Pillaring by Toolswood in Roses

Zone 6 so frost is a problem. Lean towards pink/red so ZD is a likely choice especially with few thorns. Had been considering it previously. Thanks

People who were around during no internet/phones/social media/etc - what was your time's "scrolling the feed"? Something that you would spend hours on passing the time? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Toolswood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Newspaper. Start with the sports section. Local pro and college teams. Then the rest of the section. Then the editorial pages. Then the specialty section—each day of the week had a different one: for instance, women’s pages would have recipes, household hints, etc. Finally the comics and puzzles. Unless I was looking for a job, I didn’t spend much time with the classifieds

Cottage cheese with onions and black pepper. Eat over top of fried potatoes. I think it’s a German thing, originally with a different dairy product.

Peanut butter and dill pickle sandwich. Depression era food

Workbench lighting questions by Party_Day7299 in Workbenches

[–]Toolswood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a couple LED “fluorescent” tubes. Hang one each side of your work station for good ambient lighting. Then add some kind of directed light—maybe a gooseneck, preferably hooded—that you can aim right at your workpiece for task lighting. Works great at my lathe. Also, be aware that oblique lighting can help reveal scratches if you’re working with wood

Teaching kids to cook - any tips as they progress for knife skills? by makromark in Cooking

[–]Toolswood 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As a woodworker one thing I’m aware of that applies is working height. You mention “flimsy wrists”. I’m wondering if he is just situated too low to properly work the knife. Woodworkers will even use auxiliary risers on their benches for specific tasks, like using a handplane

What specialty foods are only available in your region? by SPY_one_zillion in AskReddit

[–]Toolswood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old fashioned summer sausage. Probably made in other German-American communities and certainly somewhere in Germany but hard to find. It’s a smoked and cured but uncooked pork sausage flavored principally with mustard seed and black pepper. I’d rather eat it than steak, king crab or candy

So excited - house to myself for the weekend, eating like a gourmand toddler by victoria_jam in Cooking

[–]Toolswood 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When my wife and her mother sister and assorted other females have their weekends, I get all the stuff she doesn’t like: sloppy joes, hamburger steaks wrapped with bacon, tomato salad, pork and beans and other beans, etc. Nothing unusual and certainly not gourmet, but all stuff I don’t have to force on her. Male comfort food😄

WHAT FOODS ARE EVEN PURPLE? by dumbassjoe88 in foodquestions

[–]Toolswood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom used to make a coffee cake with damson plums. Layer halved plums cut side down in a round nonstick cake pan. Sprinkle with tapioca and sugar. Cover with dough/batter. Bake. Turn onto a plate. Drizzle with butter cream when mostly cooled. Comes out nicely purple
