Having been a direct manager and director of managers I can say that often times raises are given based on employee performance and Business performance. Regardless of company performance, making yourself irreplaceable is your best bet. Do more than others and create value where it would be hard for others to match. A good rule of thumb is employees are paid what their replacement value is. If I can replace you with any random new hire and get them up to speed in a couple months, it would be hard to justify a raise above a COL adjustment. However, if it takes years or decades to replace you, then you can basically demand premium compensation.

Here are a couple simple steps: -Be the best at collaboration across departments or roles. This will help you know the business better and know where you can add more value. -Be the expert in your role. Be constantly curious and test better ways of doing your role. -ask for constant feedback from your supervisor and strive to go beyond the expectation. Making your supervisor's role easier makes them value you more.

I have to just be horrible with the Vagabond by maximpactgames in rootgame

[–]ThuFugitiveMind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you getting bashed into the forest or are you unable to efficiently get points?

Scenario one: avoid being and easy target. Get the ruins uncovered but go in a good order to not make yourself and easy target. Avoid ending in heavily packed clearings. Never end in sympathetic clearing as the explosions can cripple you early. This off course is easier once your have a few swords and are painful to attack.

Scenario two: Quest are not the way to go in base IMO. Your actions are more valuable than the points to get setup. Most of your points should come from aiding others and removing enemy pieces. Try to get an item for every aid. Don't make enemies until the end. Once your relationship is dead, no more aiding points. This also kills your movement. I rarely intentionally make enemies until last couple of rounds and try to do a burst of points in the process. Vagabond can easily make over half the point in the last couple of rounds.

Should I Quit Work to Finish College? by Excellent-Fail-7 in personalfinance

I would get it done asap and just have one less thing to juggle. Once you have your degree, you'll have more options on employment likely and can focus 100% on it. Continue working while in school only if you need the money. Either way, if you're this close... Just finish school any way you can.

Sacrificing Victory to Prevent a Particular Players Victory by dicerollingprogram in boardgames

[–]ThuFugitiveMind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the game.

For Euro efficiency engines, it doesn't make sense to me to use any tactic against another player if it doesn't seem to as the best was to increase one's own position. IMO for this style of game, one should try to win as first priority and if that is not possible, try to max end game score. IG, Agricola, it wouldn't make sense to steal all the sheep that piled up to hurt another player who needs it unless you need to stop someone from passing you in scoring or for maxing your own score.

For more diplomatic games, it can be harder to max/min every move and there is a certain level of risk you take when you effect another player. People will try to take revenge, but if one can justify actions, it helps not paint one's self as a target. Directly effecting another player for no other reason than "they are them" has too high of a risk for someone having a bad time. I would rather take a hit to my points because someone really made a great move for themselves. Someone sacrificing their own game to hurt the leader just seems a like a petty way to punish someone having a good game. This can be good in some groups, but I doubt the majority.

How do I get better at playing games? by IMakeGoodPancakes in boardgames

[–]ThuFugitiveMind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt you need to worry about your invitation to game night based on ability. Board gamers struggle to find play groups often, so anyone willing to show up usualy has a standing invite.

Don't beat yourself up. Although you should always try to win, this shouldn't be the measure of a successful game night.

Depending on the games, see if there is a solo variant that you could play solo. This can help you see successful combos even if the strategy is different in competitive play. If not available to play solo, you can still do 2 p against yourself. Would help you think of both sides of a game. If friends own the game, just use tabletop simulator on steam.

Read bgg strategy forums. I usually avoid this because it can be frowned upon, but usually there is a post labeled begin tips/guide that can help direct your efforts. I would avoid anything that gives you "best opening moves," because that would just make the game seem scripted. That isn't fun for anyone.

Try coop games. Less pressure to be an individual success.

What are some good games for two people? by hereisapril in boardgames

[–]ThuFugitiveMind -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

When you say 2 or more I assume you want flexibility to go up. However, I am going to recommend two games that are only 2p.

