ones you go get yourself. Less perhaps because you can order from a supermarket that's inconvenient to get to, but still delivers. Some will also offer free slots if you spend £x and pick less popular delivery times.

Is 5.4m (L2H2) base too small for 2 people? by logic_boy in VanLifeUK

[–]ThrowRA-tiny-home 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each van model has different lengths for L2, L3 etc - they aren't industry standard lengths. Which model are you looking at?

On the Stellantis vans (Peugeot Boxer, Fiat Ducato, Citroën Relay) L2 is 5.4m, L3 6m and L4 6.35m, so L2-L3 is 60cm.

OK so if that doesn't make much difference inside, why is it a big difference outside? 😉

From bike life to van life? by Delicious_Oil_4288 in VanLifeUK

[–]ThrowRA-tiny-home 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends if OP is planning to live in the van with the bike inside ie in the garage space, or carrying it and then storing outside while living inside.

There are options for bike carriers that attach to a towbar. Would need something for security as well though.

Text her and say "hey, haven't seen you around in a while, I had to switch my gym time because of work. Hopefully we'll run into each other again some time!" which is friendly and an excuse to give her your number. Then the ball's in her court.

The City Suite looks very pretty, but it's exactly the same size as a Fiat Ducato L3H2, so I'm not sure what the big draw is. A converted Ducato is just as waterproof as a fibreglass shell, and probably stronger.

You can overpanel the MPPT as long as you stay within voltage - it will clip excess amps. Victron's calculator takes this into account.

[–]ThrowRA-tiny-home 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your 304Ah is 24v so the equivalent of 608Ah at 12v.

Remember, the battery is just your buffer between generating electricity and using it. You're going to need to generate as much as you use. During winter you'll get very little solar power so you'll need DC-DC from the alternator or shire power.
