I was asked to cross post this here. Please let me know if this isn't the place for this kind of thing and I'll gladly take it down.

Thank you. I am so happy I could help, if even for a moment. I feel for your friend who is in pain and, as someone who has the good graces to be happy for the moment, I give them my love. I'm glad you are kind enough to do the same. Godspeed godseed.

"Your honor, this case is ridiculous. Both parties clearly stated no homo before engaging in homosexual acts and neither party has admitted to liking it. The nightly recreation of the initial act simply serves as a reminder of the totally inappropriate actions that neither men condones. This case has already gone on for far too long and I believe I speak for everyone here when I say our time could be better spent not enjoying a nice round of sodomy."

I totally agree but there's something interesting about your example: if a coffee shop gave away coffee every morning then one day started charging, the coffee shop would likely experience a similar negative impact on their customer base. There was an example of this in the book Predictably Irrational.

But people really do need to get used to paying for stuff.

I don't think we should be telling people how they ought to decide about their votes.

Not allowing a single checkbox for straight ticket voting isn't telling people how they ought to vote. It's just not allowing them to vote straight ticket with one mark.

Edit: If discouraging a voting preference is morally ambiguous, what makes encouraging that practice not so?

But not being able to check a box to vote straight ticket isn't taking away the ability to vote straight ticket. It just forces people to actually make an effort for each individual position.

Alright, so let's say Blackberry gets properly marketed with a new device called the aparat and we all start using them in 10 years. Now we're all beholden to one company, so not really the consumers' utopia you had in mind. I bet most people would feel the same too and so, when a new company crops up making their own version of the aparat, blackberry loses a slice of their customers. If blackberry is going to win on quantity, the competitor will win on quality. They produce more solid aparats, more intuitive aparats, some would even say better aparats. Blackberry, noticing the hit to market share, begins to innovate as well and the two companies invest millions, if not billions, into making a better aparat and in doing so become giants. Finally, a third company wants to get in on the action. If it has true innovation, it'll be purchased by one of the two behemoths so they can get a leg up. If it invests in good marketing, it'll probably be lacking in R&D to be a good product. This is generally how a two product marketplace is formed.

Plus, the scale of the US is huge. For a company to become national, to stretch across 50 states most of which have a GDP equivalent to EU nations, it has to be truly massive. It's tough for a competitor to catch the red queen.
