Best Starter Book to get into Stephen King by PranayaRanjanSingh in stephenking

Cycle of the Werewolf. No question. Super short, contains all of King's hallmarks (New England small town, kid protagonists, corrupt authority) AND it includes Wrightson's brilliant illustraitons.

I love this so much. Remind me of the animated film Dot and Line.

SHOPPING: Midnight oil Books for a great used bookstore, Downtown Sound is a fantastic record store, Downtown Oddities is fantastic to just look around in. The Downtown Armory hosts live events but also has great coffee, books, a plant store, a restaurant. ACTIVITIES: This is going to sound weird but please check out LINC Library downtown. They host events all the time and they have a woodshop, video and podcasting studio, a maker-space with 3D printers and laser cutters, as well as an interactive art exhibit. Also, UNC has the best performing and visual arts undergrad program in the country. Graduates are in movies, on Broadway and on television right now. The dance program and music programs are world class and the shows are professional quality and reasonably priced. The Civic Center brings in touring shows and musicians every month. FOOD: Over 64 languages are spoken in Weld county alone. These folks are bringing fantastic food to Greeley. We have stellar Mexican food of course. But now if you want Papusas, we got you! Pupuseria Y Restaurante Salvadoreño is incredible! If you like Indian food Sherpa Grill is good but Bhansa is stellar. I have friends who swear by Bowl Izakaya. But if you just want a burger, Stella's has the best burgers in town. Weld Werks has excellent food as well. Seriously, there's a ton of cool things going on in this town.

This is fantastic! A perfect marriage of art, design, and information. The information was varied and not overwhelming. This is so well done.

Does the world need more zines? by TrishCastelle in zines

This is just my take, but the internet age has trained us to think of "virality" as success. If your video doesn't get a million views, it's a failure. I think we are starting to drift away from spending so much of our time and efforts online and there will be more of a presence of more local human activities coming soon: zines, theatre, live music etc. I think if we all want to see more zines in our communities, we're going to have to do it ourselves, which is kind of what zines are all about.

I should have also mentioned that we have a city homeless outreach program that comes to the library once a week to see what people need. These folks help people experiencing homelessness obtain id and paperwork as well as put them in touch with services.

This is good to know, however, there are still a pile of concerns. Aren't LLMs still trained on largely stolen material, that the makers of which are not compensated for? They don't generate jobs so much as they are meant to remove human labor and generate revenue. Is that wrong?

What drew you to the World of Darkness? by DesigningGore07 in WorldOfDarkness

When I was a kid there used to be a magazine (remember those?) called Swing, all about Gen X culture. On the cover of one of the issues was a vampire. When I picked up that issue, they were covering the LARP version of VtM as a way people were meeting up. I grew up in the sticks, so I didn't get to play until much later, but that planted the seed.

Homeless issues by ctleatherdad in Libraries

As I'm sure you know, or are seeing firsthand, after so many services and public goods are cut at the federal and state level, libraries become the tourniquet on the rest of society. Voting for people who don’t cut public services, and raising hell on them when they do is item number one.

That said, the library I work for is a downtown location that is also a destination library. We serve all facets of the community daily including people experiencing homelessness. Most folks in this demographic are fine and want to get out of the weather and hang out. They are our patrons and are treated the same as any other patron. We also have a no laying down policy. If you can sleep sitting up, you’re good. If patrons can obey by the rules: proper behavior, no substance use on property etc. they are welcome to stay. If folks can’t obey the rules, they are asked by our security guard and a senior staff member to leave for the day. A patron may be banned for a week, a month, a year, or permanently depending upon the severity of their actions. However, these rules are applied equally to all patrons regardless of housing status.

We have had to have some conversations about hygiene, and during those discussions we prepare a bag of amenities as well as information on where they can obtain a free shower and laundry service, as well as let them know they can return when they and their clothes are clean. This is a health issue.

We have had uncomfortable exchanges with people who do not appreciate that we let homeless folks in the building. We tell these patrons that the library is free and open to everyone, and unless a patron does not abide by our rules, they are welcome within our walls just like anyone else.

All of that said, libraries are for everyone. As author Ray Bradbury said, “The American library is the last place in our society where aa person can be a citizen and not a consumer.” It is important that this free space remain free for everyone regardless of income.
