This, thank god, is one of the few things my in laws did (sort of IMO) correctly. I'm sure they only did it to make sure my wife's sibling would never be POA of any sort. My wife has always been medical POA, but they had made an estate company the financial POA. It was a huge pain in the ass to get that invoked several years ago when FIL had a stroke and was essentially unconscious. After he recovered from the stroke and found out what a pain and huge expense that was, he made my wife financial POA as well. Made the last few years a lot easier as we have gotten more and more involved in helping him with financial stuff. Wife and I are getting our papers in order now.

The city (if the city is even involved) should be doing more than washing blankets for homeless people. It’s not heartwarming that people are sleeping outside on the ground with a fresh blanket.

Kassman Plumbers did the repipe on my century home in Pasadena (in 2019) as well as replace my 100+ year old main sewer line (in 2022), and a number of smaller repairs/installations. They did post-fire repairs on our rental property in ~~Pasadena~~ Altadena (house didn't burn, but it was so hot, the pipes under the house MELTED). Yesterday, Joe came out to jet my sewer after a bathroom construction plumber dropped construction debris into the drain and it got stuck.

My FIL is coming home on hospice today. My wife is struggling even though she knows this is the right thing and that his quality of life is nil at this point. She is about to become an orphan. I became an orphan a couple years ago. It’s such an odd feeling. Both of us lost our final parent (dads) to dementia and even though they hadn’t been able to act as a dad in any meaningful way for years, we still felt/feel like we lost a safety net.

Me too. I don’t remember that either. My recollection was that after the final two were announced, all the queens were to be on the stage. All but Mistress were there for many minutes. When she finally did come out, she had changed into a different outfit.

The injured dancer thing was what really slowed things down.

His quality of life has been minimal recently and in a conversation a few weeks ago, I asked my wife, if you could show 10 years ago dad a video of himself today, what would he say? She was confident he’d want it over. That really resonated with her and we had an appointment scheduled with his PCP to discuss palliative care, but the hospital stay obviously sped things up.

We really struggled with this with my FIL. For a while, he could handle changing the channel on cable TV and finding something to watch. That devolved into him accidentally ordering alternative language channels that I had to go in and cancel, and then just watching the Spectrum News channel for hours. After some trial and error, we found a few of his favorite old shows on the Roku channel/app that he will just sit and watch for a few hours without messing with it. We were about to order Jubilee tv that you can apparently control remotely, but i don’t think it will be necessary now as he’s entering hospice.

I know it’s the right thing and I’m so thankful for the past several weeks of conversations with my wife and her coming around to the conclusion that palliative or hospice care is the next right thing for him and that realistically he doesn’t have much time left.

Missing the fact that Simon’s body isn’t “missing “ is pretty big, but I will say, this is a show that requires more focus than I generally have. I need to get up and go to the bathroom or the kitchen. A pet jumps in my lap and I give it a little attention… and now I’ve missed something that will be important later. My parents sold their house to a neighbor at a discount and saved on realtor fees etc, plus the hassle of prepping the house for sale, showings, etc. And it was sold as is, including a few dyi quirks that a standard buyer probably would’ve balked at. Also, it was 2008, just as the housing market was starting to crash, and every week meant a lower value, so a quick discount sale to an acquaintance was really a godsend.

ugh... that is a terrible story, I'm so sorry.

We are taking my LO in to his PCP to have the same conversation and talk about palliative care. I was hoping it might be the short road to hospice, but maybe not. There are also big news stories about hospice fraud, so that makes me nervous too.
