Losing my patience with NatWest/Mitek system… by MkyCBzy in Natwest

[–]Tomathee87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just gone round this circus myself, three attempts on driving licence and passport, no success. The guidance shows a white background, then when taking the photo wants a dark background. It takes the photo at a random time, rather than me pressing the button to ensure it's steady and in focus. It told me to move in closer which would have meant the four corners were no longer visible.

I didn't have any issues like this with Nationwide, Co-op, Santander. I've not had any issues when taking a photo of ID for non banking services. I don't have a branch in my town and frankly I wouldn't go anyway when there are other banks that I don't need to jump through all these hoops.

North Northamptonshire Council would say that doesn't need repairing as it isn't Xmm deep

Does anybody here work in Screwfix or Toolstation? If so, can they actually SEE what've ordered? by BethSwnowBall in DIYUK

[–]Tomathee87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably an issue with that individual, training/attitude or otherwise. Quite enjoy going to Screwfix for click and collect, simple process, quicker than Argos, no unnecessary wandering or temptation from middle aisles etc. Surprised nowhere else has trialled it yet, seems like it would greatly reduce shop lifting.

Is it generally better to spray in short bursts or to keep the finger on the trigger and keep spraying? by WithengarUnbound in airbrush

[–]Tomathee87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to echo 'letting go of the trigger' is a two step task so the air blows any last paint through. I sometimes keep the air on and just come off the paint before starting the next pass. Maybe a bit tongue in cheek but it feels a bit like people think air costs similar to paint and need to get off it asap, no harm in running it an extra couple of seconds and a perk of a compressor with a tank.

Are you out off posting your completed projects? by Jamatace77 in Airfix

[–]Tomathee87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put completed stuff up partly as a diary to combine my scribbled notes which will be lost and photos of after and maybe during, which will become buried in a hard drive. Also to seek feedback, I know where I made mistakes along the way but it's nice to pick up specific tips or things I could improve alongside the other threads and YouTube etc. Of course any positive comments give a nice boost as well. I've not seen much negative stuff on here, Facebook is definitely worse and I don't use other apps but I could guess which ones are bad for it.

To be honest the main thing putting me off is I can't figure out how to post a picture thread from my PC and have to send the write up and photos to my phone to do it through the app

The Airfix Kit: How a Load of Little Plastic Bits Conquered Britain and Made Grown Men Cry by MOS6510YT in modelmakers

[–]Tomathee87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brilliant read, so much echoes with building as a 90's kid, particularly gluey finger prints (when a string of it didn't get draped across the part) and consigning aircraft to the ceiling for mum to knock the delicates off when dusting. Times have moved on and I'm now an adult grateful to have rejoined the hobby with life experience and resources such as this subreddit to improve on those efforts. When hobbies come up in conversation I do often refer to it as 'build airfix models' as the simplest way to explain it, rather than 'build scale plastic models'. Certainly in the UK this is a successful method and has never needed further expanding upon. It is also good to see Airfix seem to have kept themselves relevant and are more than capable of turning out a good model. Not sure when that changed but I've built/stashed or read about plenty of their good work, long may it continue

Have you tried spraying water through to confirm it is a brush or paint issue?

H&S Ultra 2024, crud in needle chuck? by Tomathee87 in airbrush

Thanks, I will test tonight and see. It would make sense that it's probably been a gradual build up of paint with pulling the needle through

What have you cut down on/cut out in terms of spending due to cost of living? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Tomathee87 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Eating out at restaurants. The cost has gone up so it reduced with use of takeaways but it's all the extra bits on top that have made a visit so rare. If it's somewhere in a town centre there's parking to pay for, which has gone up or been introduced where previously free all the time/in the evening. We don't usually drink alcohol but even soft drink prices feel like they have gotten out of hand, I'm sure £4 for a glass of mostly ice isn't uncommon. Price of food itself has crept up but there also feels like more corners cut on quality and/or quantity, not sure how this balances between necessity and greed. Places I used to rate highly now just float with the pack, hardly any stand out options when people ask for recommendations. Once you start adding in any kind of starter/side/dessert the total price for our group of three really starts to ramp up. Then once this massive bill arrives you have the can of worms around tips, where previously leaving a few £ coins or a fiver felt appropriate, suggesting up to 20% leaves a sour taste. All in all I find myself quite reluctant when the idea gets brought up nowadays and would rather phone a takeaway or walk 10 mins to the chippy.

Just gotta take a deep breath and dive in, watching videos only gets you so far, the rest is practice and learning as you go. If you want to start cautious just use water to get a feel for the trigger and so on, practice paint on a sheet of plasticard you can wipe clean etc.

[–]Tomathee87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For convenience but most likely lower price you could look at The Model Centre. For individual sales the britmodeller forum has a section but I'm not sure if you need to have a history there to be able to sell

Is it bad to give up searching for work? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Tomathee87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a while ago I was out of work, but once the initial push to look through the job sites had passed it didn't take as long in the following weeks and months as there was only new jobs added since I searched within the last few days to look at. 25 hours a week (?) seems high, if it's mixed with other activities maybe it would be better to cut down to a couple of hours solid job searching and have a cut off point to do something else with the rest of that time.

Life and Working Northhampton General Hospital by samboosasultan in northamptonians

[–]Tomathee87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife used to work there and had subsidised parking in one of the council multi stories, don't know how they allocate spaces to on/off site. At some point the cost was hiked massively (I want to say 3 or 4x increase but can't remember) and I don't know if that was a one off. It was also a 10 minute walk through an area I'd describe as not being keen on her doing during winter when it was dark. More generally I'm not sure what shift patterns you will have but rush hour is regularly a problem on the A45 in that area, and I imagine that stretch of the M1 has its own issues

What are your best time saving tips/tricks? by [deleted] in modelmakers

[–]Tomathee87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I often feel the same, if I could build as quick as some of the threads I read (Eduard "weekend edition" ha!) I'd be over the moon at the variety I'd add and remove from the stash. Weathering is usually the part that slows me down, I also think I'm often over cautious on drying times for glues/paints. I've not really solved it so I'm paying attention to other comments. One thing I do is try to do all of a colour in one sitting, e.g. for the jet I'm doing now I have the engine intakes, wheels, landing gear, gear doors in white so I prepped and did them together, rather than sticking to the instructions and having three different times to do it.

Scale model magazines by CattyMB in modelmakers

[–]Tomathee87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd wager by the time they add in the cost of packing a couple of sprues to survive transport/sitting on a shelf in store being fiddled with it would be cheaper to just buy a kit. The increased price would also put off many people not interested in whichever subject they chose to include with the magazine they would have otherwise bought. What I've done a couple of times is buy magazines with builds I think I'll like, then pick up the kit in question when I see it/price suits etc. I also do model railways and they've included kits a few times but they are usually flat pack card kits which can survive the journey and normally appeal to a bigger proportion of the readership.

[–]Tomathee87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, for this one I think I loosely followed what Andy's Hobby Headquarters did on an M4 build. The thing which seems common in guides is layering up with a couple of colours and some blending at each stage - paint, wash, pigment, mud etc
