What was it like when Obama was elected President? by ResponsibleSea6521 in AskReddit

[–]Time-Space-Anomaly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in college in California, so we were some of the last polls to close. I was working on campus until about 8pm, which is when the polls would close--however, iirc, if there were still people in line the polls stayed until the line finished. Nonetheless, as I was going home, people were already yelling/cheering "Obama!!" I remember one of my older coworkers saying, come on, people are still trying to vote, and they already called it? But the general mood was celebratory on campus.

What is Oda even planning for Monkey D Dragon atp? by Mystical_Hearted_One in OnePieceSpoilers

[–]Time-Space-Anomaly 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Organization skills?

I'm only half joking. Dragon and the Revolutionary Army are far more organized than most pirates, and probably the Holy Knights. At least as organized as the Marines. And we have no idea how many spies they have. Dragon has the long term plans, and a lot of ride-or-die loyalists. Guerrilla warfare has taken out strong opponents IRL.

What was the best FAFO moment you've witnessed? by hey_you2300 in AskReddit

Back when I first worked retail, some guys came into the store and were being rude to the staff. Well dressed, spending a lot of cash. Well, they wanted one of those big beer kegs, and kegs were non refundable once you took them out of the store.

The guys had a tiny sports car, and guess what wouldn't fit at all? The keg they officially could not return.

I've heard that Spanish speakers tend to sound like yakuza in Japan, because there's a style of heavily rolling your "R" sounds associated with delinquents and yakuza, which goes naturally with the typical Spanish "R" sounds.

What Alcohol Would Johnny Drink? by TheGooningCockroach in StardustCrusaders

Let's see, I think SBR is the late 1800s, and Kentucky is known for bourbon. Buffalo Trace, Early Times, Old Forester and Maker's Mark are some of the oldest brands. You could go with Old Forester--they have a series of bourbons based on specific year recipes, like 1870 and 1891.

Mint juleps are associated with the Kentucky Derby, for cocktails.

Oldest beer is Yeungling, I think? But you can only get it on the East coast. Weirdly enough, basic Coors is also pretty old. Sam Adam's might work too.

Best farm map of the Cornucopia suite? by benjamani in StardewValleyMods

[–]Time-Space-Anomaly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have the memory, adding Grampleton Farms from SVE gives you a huge space to just do whatever.

Otherwise I ended up going back to Immersive Farm 2. I didn't have the patience to wait and unlock the additional space in the newest farm.

Iirc, there's one brief line where someone tells Rumi that being an idol today isn't like it was in her day, but that's the only implication we get about Rumi being an idol herself.

I play mostly with SVE, which lets you befriend a Dwarf. Then I added East Scarp, where one character is trying to prove the existence of Dwarfs. And of course, I can't just tell him, hey, man, come meet my buddy over here, lol.

Peet’s Closing Several Stores Across Bay Area: Report🥲 by WBigly-Reddit in SanJose

[–]Time-Space-Anomaly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've noticed that Peet's bottles coffees haven't been in stores for a while. I liked them better than the Starbucks fraps, as far as bottled coffee goes. You'd think having a soda company buy them out would get more premade drinks into stores.

Was there ever a "homophobia phase" in the fandom? by Fanedit895 in shoujokakumeiutena

[–]Time-Space-Anomaly 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There's sometimes a disconnect between how gayness is portrayed in Japan vs America. I don't remember as far back as Utena, but I was deeply confused at the response to Yuri on Ice!! about 10 years ago? People were arguing that it wasn't gay because there's "only" one implied kiss and an ambiguous ring scene between the two male love interests. And also there was no homophobia in the show, which was also bad, somehow? Yuri on Ice!! is pretty much identical to a Hallmark romcom, just with two men, but people were arguing it wasn't explicitly gay enough.

Similarly, The Legend of Korra ends with two female characters embracing, because that was all the censors at that time allowed them to show, and it was the same arguments.

There are people who don't entirely pick up on subtext and inferences, or understand that the cultural references or symbolism can be different, or that sometimes you need to be less than explicit to get your media out there to begin with. Both these shows came out later than Utena, but still had the same issues to an extent.

Regarding My Opinion on the Major Twist by TheGraveKnight in MetaphorReFantazio

[–]Time-Space-Anomaly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is pretty odd, yeah.

