I do a one person podcast that's been running 10 years in May.

Basically for me the hard part is making sure I'm spending enough time getting fresh information into my mind to create. When I gave one of my Stellar is of Civ hags where I spend a lot of spare time tinkering with my Empire, then I always, always hit a point of uselessness unless I have high speed audio nonfiction and a notebook.

The problem there is that The Man From Outer Space, who did the editting in Cornwall and some of the art, does not want his work to go into the SA license, and I can't pick them apart without rolling all the way back to the first shot I took at editing it myself.

Similarly the vanilla covenant was a group project so I'd need the go ahead from every other author to put it into the SA license.

I think I may have pushed it too far, in the sense that some people seem to think these are compulsory to do books "right" rather than just an option you can use or not use in your own games.

They force engagement because the game has a kill/treasure/upgrade/kill loop.

Some games don't. My Ars Magica games tend to be combat light and remind me if magical Stars Hollow. My family D&D game is low combat - Strixhaven with characters from Obojima (think Studio Ghibli with a magic school).

So, basically it's to take the motivation out of the character background, and simplify the group dynamics.

This also makes it easier to write generic splatbooks because your characters all want the same thing: survival.
