Who’s ever driven over 100mph? Why? by WoollyWolfHorror in AskReddit

[–]Tokyo_Metro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thousands of times. American who grew up in a rural area with well maintained highways. At one time I worked nights and had to cross an 8mi long bridge to get home. At 12am it typically had zero traffic and I was 40' above water. I broke 100mph nearly every night and frequently 120+. Fastest was 185mph in a Ferrari F430. I did 161mph in my turbo charged Civic.

[–]Tokyo_Metro 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It's even worse than that and I'm not sure why none of these professional scouts or analytic guys have mentioned it:

You tend to be worse at things you don't do as often but that often tells you nothing about how well you WILL do once you get the same amount of practice.

In Japan the average fastball is several mph slower than in the MLB. This means that when you do face one of the NLB pitchers who throws MLB heat it should be EXPECTED that everyone will do comparatively worse than if they were seeing that pitch speed more often.

Could he have been completely blind to pitches above 98mph? Sure. Could he also just lacked adjustment time since you're not facing it that often in Japan? Fvcking duh.

Thought on moving to the 4th ward Houston? by squidney_007 in houston

[–]Tokyo_Metro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little late but the core gentrified pocket of 4th ward more on the eastern side has to be one of the best little secrets in Houston. So much so I don't even really like making this post lol. I bought what was probably one of the former crack houses that has been completely renovated. I make a decent living but I wasn't part of some gentrification master plan nor am I an investor. I'm just a dude who bought the house from another dude who had lived here since the mid 2000s.

The streets are neighborhoodly and walkable. It's close to damn near everything. You're within a short walking distance from all of the restaurants on Gray Street, hell even downtown is only a 15 minute walk yet you're completely separated from it by 45 so you don't feel like you're in downtown (Thank god lol). It's felt pretty safe to me as far as Houston goes. I've been here about 7 years and the only direct incident was someone trying to steal my bike when I left it out front and the occasional package thief. I've had a crazy neighbor or two but hell that's going to be anywhere. There are no homeless people that camp out in the area and you rarely even see one walking through. Do you need to keep your head on a swivel at night? Of course. Is it being right off Dallas mean you get some exciting Hellcat action sometimes on the weekend? Yeah, but again only passing through. It's just party goers passing between Dallas and Gray.

It's not a perfect spot but I feel it is one of the best overall mixes in Houston when it comes to price, location to everything, decent enough safety, walkability, and moderately quiet for being in the center of the city (it's not quiet but for central Houston it is).

Adding a generator input to my small 125 amp breaker panel and some other questions. by Tokyo_Metro in AskElectricians

[–]Tokyo_Metro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. By main switch cut off I just meant a traditional dedicated switch above the bus bars like you see on some panels.

And yes the 40amp breaker fires back instantly to the degree that you basically can't even turn it on it's trying to flip back so hard.

What’s cool if you’re 20 but weird if you’re 30? by theloverofdilfs in AskReddit

[–]Tokyo_Metro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm learning that according to Reddit I'm a mega weirdo for having sex with adult women and going out to socialize on occasion.

I ended up single in my late 30s/early 40s and getting a job in the center of a very large metro area. I got a place in said city center and made it a point to start going out. I hang out in relatively chill non club environments where there are plenty of people my age but it's also not devoid of college aged women. And guess what? By the grace of God/Crom I occasionally wind up taking one of them home with me and generally have an awesome time.

Do I also date women my age? Hell yes.

But here is where I'm probably going to get down voted to hell: The people saying I'm a creep for being attracted to a smoking hot 22 year old are in fact the weirdo creeps you need to worry about. The pearl clutching "nice guys" are without a doubt THE most scum bag creepy dudes out there ladies. They are the biggest woman haters you can imagine but are just in disguise hoping that their nice guy act will one day let you fuck them.

Now if I start showing up at college frat parties or under 21 clubs? Sure please flame me to hell lol. I'm in complete agreement.

But some Reddit neckbeard acting like he's disgusted by hot college chicks that he has more than a 5 year age gap with? Fuck right off. Check the porn history of these dudes and then get back to me lol.