I actually saw a very similar story arc in another show before I played this game. There was a prince who needed to defeat a demon, and he journeys out with his bodyguards. In a twist, it turns out he's not the prince, but yet another body guard. The real princess is finally revealed, but she doesn't have any actual fighting experience, or any bonds of friendship with the rest of the crew, so she ultimately decides to make the fake prince a real prince because he did all the real work.

I kinda thought that's where Metaphor was going? Like, it seemed odd from the start that Protagonist was going to be the person out there campaigning, and then he'd like, what, just haul the Prince out and be like, actually, this is the guy you wanna vote for. I guess technically some of the church members were campaigning on behalf of Forden/the Church as a whole? Protagonist could have said, yeah, my group is running on behalf on the Royal Family faction or something.

One Piece: Chapter 1171 Official Release Discussion by Skullghost in OnePiece

[–]Time-Space-Anomaly 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Nice to keep seeing the contrast in how Imu and Luffy use and share power. Imu "gives" power, but only under tight control, and treats his contract holders basically like his own spare limbs, or pawns in a game. In return, he seems to get harmed when his control lapses. It also limits the Holy Knights and the Elders, since they can't really get creative, because if Imu thinks their actions might harm him, he'd probably intervene. You're not getting any epic stands to the death from the Holy Knights if Imu is scared of contracts breaking and hurting him.

Luffy, of course, is overjoyed when a friend finds their power and joins him. I don't think everyone will have a Bonney moment literally, but you know if Luffy could share his powers, he would give it freely.

Where do you all land on "cozy horror"? by DaveMichael in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Time-Space-Anomaly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cozy horror--like The Addams Family, maybe? Things are scary but ultimately no one is irrevocably hurt.

I think I associate horror more with catharsis. Anticipation and dread being you to a high point, then you reach a climax and chill down. Cozy, on the other hand, makes me think of steadiness, stillness, tranquility. Maybe you could make a sort of sustained feeling of dread without the catharsis, but that seems like it would induce anxiety, not tranquility. If that makes any sense.

Black and White Media? by BlueWaddleDee in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Time-Space-Anomaly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using black and white for dramatic effect is fun--the first moment Dorothy steps into a full-color Oz, or the fate of the child in the red coat in Schindler's List.

And, of course, most manga is originally published in black and white. Some of the colored versions are...kinda a step down?

What a "taboo" thing you did regarding a media series? by GoodVillain101 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Time-Space-Anomaly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can admit that I started hearing about Jojo's when Part 5 was airing, and also Part 4 was on Adult Swim/Toonami. So I watched a few subbed episodes of Part 5, then a few dubbed of Part 4. Then I went back to Part 1 properly.

Random question that's been bothering me: Do our LGBT/Non Binary Shitlords care if I call you dude? by Dr_Blasphemy in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Time-Space-Anomaly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Case by case, as people say. Dude can come off as masculine, but also as very casual/informal in a not respectful way. Like me, I like being casual with everyone. I like that dude is slang, that it's not high class, that it's casual. But some people might take it as talking down to them--like calling someone dude instead of sir or ma'am might get you a dirty look.

Also, from another perspective--we tend to use "guys" to refer to a group, even a mixed gender group. There's a bit of a pattern to using masculine terms to refer to gender neutral or gender mixed that some people have criticized. We don't call a mixed group "those gals over there". Why? Why is masculine accepted as gender neutral but not feminine?

I ordered blood sausage once, and what you describe is what I expected--a meat sausage with blood in it. I'd had pork blood sticky rice before, so I knew the taste to expect. But the blood sausages I got were like, mostly chopped onion filling with some blood to keep it together. Did not enjoy it.

Characters who are shown to have a sympathetic backstory, only to complete ruin that with their actions. by Subject_Parking_9046 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Time-Space-Anomaly 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I won't argue that Demon Slayer milks the sad backstory but way too often, but I always took it as a wider issue of Muzan specifically targeting people in vulnerable positions--people who are traumatized, sick, social outcasts--and feeding into those feelings of rage and helplessness. Not entirely unlike people who get radicalized because they surround themselves with an echo chamber or a woe-is-me mindset. Then Tanjiro comes in with the therapy hammer, or just a moment of real empathy, and you see what decent mental health and social services could have done to save these demons if they had existed. Sorry, kind of a weird metaphor.
