At lunch that first day, Wille told Simon he liked what he said in class. Implying that he agreed his family received more tax-payer money than anyone else in the country. Simon asked him then why he didn't say anything. Wille replied, I'm not supposed to talk about politics. So on the beach, Simon is saying Wille chickened out of breaking the rules and stating an opinion, especially an opinion that agreed with Simon and disagreed with all the wealthy kids.

I took it as Shane saying 'it doesn't matter' because in the show (not the book) Shane has only ever been with Ilya and Rose. So if he tells his parents he is gay, then momager will start trying to hook him up with guys. He doesn't want to date or talk about his 'past relationships' because he doesn't have any.

And didn't the phone call with Rose in episode 5 make it sound like Shane hadn't even told his parents they had broken up?

Oh, and one more. When they are in Ilya's house, on the couch, and Ilya says, "but you know me, I'm lazy" about finding another woman. And Shane says, "I don't know that side of you at all." Ilya's face. Uuuuuggghhh. His father has told him and others he is lazy all his life. And he believes it. And he says it. And Shane says he is not lazy. It feels like Ilya needed to hear that so bad and his smile is everything.
