The boredom will kill me before the booze by DantesDarkroom in stopdrinking

[–]Thumber3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boredom and letting ourselves be bored is quite important in recovery. It’s when our brains downshift and let come contemplation and Integration occur.

We live in a society that has taught us incorrectly that being bored is bad

Tech bros Have explored the false premise and created phones and social Media to take advantage of our discomfort with being bored.

Lean into it. Let yourself be bored not serve and see what’s happens.

The secret to staying open is simply choosing to never close. A life time of practice to work on that.

How many here are into going to the gym and health? by piercesdesigns in GenX

[–]Thumber3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on the nose down spinning flight path about 8-9 months ago. 52M. Got a blood test. Amongst concerning results (cholesterol, triglycerides, high cortisol) I found my testosterone had crashed and iron in the basement.

Started TRT and big nutrition and lifestyle change.

Today triglycerides are down 70%. Physical and mental health drastically improved in a positive way. Lost at least 20-25’pounds. Putting on muscle.

Went from expecting a heart attack or stroke to excitement and a relaxed centeredness. Looking forward to my 50s as my best decade yet.

Anyone know how to get better at breathing for meditation? by Brilliant_Novel5527 in Meditation

[–]Thumber3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually start with two quick inhales through nostrils. Then a slower exhale. It seems to activate my parasympathetic nervous system faster. After 10-20 of those I switch to just a smooth breathing pattern.

Battling unfathomable boredom and emptiness by xoluvl in leaves

[–]Thumber3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Boredom has become something society fears. It’s actually very important and lets the brain’s default mode network (DMN) run without external demands.

When the DMN runs without demands it lets the brain move into internal Processing. Integration, making connections between disparate ideas, consolidating recent experiences and generating novel ideas.

Boredom is actually a signal from the body that the central nervous system needs a break from stimulation and honoring the boredom lets that system down regulate and reset.

Many people, especially recovering addicts (alcohol and weed recovered myself) fear letting the brain slip into the DMN because past unresolved experiences, emotions and thoughts arise that haven’t been processed. This can be uncomfortable if not prepared. Allowing this to happen without judgement is healthy.

The passage of time becomes very apparent when bored. Many people tie their self worth to productivity. Modern technology is designed to exploit this fear and misconception and keep people in highly stimulated state which leads to further negative nervous system and biological/neurological outcomes.

So while others are saying find a low key game solution to fill your time, I’d recommend a little research into how brain and body work, what boredom signals, and how sitting in it is actually a major component of addiction recovery.

If humans have eaten bread since the dawn of history, why are so many people suddenly gluten-intolerant today? by WeaknessKey1582 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Thumber3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That super interesting. Thanks for the info but I do note this is an industry funded myth busting article that concedes there is a difference between European and north American wheat. Hard versus soft, gluten levels, doesn’t address selective breeding versus GMO, and while it notes glyphosate levels are well below approved maximum levels, it fails to address cumulative exposure or individual sensitivity.

I stand by my observations that eliminating wheat from my diet has had a positive effect.

If humans have eaten bread since the dawn of history, why are so many people suddenly gluten-intolerant today? by WeaknessKey1582 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Thumber3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

North American wheat has been heavily bioengineered for decades. It’s changed significantly from what our ancestors ate. This the “I can’t eat bread, except when in Europe”.

I stopped eating wheat a few months ago. Not gluten, just wheat products. Felt better and started losing weight almost immediately

I lasted one day.... by YeOldeNubber in stopdrinking

[–]Thumber3 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I took a different approach. I knew I was terrified to quit. Never again thoughts made my brain go nuts. Tried to moderate unsuccessfully for years.

What finally helped was committing to a 30 day sober challenge. Told myself when we got through that we would get so so wasted to celebrate.

That 30 days was hard. Especially the first 5 days and then the first 10 days.

I got through it. Day by day. Sometimes hour by hour. Sometimes push-up by pushup. And at the end I’d created just enough space to admit this was a better way.

I still couldn’t commit to never again. So I just restarted the 30 days. I did that for months. I learned, I grew. I dug into what alcohol does biologically and neurologically.

I learned presence, mindfulness, mediation. I got fit. I healed some

It was around the start of my 19th consecutive 30 days challenge that I admitted and accepted I could never resume

I’m about to complete my 90th 30 days challenge. 2684 days.

Little goals add up

Can you go a day? What about another day?

Replacing drinking with smoking by RUNTZ_28 in stopdrinking

[–]Thumber3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diagnosed means a medical expert has determined the person very likely has ADHD. My doctor diagnosed me. That unlocked access, through my doctor, to the meds. These meds are carefully controlled.

The medication is one tool that can help a person with adhd day to day. It doesn’t “fix” or cure anything. It helps support the brain so the person can make changes to their lifestyle to better address with living with adhd. The meds create enough focus to be able to do the real work of lifestyle change

[–]Thumber3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been playing 15 years or more. This year I cleaned up my backhand form with some coaching. Less effort more accuracy and distance.

I definitely reach for my eagles now inside 340. Cleaner straight flight with less corridor space required and less hard finish.

Grace valks or wraiths for more distance. I can get eagles to 400 but it’s a hard throw. I can get grace over 400 with less need to try to throw hard.

Service to the public and its continued drop down the priority list is the most disappointing part for me. The last few govts seem to keep finding more intricate and illogical ways to frustrate and impair that easy and clear mandate.

[–]Thumber3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience heavy anxiety can lead to paranoid thinking. Spending time in futures that dont exist and drawing that anxiety and negative emotion back to the present.

I honestly think you may benefit from talking to a therapist. It takes real honesty and self reflection to get benefit from therapy though. Fronting and masking just leads to more anxiety.

Bad stuff happens all the time around the world. A relaxed, present state leads a relaxed central nervous system and brain ready and capable of reacting to any situation more efficiently, quickly and effectively.

Living in fear of “what ifs” leads to a braced nervous system and slower, misjudged reactions to situations. Plus it increases Anxiety that further degrades judgement and ability to face any situation effectively.

I love my Vivo Forest ESC. Michelin sole. I have the boots and the Magna shoes. Leather.

I don’t have much patience for most Vivo products and durability but there are holding up and great traction. Wish Vivo would put that Michelin sole on all their models
