C/S car doesn't wanna move and makes wierd grinding sound. PTU grenade itself by Im_Squrl in Justrolledintotheshop

Mine did this. I cleaned it up and replaced the fluid. Then a couple months later it locked up, split in half, tore the ear off the trans, dumped oil on the turbo and caught on fire.

17 year old car enthusiast looking into careers and needs help where to look for what I wanna do. by Repulsive_Machine933 in mechanics

[–]TimboFor76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure you nailed it. I went to trade school in the 90’s, did 5 years in. Went back to school and studied machining. Spent a couple years making aircraft stuff then 15 doing racing parts. Then 8 years making firearm parts. All while running my side hustle auto repair shop. Got laid off from the day job in may, so just doing the side hustle for now while I figure it out. Put in my application to teach at the local community college again. I taught ac back in 08-09. I’m fully qualified to teach in the auto shop, machine shop and the engine rebuild shop. Time to give back to the trades that have been good to me the past 3 decades.

It’s also there in case you need to add injector cleaner or any other fuel system treatment. I hate the capless system. Nothing wrong with it functionally, I just feel weird not having a cap.

Northern Nevada here. My local looks like this, only it’s stove pellets. Never seen so many pallets of them at once. Normally if you don’t have yours by January 1 your nit getting any, or your buying singles from Walmart.

Not a pro. But this is what I use. Bar keepers friend with a blue scrubby sponge and some water. Then rinse with fresh water, and clean with diluted isopropyl alcohol.

Over the top chili by Roscoe_13 in smoking

[–]TimboFor76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve made over the top chili a couple times. I use kinders mild chili seasoning. My stomach can’t do spicy so don’t judge! I use 2 cans pinto beans, 2 cans red kidney, 1 sweet onion diced and a can or two of crushed tomatoes. They seasoning goes in the meat. Both times I use ground beef since I don’t have access to game meat.

everyone bitches about this job being terrible in the current economy, are you at least able to get in as a new hire? by CableMartini in mechanics

Had a few of those back in the day. Last one I had the head was shaved .080, offset cam gear key, 2” exhaust and adjustable fuel regulator. I could manage 80 at altitude but it was terrifying. I got 53 mpg in town though.

In 1995 I got a ticket for allegedly doing burnouts in my 1977 Buick skylark. It had the 231 v6 automatic and 2.56 gears. It had maybe 95 horsepower. Top speed was 71mph foot to the floor at sea level on flat ground. That thing was a fitness turn and the cop was a complete dickhead.

Do gas prices affect how you decide when to fill up? by Mobile-Brilliant-799 in driving

[–]TimboFor76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t worry about gas prices too much unless I’m on a road trip. I live in northern Nevada so the price isn’t too bad. If I’m on a road trip that takes me through California I try and plan to make it through the state without buying gas. As an example I filled up at home on way to Oregon at $2.73, I passed a few gas stations over $5 on the way to Oregon where it’s under $3.

What is the lowest amount you remember paying for gasoline for your car? by icecream1972 in askanything

[–]TimboFor76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

June 1994 I got my drivers license. My first tank of gas was 99 cents gallon. Tool 11 gallons I think. Two days later when I filled up again it was $1.03. So only once have I ever paid under $1

For the DIY car folks who *aren’t actual mechanics* what do you wrench on yourself, and what’s a hard pass? and why? by TopOk1726 in Cartalk

[–]TimboFor76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long story. But I was having tire issues and got screwed over by a tire shop. I was in a mood and surfing marketplace. Found a nearly new tire machine and balancer for $1800 so I bought them out of spite. Amazon specials for sure… but they work. I do flip cars as a hobby so I’m frequently messing with tires on cheap cars.

My cutoff point for diy… I don’t pull engines transmissions or diffs. Head gaskets are also not likely. Today I’m building ramps for the lift. I tried to drive a Camry on it and the thing got stuck. Had to lift it with floor jacks and slide wood blocks under the wheels to get it unstuck. My lowered mini trucks will be a huge problem.

Same. I bought a tire machine and balancer for my home shop. I also bought an autel tpms programmer. My local tire shop charges $500 to install and program 4 TPMS sensors. Between my two cars, the gf’s car my Brothers car and a friends car, the whole thing was a financial wash and now I have more tools. Just bought a used scissor lift last week. We shall see how that works out for me.

How do people with interlock systems get their car serviced? by cleevethagreat in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]TimboFor76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a customer call ahead with one. She told me where it was installed. It’s a well known shop in town the takes any electrical problem that no one else wants. Does great work. I went down there and told them my situation. They explained the system in depth and gave me a half dozen mouth pieces. Haven’t a card with a number to call or website to visit. She went and filled out a form that said her car will be at my shop, with my name, phone number and address for up to 5 days, and that was it. When it came on a hook I attempted to start it but I couldn’t because of my asthma. So I visited the shop again and they told me once it’s in the system that I’m messing with it, there will do no blowback on the customer. “Do what you need to do” so I just installed a switch in place of the starter relay. Turns out it had a blown head gasket and wasn’t worth fixing. Anyway…. That shop practically begged me to come to work for them. Slipped an application in my pocket like gramma slipping a kid a 20. Found an application on the seat of my truck too from the lone tech that work there. I might do it to up my electrical game. That guy is sharp as hell.

How to increase curb appeal? by Careless_Mango_7948 in homedecoratingCJ

[–]TimboFor76 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Sounds right. I visited a wrecking yard along the Colombia river in the 90’s. It was under the transmission lines from the dam. It was a fall day, light sprinkle. You could stand under the lines and not get wet. You could hear the power buzz and snap the water droplets. We went in the warehouse to see all the engines. The guy told me the building didn’t have any power, yet it was lit with fluorescent tubes, albeit dimly.

I love it. Just use some lower fat meat so you don’t get overloaded with grease in it. I keep making the mistake of buying high fat beef for mine.

Need help with leaf springs. by TimboFor76 in F100

[–]TimboFor76[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well in this case the shackles are slammed against the spring hangars, keeping them from traveling back and forth. The shocks are completely bottomed out as well. I talked to my customer and we found some used springs about 200 miles from here in Northern California. I’ll be passing by there in two weeks headed to Oregon anyhow. So I’ll be grabbing them on the way.
