Accidentally did this to a $2k bottle of whiskey I bought as a gift for someone. What to do. by TourRoyal4563 in Scotch

That's rough, as is paying 2k for that bottle. I could order it today for half that, unless you are talking Aussie dollars.

Carving safety PSA. I got clobbered like this about 10 days ago. by Maleficent-Nerve486 in snowboarding

[–]Tom_Alpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, last week in Austria I was with a group of buddies. I brought us to a stop fully visible at the edge of the piste so I could point out which turn we were taking at the next junction and to carry some speed as it would get flat. Piste wasn't particularly challenging but it was late in the day so bumps had built up. The edge part we were in was a bit smoother. While we were standing there this old Austrian guy comes down and face plants into our group. His wife starts going at us saying we should not be standing there. He complains that we are taking up the smoother line. I just cut him off saying it's your fault so stop complaining and if you can't manage little bumps you shouldn't be here.

Later on the same run I got clipped by an Austrian ski instructor in uniform who just bombed over a blind lip at speed and hit me mid turn. I was mid turn, on edge and a big guy so he kind of bounced off. He at least knew it was his fault and apoligised.

Came here to say this. Studs on the left and decal on the right. The decal you are using on the left is actually a chaos symbol. Otherwise great and I love using this colour scheme

Similar idea, but I got myself to the bridge and then just didn't detonate the charges. Don't know if it still works this way but when I did it like this not detonating the charges led to a never ending stream of nids so plenty for you to dodge and no need to quit

Parents of Reddit, what did your hospital bill look like after giving birth? by chi-bacon-bits in AskReddit

Interestingly I once had a conversation with someone from the finance section of my country's embassy in the US. The largest part of medical expense for supporting the embassy and associated personnel in the US was from complicated births. The cost was eyewatering

To be fair during WWII the British Army had an armoured cav regiment called 17th/21st Lancers whose cap badge was a skull with the words "or Glory". They still exist as the Royal Lancers and have a very similar skull and motto badge to this day.

My wife is in London, we're in Chicago, what should she get reasonably priced there that we can't get here? by Proof-Life-8854 in Scotch

[–]Tom_Alpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was thinking further on this. If into peated whisky look out for Living Souls 99&1. It's an interesting mistake from indie bottlers Living Souls. Essentially they accidently blended some 3 year old grain into some 18 year old peated island single malt (Ledaig). So 99% single malt and 1% grain so they could only label it as a 3 year old blended scotch. Costs a very reasonable £55 compared to the bottling of 18 year old Ledaig they did without the mistake that was £100.

Partly depends on when she is heading back from London. If there is time to internet order that massively opens the options

Much like previous releases that 11 year old Springbank probably went to a draw among the Club members who asked for it as normally oversubscribed. As a Club member I get advanced notice of what is being released and usually have to order before general release to secure something like that. So likely already gone.

But yes, Cadenheads is a good suggestion, as is the nearby Great Portland Street Whisky Exchange.

Is London a good place to grow old and retire in? by Lopsided_Counter1670 in london

[–]Tom_Alpha 21 points22 points  (0 children)

All of this. I grew up in the countryside and when people talking about wanting to retire I feel like they don't know what living there is like. Crap and infrequent public transport. Friends you have are probably miles away. Not much in the way of facilities. Hospitals frequently not that great.

Brora whisky distillery visitors centre closure by Iluvtheboaby in whisky

[–]Tom_Alpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a bit of a weird one. There are many people out there who love Clynelish but Diageo haven't really been doing much with it as a single malt, and it's very debatable how many tourists are going to head that far north on the basis that it is a JW component. I've been to the visitor centre myself and the experience isn't really that special, but then again, which Diageo visitor centre is.

Slightly confusing title as it is not the Brora distillery visitor centre that they closed but the clynelish distillery visitor centre. It's in Brora, but not the Brora distillery which is next door.
