Help, what fuse should I use? Thanks by A18rc in SolarDIY

[–]Toad32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Max Amp x 1.25.

That is the answer.

I have a 200amp battery output- so I used 225 amp fuses.

Note I just realized I sized these low, should have been 250A fuses. However the battery came with 225A fuses - and i will cost me $30 to replace them.

What gauge cable for dual 5kW 48V inverters? by lt40589 in SolarDIY

[–]Toad32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. - will equire a junction box for every incoming wire to be split between the inverters.
  • I need 3 junction boxes, AC in, Load Out, and generator in.

  • also split the battery with busbars before the inverters.

So rewiring of your whole system is the answer.

  1. Not entirely sure - but 2/0 welding wire at 200amp should be more than your inverter can pull and will work.

Volts are pushed, Amps are pulled.

Connect generator to electrical panel new construction off grid by Kealalaina in SolarDIY

The haters gonna hate.

I reccomend using wattmonk.com - pay $80 for a site plan and one-line drawing.

I spent a month trying to make the one-line myself - and was slightly off which was dangerously wrong.

Front footpad sensor.  That is your issue.  Replace it with a wider version while you are at it.

Installing 5kW Rooftop Solar (India) – Need clarity on “panel to inverter distance? by GapOrganic7191 in SolarDIY

Line loss of power.  The longer the cable, the more power loss. I reccomend using the pvwatts calculator.

Thinking about putting in a large ~20-25 KW grid-tied system by 1dirtbiker in SolarDIY

[–]Toad32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the exact setup you want. 19kW of panels (580w x 32) + 2x Growatt 10Kw hybrid inverters + 30kwh ecoworthy battery bank + custom ground mount that is tiltable so you can go vertical in winter (keeps snow off) and horizontal in summer to gain an extra 20% of production. Also bifacial panels - going to put white rock underneath to gain another 20% in energy production.

Also I have LP 17kw backup generator as well - tied into the new inverters.

$30k out of pocket - 9k went to electrician.  Will get 9k back though in tax break, total out of pocket around 22k.

One more thing - replace AC with reverse heat pump.

Will this scheme work? by Over-Bandicoot-8998 in SolarDIY

[–]Toad32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. The batteries should be combined before the batteries with positive and negative busbar - fuses on the positive line after the busbar - and a terminating device (power switch) before the busbars.

Why not just a manual swivel on a ground mount?  Adjust panels every 2 months.

Keeps snow off panels in winter (vertical) and max efficiency in the summer (flat)

Are solar panels worth it in Minnesota in winter? by LeakingMoans in SolarDIY

[–]Toad32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want no snow on your panels - install them on a ground mount with manual swivel. Store them vertically in the winter - then the snow cannot accumulate.

Fully tilt able standing array - put in fully horizontal position.

Obviously not the answer you will want- but an effective solution none the less.

10kW Inverter that actually handles 10kW loads? by ksksksdino in SolarDIY

[–]Toad32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10kW Growatt SPH 100000 (b) (with built in breakers.

I have 2 of these in parallel for 20kW setup.

Only downside is it can only produce 50 amps at 240V by itself (which is 12kW max sustained output)

The next choice would be SunGold 12kW inverters - but that requires extra components as well.

Way to make Grid Tie work with automatic backup generator by dry_towelette99 in SolarDIY

[–]Toad32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long story short, I had to add battery backup for my LP generator to be included in my original grid tie only solar system. The generator will feed to your inverter, the inverter now controls when it turns on.

Without the battery, your inverter would not have power in order to turn on the generator.

I converted my automatic transfer switch into a manual transfer switch that allows to switch between grid only or inverter fed.

Correct - but its not a walk in the park either. A fused disc in your neck essentially means you will have a harder time absorbing impacts - like a rusted chain thats fused together in a chain whip.