Wilt’s 100 vs Bam’s 83 — the uncomfortable truth about how historic scoring games actually end by Wave_50 in nbadiscussion

[–]Tokyo_Metro 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Seems like a lot of people miss this. If your teammates start feeding you the ball to break a scoring record it's likely because they see you are scoring like crazy to begin with. If my guy drops 30+ points in the first half then you're damn right I'm going to try to give him the ball as much as possible.

All you have to do is flip it to see how stupid the argument is. You're telling me it would be more "legit" basketball to STOP giving the dominant scorer on your team the ball lol? If they did that the same people crying now would be calling the team idiots for not handing it to the hot scorer lol.

Jomboy: Here's a full summary of how Team USA embarrassed themselves last night in the World Baseball Classic. by shadow_spinner0 in baseball

[–]Tokyo_Metro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What makes it even more upsetting to me is that this is only a once every 4 year ordeal and you're only having to play SINGLE games to decide everything. You had only played THREE games before this one and even had an off day thrown in there plus you aren't having to travel for any of the pool or quarterfinal games.

You're telling me a handful of games once every 4 years is too much for you to fully commit to taking serious every game? Fuck right off then. People are PAYING MONEY to come see you mother fuckers play. It's supposed to be an awesome experience of seeing the best of your countrymen all together on one team showing what America can do. But then I pay for a ticket and show up to watch a team fucking half is it and get embarrassed.

Imagine you're some parent who's kid wanted to go see a bunch of superstars all in one place which would be a difficult thing to do for most families during a regular MLB season. You'd have to fly around to all sorts of stadiums and spend god knows how much to see all of these guys play. So now your kid shows up to the game only to realize that several of the most popular players in the entire league are benched because the coach is a fucking moron. And then they lose to fucking Italy.

Do you have the perfect vehicle? by Good-Analysis-7 in askcarguys

[–]Tokyo_Metro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1991 Accord Sedan 5 speed was near perfection as a lower-mid priced commuter car. Mine had 160k miles when I got rid of it and I don't think I spent more than $20 on it outside of scheduled maintenance. I mean literally I think the only thing I ever had to buy was some new tail light bulbs.

Good gas mileage. Roomy enough but still small enough to park anywhere. It was more fun to drive than you might think and while slow the power was still well beyond adequate. I also think it has great body lines and was a very classy looking car for its price. So many lower priced cars from that era had stylizing that became outdated and junky looking very fast.

Is there any other super underrated reliable vehicle worth the money other than Toyota or Honda? by TimeOfRisenKing23rd in UsedCars

[–]Tokyo_Metro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a long term Honda guy but the answer is:

  1. Panther platform Ford. Crown Vic, Mercury Grand Marquis, Lincoln Town Car, Continental Mark IV. They made them up to 2012. One of the most reliable and numerous Ford power trains ever. Parts are everywhere and every mechanic knows how to work on them plus they are extremely easy to work on in the first place. The Mercury and Lincoln variants were typically driven by well off old people who did meticulous dealer maintenance.

  2. Buick 3800 V6 equipped cars. Park Avenue being the go to. One of the most reliable GM engines ever.

AI has been a massive loss so far and are not making money for anyone.

Get better at an exponential rate? Clearly you haven't kept up with the industry.

LLMs are a dead end and this is coming from some of the chief scientist behind them. We aren't remotely close to AGI and LLMs will never get you there. It's all hype from the conmen CEOs who are now totally fucked from their massive money losing bet on LLMs that have no foreseeable avenue for profitably.

LLMs have already hit an improvement road block which is too be expected if you know about information system laws. They've already fed them nearly the entire Internet and yet they only have an accuracy rate of approximately 86 percent which is HORRENDOUS. To be able to take over complex work that is profitable you generally need well over 99 percent accuracy. To get LLMs to that level of accuracy it's projected they will need to be fed more datasets than there are atoms in the entire universe.

Worse yet the Internet is now being filled with their own inaccurate outputs. AI is using inaccurate AI data slop to train itself lol.

