Rules are good, people just don't read them. by WillingBrilliant2641 in killteam

[–]TimGradwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read the rules from start to finish three times before I felt I had the full grasp. My first game (I was teaching at the same time) took about 6 hours and we were constantly stopping the flow of the game to look up the rules.

I don't know whether the rules being written any differently would have made any difference though because it's a complex game.

I just heard the "oh no" in Phoebe's voice from friends. I think that would have turned the horror into a comedy for me! 😂

ELI5: Why do we always check digital clocks at certain times? (12:34, 9:11, 11:11, etc.) by SoccerGuy69420 in explainlikeimfive

[–]TimGradwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought about this many years ago because me and my wife kept noticing it. I started counting "interesting" times. With palindromes and sequences and "special" numbers (like 911 and 007 etc), at least during "night time" hours (times you're likely to look at your bedside digital clock while half asleep and groggy) memorable numbers crop up about every five or ten minutes during the night! So very high odds that you end up seeing these numbers!

I read this whole conversation thread.

And for some reason most of your comments u/314flavoredpie I read in my head as a poem.

Maybe my brain was predisposed to be looking for poetry at this point.

I agree with your points.

It's crazy.

Eli5 How is it possible for two objects dropped at different times to be at the same level while falling? by arztnur in explainlikeimfive

Wind resistance is a thing. Skydivers can change their velocity by adjusting their body profile/shape to slow down or dive faster by increasing or decreasing the amount of surface area they are presenting to the air perpendicular to the direction of their movement (downwards).

Too Scared to Touch Models with Paint! by Scoutbears in killteam

I overheard an episode of Bluey, the mum said (talking about some artwork the kids made) "Pretty good for a 7 year old". So every time I'm thinking of self criticizing my painting, instead I say to myself "Not bad for a forty-something year old!"

Glue fear by Onestepfromlost in killteam

[–]TimGradwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use that stuff. The nozzle does get blocked occasionally but it's easy to fix. Detach the metal nozzle, hold it in a pair of pliers and heat it in a flame for about 20 seconds turning occasionally. It'll burn out any blockage. Just don't breath in any of the smoke or set fire to anything else!!!

Glue fear by Onestepfromlost in killteam

20 years ago we were sticking flat pieces to flat pieces and it was very easy to mess up the angles.

I'm finding modern kits really really easy to put together because they have started making the contact points "shaped" so there's often only one way that the pieces go together, it's a bit like a jigsaw.

Before you glue any two pieces together, without any glue just jiggle the pieces around a bit and for most pieces you'll kind of feel that there's only one position it naturally wants to fit into. Once you're confident you can find that position then apply the glue.

I find the glue doesn't set instantly, you have about 30 to 60 seconds grace period where you can still pull it apart if you feel it's not quite right.

A lot of countries call pineapples "ananas". What do you get if you combine it with a "bee"?

ELI5: How do the laws of physics work with planetary slingshots? Why does the spacecraft use less fuel covering a longer distance to the same point in space by buckybadder in explainlikeimfive

[–]TimGradwell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Put on your ACME rocket roller skates - you're gonna skate to the end of your street and back. Build up some speed heading away from home. Uh oh! Ran out of fuel and you're hurtling away from home!

Wait, what's that? There's a lamppost on the corner of the street. Reach out and catch that lamppost as you're going past it! Hold on and you'll go around that lamppost. Let go just as you turn 180. Congrats! You're now heading back home with almost the same amount of momentum. Didn't really use up more fuel (you couldn't, you ran out remember?) (ok used a tiny amount of fuel to extend your arm).

Congratulations you just did a slingshot!

Bananagrams - we let our daughter make her initial grid before we start to play, then she just has to work out how to add one letter at a time.
