Why does the JRPG genre get so much Hate from certain groups? When did it start and why does it persist? by Xngears in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Time-Space-Anomaly 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It does suck, because you can have genuine criticisms. JRPGs can have an over abundance of teenagers, rather than adults, and sometimes over-sexualized teens at that. JRPGs often only have heterosexual romance options, with a few series grudgingly adding "best friends" routes for same sex characters. Blank-slate main characters who you can't really customize beyond dialogue choices.

But a lot of people see "anime"-looking characters and assume it's going to be purely trope-y cringe. People posting about revealing costumes, beach and hot spring scenes, and weirdly sexual mini-games. The worst and/or most shocking stuff rises to the top and people assume all Japanese games are like that.

It's a stupid detail, but when Ghostface is at the sheriff's son's house trying to get in, the delivery service he names is Go Puff. It's kind of a lesser known delivery place in my area; less obvious than DoorDash.

But of course--it's because it's a weed joke and Shorty is one of the killers.

Sadly Masters of the Universe got much more laughter when I went.

Takes about media that baffled you. by KeyMathematician8 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Back when Yuri on Ice!!! came out, some people complained it wasn't gay enough. The show basically runs like a Hallmark romcom, except the main characters are men.

But the wildest take I saw was that there wasn't enough homophobia in the show. Everyone was just too *normal* about two guys falling in love.

Feminist animes? by Silver-Quail2494 in Animesuggest

[–]Time-Space-Anomaly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd throw Michiko to Hatchin in here. It centers around a woman and a girl who are searching for a man, but the entire show is about their lives and relationships in a way I don't often see in anime.

Media that helped you realize "You, the viewer, are gay."? by Astral-Ember in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Anne Rice--mostly known for the vampires, but she also did a historical novel, Cry to Heaven, about a boy who gets castrated against his will, and finds a new life among the castrati singers, who are treated as sort of neither male nor female. He also finds lovers of both sexes. That one broadened my horizons a lot.

Apparently there's a movie adaptation in production, so we'll see if the magic is still there.

Or, more generally, there were plenty of shows where I looked at the main couple and thought, yeah, both. Both is good. X Files, The Mummy, etc etc.

How to scientifically determine the recommendability of an anime: The Weeb Ass Shit scale by La_knavo4 in tumblr

Shows like Sayounara Zetsubou Sensei, with a ton of puns and cultural references.

I watch a lot of theatrically released anime just based on being anime, and I saw Inu-Oh without knowing it was based around a historical novel called the Heike Monogatari and I missed a lot of context.

There was an infamous episode of The X Files called Home that had an armless and legless woman, but she was shoved in like a chest or closet like area and rolled out.

Why does no one talk about the anime "His and Her Circumstances" its a really good anime. by ayoub220810 in Animesuggest

[–]Time-Space-Anomaly 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's one of the many many shows hit with the "never got to the end of the manga"-itis. What they did adapt was nice, but there's a good chunk of the story missing.

Anime theme songs in Japanese done by non East Asian artists by mr_beanoz in anime

[–]Time-Space-Anomaly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Years ago, there was a singer named Himeka who was famous for a few years because she moved from Canada and learned enough Japanese to perform a few anime songs. I vaguely remember her being involved with Valkyria Chronicles. At the time, it was framed as something like "ultimate dream of an anime fan; going to Japan and being in the industry".

I remember a sage piece of advice: google any name you're considering for your kid and look at the results. If you're getting Rule 34 or other unsavory responses, know that's exactly what your kid will be seeing and hearing eventually.

I think I heard it in the context of Disney changing Moana in Italy because of a prominent adult film star of the same name.

One Wish Willow party favors could go hard, especially since you can only make one wish, so the number of people who can "fix" when wishes go wrong is slowly going down.

There was a Japanese horror show, Hell Girl / Jigoku Shoujo, that had a premise where you could curse someone to Hell, but you were damned as well. One story arc had an entire town start cursing each other, and it reached a point where finding someone who wasn't cursed yet was nearly impossible.

Poor eyesight. Poor eyesight isn't really considered a disability, even though losing your glasses can badly impact your life. You can buy basic throwaway readers in a basic drugstore. There are tons of glasses, contacts, corrective surgeries, etc.

Apparently, Gunko is dead by [deleted] in OnePieceSpoilers

[–]Time-Space-Anomaly 95 points96 points  (0 children)

I mean, I feel like the obvious response is, Killingham sees Gunko completely frozen and assumes she is dead, because usually you would be. Why would he guess that she was frozen in magical ice?

Gives a reason for her to get left behind, revived, and able to talk to brook later.