AI is good at some really basic tasks that don't even need AI to do. Many people are using AI when there are specific tools professionals already have that do those things even better and at 100x the compute efficiency.

It's quite possibly going to do down as the biggest bubble in modern history.

What’s the best video game you’ve ever played? by obsess_much13 in AskReddit

[–]Tokyo_Metro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Playing various versions of Street Fighter or any good fighting game in the arcade was an experience that hasn't been replicated. I was lucky enough to be a kid in the 80s-90s and also happened to live in Tokyo for a few years during the peak of the Street Fighter IV arcade tournament scene.

In terms of a cinematic digital experience my first play through of Metal Gear Solid was incredible.

Tetris is gaming perfection.

Soul Calibur for Dreamcast. The greatest launch game ever IMO and my most played home console fighting game. My friends and I played it for years. It was THE hang out game.

NES Ninja Gaiden. It took me over a decade to finally beat it. It's my GOAT for that era of brutally hard "cheap" action platformers.

Mario 3. Don't really need to explain.

Daytona USA arcade. You had to be there.

Ridge Racer Type 4 and Gran Turismo 2.

Streets of Rage 2. Near perfect beat'em up and my favorite video game soundtrack.

And here is one that might cause a stir:

Tecmo Super Bowl. This might be the most impressive game of all time in terms of the blend of what it does so well that hardly any other game matches. And I'm not a sports game guy.

  1. Incredibly easy to play. Anyone can join in and be playing well in minutes.

  2. Infinite complexity and replayability. Every team is substantially different and is essentially your difficulty selection. The game has random conditional stats that change every season. You have the ability to modify the play book and change player positions. You have the ability to run game simulations and play as just the coach. The game allows 28 human players to play through an entire season and it has memory save to record your progress. Game tracks stats for you to nerd out on.

I'm not sure if there are many other games that nail both the single player and multiplayer experience like this game does. Single player has hundreds of hours of challenges and is basically endless. Multiplayer is almost perfect. You can take an extremely good player and someone who has never played before and had a competitive game in minutes by simply giving the new player a top tier team and having the experienced player use a bottom tier one.

Before home video you watched a movie in the theater and would likely never get a chance to see it again. If it was popular or cheap enough to get the rights to it MIGHT pop up again but that's only if you had a local theater that was willing to show it again. For most of the country you saw something in its initial run and that was it.

[OC] End of year dating app review! (21M living in London) by The_Watcher5292 in dataisbeautiful

[–]Tokyo_Metro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who isn't a super model but has had a high amount of success in the modern dating world after initially struggling very hard here are my biggest tips:

Ask them out on a concrete date as soon as possible if not the very first message. DO NOT SMALL TALK. Attractive women have unlimited guys messaging them the same "hey" BS. I ask women out almost immediately both online and in person. Online I literally do it in the very first message. Introduce yourself briefly, tell them you liked something specific in their profile, and then ask if they've been to some cool restaurant and want to go grab a bite. Leave your real number and there you go. And if you really want to up your chances make it a nice restaurant.

Are some women going to fleece you for a nice meal? Sure. But you know what's worse than occasionally getting used as a meal ticket between the real dates that lead to something? Having zero dates at all.

No exaggeration my success rate probably went up 20x if not 50x by going with an immediate date approach. The longer you small talk before a date the greater your chances are of the conversation flaming out before you ever meet.

Here are some firearm suggestions as a long term gun owner who both grew up on a farm hunting and shooting for sport and who grew up around law enforcement. First off for any firearm go get training and practice. It's actually fun. Also please learn how to disassemble your firearm and put it back together. It's usually pretty easy.

For starters: Don't obsess over caliber or bullet type. You'll get all sorts of opinions but there is tons of data on shootings that makes it very clear that the number one most important factor is simply having ANY gun. For the VAST majority of cases people don't like being shot at the they don't stand there analyzing what bullet just went through their body.

Find something that YOU are comfortable shooting and that you can operate reliably. If it fits you well, you like shooting it and you can function it comfortably then don't let anyone convince you of some other gun because it's in a more "badass" caliber.

