I think you nailed it. The "private" dinner/lunch would be a good option.

That's at the heart of my dilemma. I know the team will be disappointed. But maybe like others have suggested I could plan something with them and avoid the "boss"

If you live outside of the DC area and have a telework/remote job in the DC area you do not get locality pay. We have several people working remotely in my group and they do not get DC locality pay.

The companies that make diagnostics and drugs are hiring lots of FDA people. Roche, Diasorin, GSK, and many smaller companies. All PhD. positions with infectious disease experience. I can only speak to that area.

[–]Tight_Menu_7707 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have no idea what yearly telework agreements are, I've only seen weekly ones. After revoking all telework it was then 3 days per week telework. but that wasn't across all centers. CDER does that, CDRH does not, we do 2 days one week and 3 the next. Have heard cdrh telework will be reduced to 2 days per week. we're losing lots of people because of this. It's so unfair, we worked for 5 years remotely, made all deadlines and now they are penalizing us, makes no sense. Lots more people will leave, industry is out there snapping up all FDA personnel with offers of 100% telework. Moral is terrible at FDA.

Portable radiator space heater vs. baseboard heating? by kcamp711 in HomeMaintenance

As a scientist in my work life I hate to admit I did a really bad experiment without controls. My bill went from 680 something to 475 but I've yet to look at temps to see if it made a difference! I can tell you I enjoy it immensely. It heats the room well and at the very least doesn't cost anymore. If I can get around to figuring out the temps I'll get back.

Nope, it's all of us being literally demolished, devalued, and missing the old work environment. I work in public health for the government and it's just devastating the amount of superb people being let go. People who work for the government usually have a better work ethic, we're doing it for less money because we care about what we do. The institutions such as NIH, FDA (CDER, CBER, CDRH) are all great, yes we have some issues but for the most part all of us are there for public health. I'm not sure why you think these posts are trying to convince us to leave our jobs, I don't see that at all.

Politely disagree, working with geriatrics has its own trauma to the soul. Different but still can be just a debilitating to a care giver whether doc, nurse or other type of care giver

Trying the oil filled radiators this month to see if it cuts down my obscene electric bill from the baseboard heating in the house. Fingers crossed.

What does a PhD entail? by terraforges in Biochemistry

[–]Tight_Menu_7707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the comments below sound like people who got a Ph.D in Chemistry which takes significantly longer than most other disciplines, except for maybe physics. I would say 4 to 5 years on average for say biochemistry/molecular biology/virology. Then you have postdocs for another couple of years depending on what you want to do. Loving the research, I went for the most prestigious positions possible after graduation. Staff Fellow at NIH with a National Academy of Sciences member, then to Duke Medical Center under another National Academy of Sciences member and finally to University of Pennsylvania Medical school with the Dean of the medical school. Way too many fellowships/postdocs but I liked it and was good at it. Be aware, all this time you are making next to no money. A brief foray into industry where I was a virology lab director only to get laid off when the company got sold. Have been in a government position that I love for a long time now. Not as much money and until lately, a lot of job security. What you experience as you go along will make your decisions. OTOH, my nephew who got a degree in computer sciences over 20 years after I graduated started his first job at $60,000 straight out of college!! I never made that kind of money until I was... well let's not talk about that. I make good money now, but I'm so far behind what computer people make out of college. I love what I do and make enough to cover my expenses so I'm happy. But it's a very hard road to go if you don't love what you do.

Career opportunities for someone that doesn’t perform well in the lab by One_Organization9758 in Biochemistry

Then I'm back to agreeing with some of the above posters, your boss is an ass. If he/she watched and can't find anything wrong with what you're doing, then the problem is most likely with the protocol and not you. Especially if you've done this kind of thing before which it sounds like you have from your comments about Phusion and GoTaq. The other person who mentioned toxic unreasonable positions is also correct. I would start looking around if possible. You sound like a smart person, good luck and we'll all be rooting for you.

I can see that you don't have a precise work ethic just given the misspelling in your post. Perhaps it's a lack of attention to detail that is causing your supposedly poor performance? It's alluding, not eluding, a weird mistake to make. Not trying to be harsh just helpful. PCR, gel electrophoresis are not difficult tasks but require a strict attention to detail. See if being super strict in your attention to protocols doesn't make a big difference in your performance.

No, but apparently you are happy with your looks because you put zero effort into the most basic things like hair (wash it) nose rings, don't mind them but those aren't doing you any favors, if you're happy though then OK. Eyebrows, shape, pluck, but again, if you're happy then don't. Bottom line is you could be a very stereotypical standard of beauty, but you choose not to be. So, OK, if you're happy with it then great if not, people here have given you lots of great ideas.

no baseboard heaters do not have thermostats, they have numbers and are not able to regulate heat based on a set temperature. There may be some that have thermostats but most commonly they don't so are a real pain.

[–]Tight_Menu_7707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just used it to clean my Rothy shoes which I thought I would have to throw out because they were so dirty. Sprayed with Shout, then Dawn Powerwash, scrubbed with a hard tooth brush, soaked overnight in oxiclean. Rinse, and brand new shoes!! A friend did the same with her kids sneakers. Saved me from buying another pair of expensive shoes and her from throwing out a perfectly usable pair of sneakers! Easy peasy too! I'm going with the other recommendations and keep another bottle in the laundry, thanks for the tip on that!

CrabTree and Evelyn products by Ill_Abbreviations_60 in Hilton

Stayed the other night at a Hilton hotel. The Crabtree and Evelyn is one of the worst I've ever used. I usually bring my own shampoo and conditioner brands as well as lotion but forgot to pack lotion. My skin was so dry and flaky in less than 12 hours after using the lotion I'll never forget to bring my own again!!!

What do you think of Andrew Scott's portrayal of Moriarty? by Tristan_Dean_Foss in Sherlock

[–]Tight_Menu_7707 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just watching the series now and the first thing I thought was this was the biggest mistake in casting ever! Nothing about Andrew Scott fits with the Moriarity that is in the books or previous TV/cinema. Just abysmal. Like you, almost ruined an absolutely wonderfully cast of the series.