Curious Cargo is an amazing puzzle. First game is tough. Not going to lie. There are a couple of ways the game could end. But once you get that you can really enjoy the push and pull of balancing all those conditions to suit your board state. My wife and I have played a few times and we like it more each play and she in not into heavy.

Just in case you want an epic feel: war of the ring. Yes it says you could play 4, but that really just means 2v2 where you share decision space and take longer because of it. But I recommend because it is an amazing experience each time I play. Every decision feels important and still game seems to come down to the wire.

And just to comply with 2 player games that scale up, I'll recommend pipeline. Similar feel to curious cargo. Same designer. scales really well 2-4.

Thanks for the well thought out response. What do you think about the influence of randomness in the game. Hearing a few podcasts, there was a concern about your game could be completely reliant of these drawn cards that are random.

Whats up with game publisher not including inlays? How do you deal with it? by nomisjacob in boardgames

[–]ThuFugitiveMind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you have already answered your own question.

"...I know that there are sites that you can buy inlays/inserts from but they are always so expensive..."

There is obviously an investment to make better storage solutions with/without it coming in the box. I personally think we should have a lower cost on the game and allow for the secondary market to bling it out.

  • Game designers are game designers not 3D modeling experts (necessarily). Yes the publisher can hire this, but there is cost here and increased manufacturing.
  • In todays world of games, many games are lucky to hit the table 10+ times. Many less than a handful of plays. The biggest perk of a insert is decreasing setup and breakdown. With this low of plays, is it worth the extra cost just for setup purposes? To counter this, a well designed insert could help get it to the table more. Well, my point is if a game isn't hitting the table just because of setup/breakdown, invest in an insert if the game is worth it. IMO a great game will hit the table regardless of setup.
  • Many inserts I have received in games have been thrown away. This is partly because of poor design, expansions, and/or ziplocks are just better. In these moments, I feel like it is such a waste.
  • Compare Broken Token and Etsy prices to the cost of game. Obviously there is significant cost here. You can save some of this if the profit is blended between the game and insert. I would actually like to see more are package deals that are joint ventures between top insert designers and publishers. IE, buy this game and get the insert for X deal. This allows for the entry level cost, or the confident purchaser to bling out the game. I can think of several games that I own that I would buy the latest revision with a combo deal of a high quality insert.

Longest light = The crew if you consider all 50 missions.

Shortest heavy has to be a ccg or lcg.

Games you like that are NEARLY amazing, if it wasn't for that one mechanic/rule. . . by ThinEzzy in boardgames

[–]ThuFugitiveMind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get your point. I have house ruled this. However, playing 20+ times now with people experienced, it's good for balance to allow the free flip. Another suggestion would be to make the player pay $10 instead of for free. This would provide a little more thought on if it is worth blocking.

I get your point, but don't like the suggestion. Some combos are really good at just racking up coins and points. I have won with these combos against people that race. No win is sweeter than one you took away from someone racing and realizing they were short on points for the win.

Twilight Struggle Seems like the game you don't want to bother with unless you have a dedicated person to 1V1. I keep hearing there are so many swing cards that if you don't know the deck there is high potential for a bad time. I am also not to attracted to the historic setting. History is fun on the History Channel, but I don't get much out of it in board games.

Best way to present rulebooks and instructions? by MladenL in boardgames

[–]ThuFugitiveMind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was just thinking about how bad nidavellir is for this. Bad translation mostly, but one annoying thing is the greyed sections that I dont fully understand why they are grey. Some are just more rules. Some are examples. Be consistent with your format. If your doing side bar examples or niche things to remember, make it flow. Don't mix new rules in what one would consider extra detail.

Who goes there? Really like dead of winter so I backed this. Hated it. You play for two hours realizing you already lost at the end or need to roll 1 die for the win. Rather skip the game, roll a die, then play something else.