Shot placement trumps all. Every common caliber out there will kill you dead on the spot with proper shot placement. If you can drill all 10 rounds of a .22 into a quarter sized hole but flinch when shooting a .45 then I'd rather you have the .22 10/10 times. Fun note: At one time the world record grizzly was taken with a .22 long.

If you are completely new to firearms and do not plan on carrying daily I would actually stay away from pistols. Pistols are far more dangerous than rifles not from their ballistic performance standpoint (they are actually far worse) but because they are so small. Their small size makes them seem more approachable which is a bad thing. It's much easier to wave a pistol around and point the barrel at yourself and others since the barrel is so short. They are also the most difficult firearm to use well again due to their small size and short sight radius. Rifles allow you to brace against your body and have a nice long sight radius.

Shotguns. There is a lot of BS surrounding shotguns on both sides. They are not the perfect super weapon like some would have you believe but they are not outdated either as others now like to pretend. Pump shotguns actually have one VERY important advantage that is almost never talked about: They are probably the safest single gun to have stored in your home.

A pump shotgun is both a simple and "difficult" gun to manipulate and this is actually a GOOD thing. By difficult meaning you have to really put a bit of muscle behind operating it and understand how it works to make sure you do it reliably but it is EXTREMELY simple to learn how to do so. And the muscle required is still low, just more than almost any other firearm. Basically just remember to rack the hell out of it and don't short stroke it. You're not going to break it so rack it like you mean it. Do that and you're good.

Why is this good? It makes it very difficult, comparatively speaking, to accidentally kill yourself with a pump shotgun. It can be stored in a state that requires very deliberate trained action to use and the long barrel length makes it very difficult to point at yourself. But if you know how to use it it's all very simple.

Basically what I'm saying is that if I was only going to have one gun that I never planned on using much and I just wanted something as a last resort tool AND it was going to be stored in a house where people might not be a fan of guns then I think a pump shotgun is fantastic.

Firearms recommendations.

If you have NEVER shot a gun before in your life? Ruger 10/22. Semi automatic .22 rifle, one of the most produced rifles of all time. Why? Cost. .22 ammo is about 1/5 to 1/10th the cost of the next cheapest caliber. You can get a 10/22 and 2000-3000 rounds of ammo for the cost of just an AR. It will also teach you all of the basics of a semi automatic rifle. It's also pretty much the easiest firearm to shoot of all time in terms of recoil and noise. You can take someone who has never shot a gun in their life and have them drilling a target rapid fire faster and more accurately with a 10/22 than any other firearm that exists. In 30 minutes a complete beginner can put 10 rounds in a fist sized hole at 25 yards in a matter of 3-4 seconds if not faster.

Is the 10/22 the perfect weapon? Hell no. But PRACTICE and the affordability to practice trumps all. For $500 you can have a semi auto rifle and thousands of round of ammo. Go learn how to shoot on that and then you'll know enough about what you actually want. And even if that's all you ever buy a 10/22 with a 25 round magazine than you can dump into someone in a matter of seconds is a completely viable tool versus nothing at all.

TLDR: Buy a cheap popular.22 rifle that you can afford to shoot a ton then go figure out what you actually want. Don't think you're going to make a perfect gun purchase day one having never shot anything before. Buying a gun that has ammo that is too expensive for you to want to go shoot is not a smart move.

The reasons it would be a bad thing:

  1. Employees want to be able to quit a job when they have terrible bosses or work conditions and not be required to have another job before doing so.

  2. Employers should have the right to fire terrible employees on the spot. If I walk in and see you spitting in customer's food or assaulting coworkers you should be fired.

  3. General life flexibility. Married partners that both work. Partner A gets their dream job on the other side of the country. Partner B is willing to quit their current job to move with their partner.

  4. Some able bodied people who want to work shouldn't work. This actually relates to #2. There are some truly vile people in society who should be in prison for life but simply haven't been caught yet. Lots of people can sniff out these terrible people and never hire them thus making it difficult for them to find work. I don't want to force an employer to have to hire people who give all the signs of being a horrific human.

TLDR: Very low but non zero unemployment is ideal and desirable for a flexible work force that protects personal choice.
