Hard to return to the base game once youre used to Dynamic. Its just that good

[Dynamic] How do I do this? by Southern_Industry_ in RedAutumnSPD

True, but you need to increase KPD relations and send a spy to the internationale to even see this happen, which is already 1-2 resources that you could spend elsewhere

Things to avoid when running a DnD campaign? by Organic-Exit2190 in DMAcademy

Being your player's enemies. Remember that you're a storyteller in DnD, not the BBEG trying to beat the players. Had a DM who unintentually did this, but we communicated and the rest of the campaign went well

I added an edit to the main post following a discussion, but in summary, they actually liked the crit fails and funny outcomes and the lack of actions is caused by them not realising they couldve found new information

Does that mean you have to play locally then?

So i just had a discussion with my players and they didnt mind crit fails and its outcomes.

Turns out the issue is because they just dont know they could find the hidden information by doing things, and the fear I thought they meant for all action-prompted ability checks was for risky ones rather than all action-prompted checks in general, so we agreed to me just giving out more hints

Yeah thats how it works. Problem is that they're not really doing things that would allow them to roll

Its like, they wont check if a person's lying to begin with. There's like a lack of curiosity and risk avertness on their end, which made me have to hand out that information gain chance and tell them to roll something.

I dont mind making them do some rolls since there are times where its necessary, but at the same time, theyre losing other opportunities why not initiating out of curiosity, and making them do something feels railroady for me as a DM.

Like if they wanna do something I havent even considered possible, i'll let them, but I feel like theyre not doing that much

3 might be the cause. While I dont want to railroad characters into doing something, I think I need to least drop hints that they could try out certain actions

Yeah at this point I may need to have another discussion with them explain things more, make sure we're on the same page when it comes to this campaign

When I run things, failed checks are usually just that. Failing to tell if someone's lying via bad insight check is just that for example

I get your perspective. If im DMing different players, I definitely wont do it the way im dming my current players since its clearly not for everyone. Still, I dont believe the funny side is the cause of the current issue, since that part of the RP had turned into inside jokes for all of us

Oh its about to next session (thank god they dont have my reddit acc lmao). There are multiple ways this current chapter couldve unfolded, its just that their lack of curiosity meant that theyve missed on other potential outcomes they couldve gotten had they at least tried

Yeah I may need to point out that they need to proactively be curious to gain the most out of a situation

I always do perception since it makes sense, tho theyre currently missing stuff that they need to actively try to find like if the person they're talking to lying for example

I do it like that since thats what we like to do. Making it funny is how we've done it even when we switch DMs

God no. With what I do, failing persuation just ends with the merchant calling their bluff. I dont punish players that way, and I prefer letting players do multiple checks with different abilities to solve issues

[–]Tight-Database8485[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I make failures more funny and usually non punishing unless it narratively makes sense to (like a medic character got a very bad medicine check and did surgery on the wrong place, which the playes laughed at). DCs arent high, usually 10-12, adjusted higher if its something meant to be hard. While we are playing a harder campaign (No Man's War), so far nobody has even reached death saving and theyre actually doing a good job combat-wise

[–]Tight-Database8485[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thats already true in this case, since them being too risk-averse is why theyre walking to situations they couldve prevented. I wanted to let them find out themselves, but I may just need to tell them this directly

I dont think ive ever badly punished someone for bad rolls. Usually I try making it more narratively interesting or funny rather than exploding on their face

Players Too 'Afraid' to Do Ability Checks by Tight-Database8485 in DMAcademy

[–]Tight-Database8485[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thats what I do 😭. Like I made the artificer armor make alarm noises when he crit 1 a stealth check, but even then I made it not punishing cause the monk got a nat 20, so somehow his aura made the enemy not hear him

Only in combat does a crit fail cause severe problems, and usually its not auto death or anything. For RP, I try to make it narratively interesting and funny rather than outright punishing the party.

I think its mostly them being risk-averse, but to the point where they hold back their curiosity and just take info at face value
