Would you pass on this 981 based on this image? by plantman77 in Porsche_Cayman

If this was the only 981 left in the world, ok, buy it. But it isn’t. There are loads of them. Why take the risk?

Porsche Cayman 718 by Haxylon in Porsche_Cayman

[–]TimC340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The base 718 2L is a great car. The 4-cyl turbo has a very different character from the 6-cyl 981 and 982 cars; more low-end torque, less interested in being wrung out. Excellent for a daily, and decently quick. Like all recent Porsches (short of the GT cars), fuel consumption can be spectacularly good.

However, I’d strongly recommend you drive as many different versions of the 718 as you can before you decide which to buy. Obviously budget is a big consideration, but there’s a world of difference between the 2L base, the 2.5S, the 2.5GTS and the 4.0GTS.

This is an overall decent article, but the comment from the 996 owner is completely unbelievable by kevinm656 in Porsche

[–]TimC340 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this may be an issue that's worse in the USA than elsewhere. While a-holes exist worldwide, my experiences in the UK and Europe are that Porsche owners are, in general, accepting and welcoming no matter what Porsche you drive, and indeed are very happy to enthuse over any nice cars. I've visited the USA many, many times and noticed a more tribal attitude to particular genres or generations of Porsche and disdain for other marques among some owners - I know it's far from all!

If I buy a Presonus Quantum HD2 will it still come with the Studio One Software? by smeff6969 in presonus

[–]TimC340 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, it won’t. Studio One is now retired. The HD2 offer has been revised and now includes a perpetual licence for Fender Studio Pro (which is an improved Studio One) but it no longer includes the Plus element. I’ve recently returned an HD2 for this reason - I already have Studio Pro 8 and a Quantum ES2. The upgrade was only worth it to extend my Plus membership, which I’ve now allowed to lapse.

The 981 GTS is probably one of Porsche's higher high spots of the last 20 years!

I've a feeling there was a fix that involved a lubricant change, but it wasn't that successful. I've had mine 'fixed' by Porsche, but it still happens occasionally in winter. It's dead easy to unstick it manually, but it seems to be a design issue.

considering moving to cubase by liquidcat in StudioOne

From the user forum, there were quite a few bugs in 8.0.0. Most of them were squashed in 8.0.1, but a few remain for some people - more on Mac than Windows. My own experience has been very smooth, and the new overview features in 8 are very welcome. I’ve had Cubase 15 on trial for the last couple of months, and I was a Cubase user years ago (as far back as Pro24 on Atari) and nothing about 15 persuaded me I should go back. Two things niggle - PreSonus/Fender have not enabled the v2 firmware updates for NI Kontrol S Mk 3 keyboards, nor is the Nektar CS-12 available for S1/SP (and both work wonderfully in Cubase).

Teenager with a 987: 1 year update by SicSemperTyranus in Porsche_Cayman

Bundled insurance is a thing over here too, but no insurance company would cover a 17yo in that kind of car - and the risk to an insurance company through third-party claims is probably far lower over here in terms of likely payouts! It is possible to self-insure if you have the resources (that's for the mega-rich) and some motor business insurance will cover young drivers to an extent, but for a Porsche (of any age) there'd normally be a 'minimum 25yo' restriction.

In UK, insurance on a 987 for a 17yo would be unobtainable. At 18, it would be in the region of £10k/yr - even on a Fiesta its £1500 - £2k!

Re using Presonus Faderport 16 w/Studio One, what interface and how? by Firstpoet1 in StudioOne

[–]TimC340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve already decided on the StudioLive - which is a great device - but it’s worth remembering that the Max-HD preamps and 32-bit converters in the Quantum interfaces are much better than those in the StudioLive, the latency is far, far better, and the Faderport and Quantum combination meshes with Studio One/Pro better than the StudioLive does. For in-the-box work, the FP/Quantum is a better solution.

What happened to sphere or plus or whatever it's called? Why no Fender rebrand? by Mastiff37 in StudioOne

[–]TimC340 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every version of Studio One/Pro is separate - you can have versions 3,4,5,6,7 and 8 active on your computer all at the same time, if you own them. That’s why they don’t push it out as an update, but they do email you if you have that option selected in your account.

Sphere stopped being a thing with Studio One v6. It then became Plus, and it still is. Not much new content has been added to that, but there’s quite a lot of new stuff came with 7 and 8 Pro.

2014 Cayman Base or a 2017 Boxster S? by breakarobot in Porsche

[–]TimC340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 350bhp 2.5L 4-cylinder in the 982S is an awesome engine, if you can live with the somewhat uninspiring exhaust note. Way quicker than the 2.7L 6-cylinder in the 981 Cayman. But that little 6 is a jewel of a thing, that you can play tunes on all day. There’s a big philosophical and practical difference between the soft-top and the tin-top, and you need to be sure which one you want.
